Not conclusive proof, but pretty damning.

/Anyone else old enough to remember the Dateline exploding gas tank fiasco from '94?

2010-03-11 03:05:34 PM
Pure speculation.

ricewater_stool: Pure speculation.

Anyone who believes there is something wrong with Toyotas doesn't apparently care whether or not an accusation is pure speculation.

2010-03-11 03:30:02 PM
Which is more believable: that a Toyota experienced a technical problem (similar events to which have been found to be caused by driver error) or that a man in serious debt raised a false alarm to get out of his car payments?

2010-03-11 03:54:39 PM
Tomorrow he'll blame it on a black or hispanic guy.

2010-03-11 04:11:34 PM
Circumstantial evidence is a kind of evidence, right?

You got a citation of that part? Because last I checked, Toyota was blaming floor mats, or bad brakes, or something.

Old enough to remember Audi and 60 Minutes claim of unintended acceleration.

How dare anyone doubt "Anonymous tipster." That guy's written hundreds and hundreds of books.

Yep, I can't draw a conclusion one way or another from that.

2010-03-11 07:27:29 PM
Did he want a role in a reality show?

Really, I was thinking about this on the drive to work today - in my Toyota Highlander that has never experienced any problem. If you drove a Prius and it suddenly accelerated, wouldn't you just put it in neutral and TURN OFF THE FARKING KEY?

Maybe a Prius owning Farker can explain why that isn't possible.

2010-03-11 07:28:01 PM
can we get a "NO SHIAT" tag? This one was called from the beginning.

I thought this from the 911 call. The operator told him repeatedly to put in neutral, then when the police came they shouted at him through the bull horn to put it in neutral and he shook his head. When he finally stopped he said he was afraid of putting it in neutral because the car would "flip".

Some of the other calls they briefly said to put it in neutral or turn it off, but this guy ignored it for like 10 or 20 minutes.

2010-03-11 07:29:17 PM
Told ya.

2010-03-11 07:29:48 PM
Hey, my Toyota F150's pedal stuck! I should sue!

2010-03-11 07:29:54 PM
This was the guy calling in because he was speeding down the highway, right?

Hey, farker, put the damn car in neutral.

2010-03-11 07:29:57 PM
Not unpossible...

Would imagine it to be like those who know they are going to get their car repo'd and get into a wreck to have the debt paid off. Not that I condone or would ever think of such a thing...

/was my first thought when I heard this guy on the news

2010-03-11 07:31:18 PM
$700,000 is a lot of personal debt.

2010-03-11 07:31:41 PM
Best case scenario is that people keep dragging Toyota's name through the mud, all of the stories are bullshiat, and then I get to buy an Avalon with 0% APR for three years

2010-03-11 07:32:45 PM
No real surprise here. I'll bet there are plenty of bogus claims on the way.

2010-03-11 07:33:00 PM
Heartless corporation versus real estate tool. It doesn't work for me as a "root for the little guy" story. I call for thunderdome, followed by "bust a deal, face the wheel."

Interesting. But isn't admitting you own a car that can only do "about 90", punishment enough?

In the original post, someone mentioned that they heard you cant put the Prius in neutral. I drove the Prius at work the other day and sure enough, you can place it in neutral while going 95+ mph. The manual even says that if you push and hold the power button for 3 seconds it will turn off. The steering sucks while it is off though, more so than my 91 Land Cruiser.

/wasnt on a 2010 Prius though, 2009

SlothB77: $700,000 is a lot of personal debt.

If all that shiat about his debt and such is true, I say we burn him at the stake for 1st degree criminal lack of foresight when he should know goddamned better.

This. I thought Toyota's whole message was that, if this happens to you, put the car in neutral and then try to engage the emergency brake to slow it down and turn the car off. How exactly would putting the car in neutral "flip" the car? Fake car problem is fake.

I was wondering when someone would pull some crap like this...

I had the throttle stick wide open on my 1977 Plymouth Fury once.

It was a company car, and almost new at the time.

I shut off the ignition, coasted to a stop, bent the bell crank with a pliers where it was rubbing and sprayed down the whole linkage with WD-40 just to make sure.

TOTAL TIME: 2 minutes, tops.

They used mechanical linkages back in those days, major malfunctions were rare.

My motorcycle has a kill switch right next to the throttle: cuts power to the engine, bike stops instantly. It also has a fuel cutoff valve, handy if there is a fuel leak or a fire. Or to stop a fuel leak from becoming a fire.

Both of these features would add $50 tops to the cost of the car, and would pay themselves back many times over in insurance savings alone. Yet I do not see them on any car on the road.

Why don't you Farkers take this to a car dealer and ask him why comparable safety features are not available on vehicles costing many times the money?

2010-03-11 07:36:24 PM
That still doesn't explain how he got that POS going over 90...

2010-03-11 07:37:38 PM
Well no farkin' shiat.

This is going to go on for years.

Every accident which involves a Toyota shall become:

":Oh My Farking Gawd, My Toyoter tried to kill me!"

Shameless self promotion. (new window)

SnakeLee: Best case scenario is that people keep dragging Toyota's name through the mud, all of the stories are bullshiat, and then I get to buy an Avalon with 0% APR for three years

I went out and bought a nice little 2008 Camry XLE after this whole thing hit critical mass. I love a companies misfortune because I get to cash in

SlothB77: $700,000 is a lot of metric shiatload of personal debt.

First thing I thought of when I heard this 911 call: This guy is full of shiat. That is not the voice of a man in a runaway vehicle.

2010-03-11 07:39:53 PM
How the fark do you get $700k in debt?

2010-03-11 07:40:34 PM
So an anonymous tipster told these idiots he wasn't making payments on his car and this is good enough for them to print? I hope, if it's bullshiat, he sues the farking Web site.

Why does Obama hate Toyotas?

MaudlinMutantMollusk: That still doesn't explain how he got that POS going over 90...

Seriously, why wouldn't he?
It's got a combined output of 110 hp, that's freaking plenty for 115.
I refuse to believe that anybody would just go online to troll, right?

2010-03-11 07:43:10 PM
Ummm, two questions:
1) Why didn't you just toss it into neutral?
2) Why didn't you throw it into park?
3) why didn't you just turn off the ignition key?

I know that's three questions. I'm pretending I'm an old fart driving a car.

Because the nips don't care about black people. Otherwise, they'd make their cars easy to use and cheap, like tvs.

Wall Street Journal from last week: Toyota Motor Corp. is planning an assault next week on its critics as the company digs in for a mammoth legal battle.

I wouldn't be so tough on this guy when just the same day as this incident a Toyota employee released a pile of documents alleging a coverup.

2010-03-11 07:45:02 PM
Someone used the word "Prii". farking seriously. Not everything that ends in a "-us" is pluralized with changing it to a "-ii".

2010-03-11 07:45:22 PM
baby_hewey: Why does Obama hate Toyotas?

Because as CEO of GM they are his competition.
