Tattoos just look trashy. Even the fun innocent butterfly ones. And honestly I think that's part of the reason a lot of people get them. There's often a fine line between what's trashy and what's considered "cool". People want to let others know that there is an element of danger or mystique about them. Tattoos make this easy. The person don't doesn't really have to demonstrate their crazy side or mystiqueness to prove themselves, the tattoos communicate that for them. It's basically the lazy short cut to being cool.

AnubisMan: Tantrum: Nah. It's true that there's a lot of ugly work done out there. I only go to artists that I trust to do good work, and I'm not ashamed of anything I have on me.

Aside from that, some of my best friends work at tattoo parlors and could blow away any stereotype people have about people with tattoos.

It sounds like you might be a little more open-minded than most, but remember what I was saying about how people with tattoos are less judgemental than those without? I think every Fark thread about tattoos pretty much supports my theory.

Yeah, but for everyone of those out there there are 50 tattooed morans that are reenforcing the negative image.

A moran is a moran, tattoos or not. Trust me, there are plenty more out there without ink than with. I've seen more yuppies and frat boys ruining my image of mankind than morans with tats. Of course, that could be a regional thing; tattoos are far more acceptable here in Seattle than elsewhere.

skinink: Tattoos are cheap self indulgences to help people believe they are important or have had significant experiences. Mostly, they are expressions of a lack of confidence in one's own experiences if the personal history is so cheap that it is expressed in a drawing on the skin.

Hmmmm.... the two on my left arm cover scarring that I found very upsetting. I got the second one done a few weeks before my wedding because I would rather have art that I find pretty to look at than scars that I certainly didn't ask for, or want, on display in my wedding dress.

The others are a small symbol I got the night before I had cancer surgery that I didn't want -- I wanted the tattoo for years and decided to get it. I have another that I got when I was through with that run of cancer. Another is just because I liked it and it evened out my back. On one ankle, I have a small drawing my best friend, who lives in Texas, did for me. And on my other ankle, I have my husband's initials as typewriters keys.

They're all well done, they were all carefully chosen. I don't think any of them make me "special" or "different," but they do make me happy. I just like them. If you don't, that's cool. But why such vitriol?

My husband and I went to a tattoo parlor to celebrate our anniversary.

He got the Delta Force symbol on his arm (he served with the Rangers), so his is meaningful, and frankly looks sharp as hell.

Since I wanted to join in all the fun, I got a piercing.

Think I should've gotten a tat instead?

This is nothing new. It's simply the new manifestation of pathetic humanity.

Well, there are good tattoo and bad.
The bad part is when people say it's a profound form of self-expression, and then pick some stock artwork, or worse yet, Chinese/Japanese characters when they're not Asian and can't even read them. Basically something which doesn't have anything to do with you.

This one's a classic. What does it say about you? You sought to define and express yourself and all you could think of was your own name??

I find it curious that young people get tattoos to be break away, be rebellious and "free", yet find that as the years go on they're trapped in appearance by these decisions made long ago. Eventually that band becomes lame and you wonder why you ever liked them, "tribal" tattoos become recognized as douchebaggery, and basically you'll change as a person, but be confined by these decisions your younger self made.

In essence, that sort of rebellion ultimately traps you, which was kind of the opposite of the point.

You know, I think that's a good thing about mine. I got my first one a couple of weeks before my 30th birthday. I feel like I know who I am, and I know what I like. If I got things when I was 18 or even 25, I might regret them, but I'm 35. I may as well live some. I started very late in life, doing anything I love. I started a band when I was 33; I never tasted alcohol until I was 30, the same year I got my first tattoo. The only thing I did when I was younger was get my nose pierced when I was 19 -- and I still have that. Maybe I'm just stunted (probably) but I doubt I will ever regret any of this.

And if I do? I'll just say "fark it," regret is for losers.

Agreed; I have my nose ring, I used to have a labret piercing (closed during an afternoon at a job), I used to have nipple piercings(took them out because my ex gave them to me and my husband didn't like them) , and I have seven tattoos. No reason why you can't have both.

What did you get pierced?

kelisu: It's unusual, I know - didn't wanna be trite. Plus I needed to stay employable.

Oh wow... that is really pretty. I like it.

I'm working on a half sleeve on my left arm; everything else is on my back and ankles.

I have a job in the entertainment industry, so nobody cares. I usually work jobs like this, where it doesn't matter in the slightest. That said, all I need is a shirt that goes to my elbow and nobody will ever see what I have tattooed. I'm not stupid; who knows what the future will hold?

I've had my nose ring since I was 18, so after 17 years, it's not going anywhere, much like the three holes in each of my ears. I can take it out without worry.

It's not that hard to make your body how you want without ruining your life.

Dude... I seriously like that piercing. I'd never get it (I have big, but slightly uneven, boobs) but it's really hot.

People without tats place way too much meaning in them. Experiences? Sure some people get them for that, others get them because they like them and want to decorate their body. And it's really not hard to put on a button up long sleeve shirt.

As far as picking on Levi's tat... what's so "unmeaningful" about one's family? I mean hey that sure won't ever change. I have two friends who have their family crest on them.

Ah, "Heroes". Such a great show with so much potential until it turned into the sci-fi-soap-opera-of-the-week with five new premises and twists added each episode with never any resolution at all.

I had hopes for Battlestar Galactica too until it went down the same path that Heroes chose to go later. Totally disappointed.

A great story/movie that features tattoos as a part of the plot:

www.christophernolan.net

There have been others, The Illustrated Man being one, but I like the whole memory aspect of Memento and the tattoos as a way to track facts, or lies. A story from Omni Magazine (new window) in 1989 stands out too, about a man who wakes up each day with expanding tattoos and no memory of how he got them. He later finds that based on the patters of the tattoos he's able to become invisible, or more accurately blend into any textured background. I wish I had that story today. I read it in 1989 and never forgot it. If nothing else Omni featured some great short stories.
