ZING!

Bread has salt in it.

Abstruse: No more salt means none of these foods can be produced in NYC:

Corned beef
Bologna
Ham
Hot dogs
Salad dressing
Bread (including pizza dough, bagels, pretzels, and donuts)
Peking duck
Dry-aged steaks/roasts
Pickles
Bacon

Butter
Cheese
Cookies
Soup

Apparently Mr. Ortiz does not live with women. I can picture telling my wife at the wrong time of the month that salt is bad for her:

Me: Honey, you should stop snorting that pile of salt. It's just not good for you.
Wife [LOOKS UP, PICKS UP GUN AND POINTS IT AT ME]: I'm sorry. I didn't quite catch what you said. Please continue.
Me: Uh..... nothin'...... nevermind.

Apparently it's silly seasoning in NY politics.

2010-03-11 12:03:21 PM
Aren't there some other salts that are used in cooking, like sodium bicarbonate? Is the law going to specify pure sodium chloride? Does that mean iodized salt is ok, or any sea salts that have other trace minerals?

The United States of Obama is a non-smoking nation! No smoking, no drugs, no alcohol, no women - unless you're married - no foul language, no red meat!

I have had food served to me at restaurants that has been too salty to eat. If I want really salty food then that is what the salt shakers at the table are for.

I cook a lot at home and prepare a lot of dishes that contain no added salt - though a few dishes such as pasta (with salt in the boiling water) or french fries really do seem to need salt.

Salt appears to be a substance that you can develop a tolerance to such that your perception of saltiness depends upon how much you are used to.

Alton Brown uses way too much salt, but I guess that is what he is used to.

HumbleGenius: Jimmy_James:
that would be carrying concealed salt and even more dangerous than licensed, regulated salt stores. think of the chilrun.

You're right, concealed salt could be dangerous. Better to just strap a salt lick to your belt.

nope, I can't support this either. only government salt officials should be able to carry salt licks. normal citizens are not trained to retain their salt and an evil restauranteur may wrestle the salt from them and use it to season an unsuspecting customer's meal. we just need to face the facts, more salt on the street will lead to more crime.

Abstruse: Gamer Grrrl: And honestly, the amount of salt that goes into home cooking is very small. The issue isn't home cooking, it's all the MSG in processed foods. I do a LOT of cooking from scratch, and I always get the low-sodium broths (and often butter, as well). I can always add salt to it if I need to.

You're wrong about MSG. It's mostly just plain salt that's added to it. There's nothing wrong with MSG compared to any other sodium-based flavorant.

Worried about eating too much salt/sodium? Stop eating TV dinners and canned shiat. That's where we get 80% or so of our sodium intake, and it usually tastes bland as hell because the salt used as a preservative and not a flavorant.

Uh, I mentioned MSG because MSG is used in most canned food products. It's not that MSG is inherently bad because it's MSG, but MSG is monosodium glutamate. It's why Campbell's Soup has such a high sodium content.

Waste of space and tax payers money. No one needs this sort of legislation. This guy should be absolutely ashamed of himself.

This is what happens when you don't know how food is prepared.

Or what "corned" means in "corned beef."

Don't be silly, corn is fine, this is just about salt.

It may just depend on how its worded. Ban on Salt? Ban on sodium? Cant you substitute Sodium with Magnesium or Potassium? Would the chemical reactions in the cooking process change much?

/or am i just being naive?

Ortiz believes that, by putting the control of the sodium intake amount into the customer's hands, it would give them an option to exercise a healthier diet and healthier lifestyle. But it wouldn't be in our hands to choose. You'd be forced into no or low sodium diet whether you like it or not citizen!

Note, he did not define salt as "sodium chloride" - the bill says "salt in any form." Salt is an ionized precipitate from a neutralization reaction. Banning it "in any form" means banning pretty much everything except de-ionized, reverse osmosis water.

It's not just Ortiz that's a moron, though. He has bill cosponsors! That means not only does one D-umbass think this is a good idea, but others do, as well.

It's time to outlaw lawmakers. Their stupidity is obviously a danger to the public.

Don't forget that iodized salt is a very important source of iodine, which is necessary for proper thyroid function. Could someone 'shop Lady Liberty with a big goiter? Mmm big-necked NY mamas....

You said it. Too much of most anything aint good. I don't see where banning salt will do any good. That said, the chef in the article that said banning salt would make people not come to NY anymore? He's an idiot too.

2010-03-11 12:22:55 PM
To bad bills of retainer are illegal. Otherwise the other legislators could just outlaw the lawmaker from eating food prepared with salt.

2010-03-11 12:23:25 PM
EvilEgg: At least it will be easy to find the restaurants that are violating the ban. Is there anyone eating there? Fine them.

That's what I was thinking. Ortiz's comments suggested it.
If banned, I guess patrons would have to brown bag it.
The restaurants could charge a corking fee and designer salt shakers would be the new thing to have.

MDGeist: When did the US get so ban happy? Aren't we suppose to be the land of the free?

Oh we've always had a puritanical streak to our politics. Prohibition is proof enough of that. recently though, instead of invoking God to justify our authoritarian tendencies we've started enacting banninations 'for our own good'. 'for the children' also works fairly well. But really it all comes back to the same Protestant/Quaker urge to live a pure and Godly life free of sin and temptation.

Next time you see someone telling you that smoking is bad or that cannabis shouldn't be legalized - just remember you're talking to a 17th century Protestant minister and not a rational human being.

MDGeist: When did the US get so ban happy? Aren't we suppose to be the land of the free?

That all depends on your definition of "free." I suppose if you want to truly be free, then you'd have to live somewhere that is not under any government rule, where you could literally do whatever you wanted with no repurcussions. Under a Democracy, as a citizen, you have "rights" and if the government wants to take away your right to salt, then by god, they can. I wish we had the right to walk down the street with open containers of alcohol whilst smoking a giant bong.

Back to the story, though, I hope assemblyman Ortiz gets a ton of papercuts from his bill...then we can pour salt in them.

/they'll take my salty bacon from my cold, dead hands
