Apparently, that's already out: http://www.wbshop.com/Urgh-A-Music-War/1000112990,default,pd.html.

I got a shiatty bootleg copy of it about 3 or 4 years ago, I might have to get this one, now.

Hobodeluxe: Dude I saw this on PBS the other night. Great show. James Brown kills his set.

I was just going to say that.

But still my favorite rockumentary will always be Cramps Live At the Napa Valley State Mental Hospital.

I've never been able to watch this all the way through but it's my understanding that James Brown makes it worth while.

There's James Brown and then there's everyone else. I'm sure every artist named in this thread would agree that they can't compete.

It really is difficult to even listen to The Beach Boys knowing what a piece of dirt Love is, and how much he screwed Brian Wilson over.

Same one I've had for years
James Brown on the T. A. M. I. show
Same tape I've had for years

This is really great -- the DVDs that were around had brutal transfers; earlier VHF tapes were a bastardized combination with another concert film from the same era. There's a lot of great stuff, and the songs are all under 3 minutes, so is it really going to kill you getting to the next one?

James Brown is freakin' awesome. The Rolling Stones are right after him, I think -- tough break there, kids. Mid-60's vintage Marvin Gave, Smokey Robinson. The Barbarians, whose drummer Moulty was Rick Allen before Rick Allen was Rick Allen (and he sang too). Scary soft-focus close-ups of Leslie Gore doing "You Don't Own Me." Great time capsule viewing.

Does this pass for wit where you live?

Actually, each time I just couldn't get into it and decided to turn it off instead of wasting time - as I'm doing here - skipping around, trying to find something good.

I'm okay with people slamming the Beach Boys when they keep it specific to Mike Love, like ertznay here. But beyond that, not so much. The stuff here is a real two-edged sword; it's great seeing the band before Brian stopped touring, but almost all of these songs feature Mike. As much as I raved about this film earlier, the Beach Boys material is some of the weakest stuff here. I'd much rather listen to outtakes of Brian working on Pet Sounds a year after this was filmed.

Ok so they weren't the toughest rockers on the block, and a lot of their songs sound the same, but come on man, Pet Sounds. That is a top notch album on par with anything else in the 60's.

This.

Pet Sounds pretty much singlehandedly created music production as we knew it. Until the Loudness Wars turned it to crap, that is.

Without that record, there wouldn't be any Sgt. Pepper's or Dark Side Of The Moon, or who knows how many other albums.

AgentOrangeDrink: There's James Brown and then there's everyone else. I'm sure every artist named in this thread would agree that they can't compete.

The Rolling Stones followed James Brown and they looked and sounded like crap. Their guitar sound was tinny, Jagger couldn't sing or dance, and even Charlie was over-matched by Brown's great drummer.

Sorry, The Big TNT show is better. Wake me when that comes out on DVD. The Bo Diddley part is phenomenal in that show.

2010-03-12 10:54:55 AM
James Brown is the best but there are TONS of great performances. Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, the supremes, smoky robinson and the miracles, the ronnettes, the rolling stones. it really is probably the best single rock show on tape.

The T.A.M.I. Show was fimed in Electronovision, a shiatty-looking semi-HD TV-to-film process also used for a movie about Jean Harlow that came out around that time. I think there was a Hamlet with Richard Burton, too. Then Electronovision was gone, thank goodness.

Still, The T.A.M.I. Show is a great 60s artifact and at the time of its release I can truly say it changed my life as I saw what posers the Stones were and how authentic and super-boss James Brown was. I did feel good.

The Beach Boys material was cut many years ago - good to see it back. I always found it amusing to see the Boys at the end of the film waving good-bye and thinking about some young kid who never saw the film in a theater wondering why the Beach Boys were on the stage if they weren't in the movie.

I still have the Jan & Dean partial-soundtrack album of this show. They're coming from all over the world!

2010-03-12 11:54:19 AM
Another part to add about the Big TNT Show is watch for the row of black girls. I remember seeing the show for the first time about ten years ago and they would regularly catch these 5 or 6 black girls in the rafters dancing in their seats. They were pretty much the only black audience members shown the entire show while many of the performers on the show were black. Real WTF once I noticed it. Then I remembered it was 1966.

2010-03-12 02:13:39 PM
Entity79: Without Brian Wilson hearing Rubber Soul and deciding that he had to top that because it wasn't the usual 3 singles + filler formula, there wouldn't have been a Pet Sounds. that record there wouldn't be any Sgt. Pepper's or Dark Side Of The Moon, or who knows how many other albums

FTFY.

As to Subby's claim, Eddie would like a word with him/her:

DrBenway:

A story I heard long ago was that James Brown felt he should close the show. The Rolling Stones felt James Brown should close the show. The promoter disagreed and the Stones went on last. So James Brown said fine, fark you, I'll blow them off the stage. The Stones knew they were doomed.

I wish Mike Love was a deleted Beach Boy.
