List is fail without the Beastie Boys "Sound of Science".

/or maybe I'm just not enough of a nerd, but I only know 3 of the listed songs and only like one of them :-/

2010-03-11 12:17:33 AM
Um, Weezer got me laid in high school.

2010-03-11 12:34:14 AM
I doubt it. MC Frontalot isn't much older than me.

2010-03-11 12:40:21 AM
"sung by the father of nerdcore hip-hop"

Hate

2010-03-11 12:40:56 AM
Also ... FAIL without Freezpop. C'mon, now.

chemical_angel: Also ... FAIL without Freezpop. C'mon, now.

Less talk. More rokk.

MC Frontalot is awesome. Me and the wife hung out with him before a concert -- we were the only nerds brave enough to go talk to him -- and he's actually really cool, and an incredibly nice guy. I managed to talk with most of his band members too, and they're all fun people.

/cool story, bro.

Being Canadian = geeky? Who knew...

bighasbeen: Um, Weezer got me laid in high school.

She must have been a huge fan...

Only ever listened to Particle Man in Physics class. Friendly territory.

whereisian: Being Canadian = geeky? Who knew...

Was wondering that myself.

/Let's go to Canada!
//Let's leave today!

Also, no Aquabats at all? For shame, CNN. For shame.

2010-03-11 05:30:38 AM
In my 13 years in IT, I've known more than a few code monkeys (I'm not one of them...I'm a sysadmin dammit). Jonathan Coulton is awesome.

2010-03-11 05:47:49 AM
Im going to raise my freak flag higher and higher
And never be alone

They got the band just had the wrong song

2010-03-11 07:15:15 AM
Get off of my lawn. A lot of them weren't born when I was in high school.

I listened to black metal while being beat up in high school.

Then they found that one kid in the woods, came to my school to question me, but they got no answers.

I didn't get beat up again.

2010-03-11 07:41:36 AM
I hear Frontalot is a nice guy but god damn is he unlistenable.

List fails without mc chris.

2010-03-11 07:43:30 AM
silly article, enjoyable headline. i find subby's honesty refreshing

2010-03-11 08:02:52 AM
Where is Walk the Dinosaur?! (new window)

2010-03-11 08:03:31 AM
If the headline were to be read literally, I am pretty sure that "Subdivisions" would be #1, hands down.

bv2112: If the headline were to be read literally, I am pretty sure that "Subdivisions" would be #1, hands down.

I came thinking 'if White and Nerdy and Code Monkey aren't on this list, it's crap', found a reference to both in the article and love for Jonathon Coulton in the thread. I'd say the article succeeded.

/best friend was a code monkey during grad school, says the song is pretty damn accurate

2010-03-11 08:27:54 AM
so... is the first nerd anthem "your molecular structure" by mose allison?

2010-03-11 08:37:43 AM
7. "Particle Man," They Might Be Giants

Man! That one strung far back there... I can barely remember Shayna in 7th grade homeroom writing the words to that song on huge letter on the blackboard (this was '88? 89?)... I didn't even know the song at the time and really has a lot of overlap with the indie/alt music kids.

/I think a lot of Dr. Demento music really fit the bill (e.g. Roly Poly Fish Heads, et al).
//And I hate that Coulton song. It's too close to LOLSPeak.

2010-03-11 08:46:18 AM
Needs more art rock.

2010-03-11 09:04:35 AM
i nominate "mass nerder" by decendents.

2010-03-11 09:17:24 AM
"I like Big Butts"?

2010-03-11 09:24:04 AM
I wasn't beat up to any of those songs.
I was beat up to "Big Girls Don't Cry." or maybe "Patches" or "Dead Man's Curve."

/I can't remember.
//Maybe all of them.

2010-03-11 09:32:44 AM
Triangle man FTW. Think about it.

2010-03-11 09:38:14 AM
I used to beat up high school kids to NWA when I was in college.

2010-03-11 09:56:34 AM
I was beat up to "God Save The Queen" and "Clash City Rockers", but only because I was the only kid in school who didn't worship Skynyrd and AC/DC.

2010-03-11 10:28:53 AM
No Mr. Roboto? For shame.

2010-03-11 10:43:45 AM
Geeky and awesome - Blackalicious' 'Chemical Calisthenics'

Had to have been '90 or '91.

Why is the world in love again? Why are we marching hand in hand? Why are the ocean levels rising up? It's a brand new record for 1990. They Might Be Giants brand new ablum...Flood!

Still have it. On CD and cassette.

2010-03-11 10:58:15 AM
I am dissapoint for lack of "Conventional Lover"

2010-03-11 11:10:11 AM
would argue that On The Outside from Only A Lad would be a more apropriate selection for Oingo Boingo. Weird Science was like Tom Sawyer for Rush, the song that became popular commercially, but IMO not one I would place in my favorites.

They laugh at me aloud
They say I'm just a clown
That I ain't got no pride
I'm on the outside
The girls look really cute
They really make it work
They think I'm just a jerk
I'm on the outside
I never could sit still
I never was too hip
I never caught the ride
I'm on the outside

I'm on the outside, I'm on the outside now
This is where it all begins right here
On the outside lookin' in, I'm on the outside

I never was a punk
I never shot junk
I never even tried counter
Culture passed me right by
(I'm on the outside)

Don't talk to debutantes
Don't eat in restaurants
The patrons sit and stare
The waiters make wise cracks behind my back
(I'm on the outside)

Teachers there in school
They flunked me by the rule
They say I had no motivation, brains or dedication
I guess the imbeciles were right I'm on the outside

I'm on the outside, I'm on the outside now
This is where it all begins on the outside looking in
Looking in
At you
I'm just an alien through and through
Tryin' to make believe I'm you
Tryin' to fit
Just a stranger on the outside looking in

The disco makes me sick I
Wear the wrong clothes
I say the wrong things
You know I can't dance
My feet are much too wide (I'm on the outside)

You think you set the trends
You wear your hair just right
Your clothes are out-a-sight
Your house is modern really kitch
You get so macho when you're with your biatch
(I'm on the outside)

I see them go to work
I see them go to sleep
I see them on T.V.
I see them laugh and cry
I'm on the outside. I'm on the outside. I'm on the outside

I'm on the outside. I'm on the outside now
I'm on the outside
I'm on the outside now

/sums up my 80's
//outcast anthems FTW!

Raug the Dwarf: Had to have been '90 or '91.

okay, then it was late 8th grade and '90. 1991 I was in a different school.

thanks for the help!

Pretty much anything by TMBG validates this list.

How? And what happened during?

hooray greenlight!

This list would have been a triumph if it had included a different Jonathan Coulton song. I would have made a note here, "huge success." I wouldn't have been able to overstate my satisfaction.

/look at me, still talking, when there's science to do.

2010-03-11 11:32:03 AM
Dr. Who, Dr. Suess

I think you mean "DOCTOR Who" and "Dr. SEUSS", hmmmmm?

Frelling geek-poseurs.

FTFA: 1. "She Blinded Me With Science," Thomas Dolby

One of the greatest one-hit wonders in a decade known for them

What exactly is the official definition of one hit wonder? Thomas Dolby doesn't really fit it for me. Airhead? One of Our Submarines? Hyperactive?

if you're trying to name other songs by Thomas Dolby, you'll excuse the blank expression on everyone's faces. Granted, One Hit Wonder status does get called into question if the act has hits in other countries.

I like some of those songs. But I didn't get beaten up in high school much at all.

2010-03-11 12:55:40 PM
Dolby also walks the walk. He has helped invent the RMF file format,

But Thomas Dolby made his real money with the circuit that plays polyphonic ring tones.

Apparently I went to high school in a different era then the author of TFA.

We got beat up to songs like:

Onion on your belt. Onion on your belt. Looking like a fool with an onion on your belt.

TeddyRooseveltsMustache: I like some of those songs. But I didn't get beaten up in high school much at all.

That's because you were attached to Teddy Roosevelt.

No. It's close to cave man speak. Maybe you should pay attention to it.

/seeing him tomorrow at the Birchmere

7. "Particle Man," They Might Be Giants
Brainy lyrics and accordions combine to make this one a classic. Appearing on Warner Bros. "Tiny Tunes" didn't hurt either.
