Exposing water to freezing temperatures will freeze water, amazing. How about they deal with the question "will my kids catch a cold if they're hair is cold".

Um...

That's not ice, dude.

Although I don't dispute the outcome of this "theory", I must say that scientifically, their presentation was worth shiat. Dude walks out into -12 degree air with wet hair. Into darkness! We can't see what's going on.. and then they cut scene! For all we know he could've cheated and stuck his head in snowbank for effect so he could get his ass back into his nice warm bath that much quicker.

How about giving us a well-lit, time-lapse video "Weather Guys?"

Wow. So every time my hair froze walking to the school bus stop on a winter morning was actually ground breaking research?

A co-worker of mine was once a trucker running the line between Seattle and somewhere in Alaska. As he put it "some hippy" got out of his VW bus, ran inside and took off his hat and coat then commented he'd forgotten his smokes. So the guy runs out, no hat, not coat, to get the smokes. He gets back in to the restaurant with his long hair frozen stiff.

The natural thing to do is to put your hands into your hair and shake, to get the ice out and to warm your scalp. When the guy did this all (or most I suspect) of his hair broke off and he then proceeded to start crying.

Heard this story years ago. Highly unlikely it was made up, the details were too good and the co-worker wasn't the sort that makes shiat up.

That video was about 3 minutes too long.

If you pee, will the urine freeze inside your urethra? Or does it have to hang out for a while?

That's my question.

2010-03-11 03:32:17 PM
Anyone who would do this is a crackhead.

I've peed outside in -35F weather with no problem.

I've done that before, so I'm really getting kick out of these responses. Picture it....West Yellowstone, February 1993:

I made a mad dash from the indoor hot tub up to my motel room on the second floor.

/Hair didn't freeze, though.
//Not really a cool story, bro.

Having gone to high school in Montana with long hair and gym at the end of the day, I can tell you that yes wet hair freezes and no it does not break off. The hair's not freezing, the water in the hair is. I've only tested this down to about -20 though.

As soon as the first of the stream hits the ground it begins freezing up the piss-arc.

-12? I did it in -30 in Fairbanks, AK at Chena Hot Springs

MooseBayou: If you pee, will the urine freeze inside your urethra?

If it did, you'd have worse problems than frozen pee, you'd have a bad case of frostbite in a very uncomfortable place (and not the back of a volkswagon either.)

Another burning question answered. How can we thank you enough, subby?

The inside of your urethra will be fairly close to your core body temperature. So no. If your urine manages to freeze inside your urethra your body temperature is so low you're dead already.

Duh. Water freezes. However, that will not make your kids catch a cold. It boggles my mind that people still believe this. My mother is one of them and she's a nurse. *facepalm*

There was nothing to see in that overly long video even if it wasn't crammed into a tiny sidebar. They could have at least picked someone with hair that was more than 1 mm long.

It's no riskier than having sex with a frigid girl.

Newscaster banter is full of suck.

Happens to me all the time. Take a shower, go out for a smoke with wet hair, a few minutes later my ponytail is frozen.

Big whoop.

More amusing was the time my pants froze hard enough that they stood by themselves.

A few weeks ago while snowboarding, my hair which is about 13 inches long, got wet after having to dig myself out while boarding down the backside of the mountain...needless to say, by the time I reached the lift again, my hair hanging below my beanie was frozen solid in a waving form from the wind while boarding down.

Stayed frozen the rest of the day too, really wish I brought my camera.

i think the relevance of the week forecast in the 60s is great to the story.

It's just extreme temperatures compromising your immune system. I once came down with the flu after spening too much time in a sauna.

After work, I'm going to stop in at the butcher shop and take a leak in the walk in freezer.

I'll let you know how it works out.

2010-03-11 03:40:27 PM
Why yes, if you get cold you can catch a cold! thats how it happens. Not all the Bacteria and Virions floating around and on evrything some snotty ass kid touched.

\\Microbiologist. In college did random cotton swabs of items around the grocery store. Dude, you wouldnt believe the crap we grew from fruits and veggies. People touching the leaky meat wrappers then going to grab produce.

Wash your fruits people! Wash them good!

That picture is appropriate because of the temporal grief.
You see, if you split the screen with the hair/ice reporters on one side and a bottle of ketchup(or as you call it "weak sauce") turned horizontally with the cap removed, you have a very effective Heinz commercial to watch while you're huffing paint.

You sound gay, Real Mentm don't wash fruits or vegetables. Raw meat particles is just more protein. Homosexuals like yourself of course don't need the extra since they already get plenty intaking all that baby batter.

You lose 362% of your body heat through your head!

As a former owner of a VW bus, those things dont put out heart for shiat. Most of the time its just as cold inside the bus as it is outside.

But i like the image of a fat trucker all going 'Huurrr, stoopid hippy'

Nothing gets you to experience rapid blood vessel constriction like making snow angles while hottubbing.

/feels like a thousand needles when you jump back in.

wow, that question has a pretty obvious answer now doesn't it?

I make damn sure that I'm perfectly dry when I leave the house in -30 or below degree weather, walking around with ice on your head is somewhat uncomfortable.

uh duh. I used to dry my hair faster by letting it freeze outside and combing the ice out.

Sometime in the mid-'80s, I was wearing blue jeans while skiing in approx. -20f temps. At one point I tried to smack the ice off my pantleg with my ski pole. The denim/ice cracked, and left what looked like a razor slash when my pants thawed out. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the same type of thing can happen with hair long enough not to be heated up by the scalp.

Last night I sliced some jalapenos for tomorrow's lunch, sat down to watch TV in my boxers, absently scratched my balls and spent the next 45 minutes teabagging a glass of milk on the kitchen floor.

The natural thing to do is to twist and shake, to get the ice out and to warm your pelt. When the guy did this all (or most I suspect) of his fur broke off and he then proceeded to start howling.

Dude, I highly doubt it happened like this.
