People surf in BC? Cause the water in WA state is freezing.

Tof is not the type of place I generally enjoy, but it's pretty clear those franchises do not 'belong' in a setting like that, anymore than the Starbucks sign I saw in a Beijing Hutong.

Didn't San Fran ban the same type of crap years and years ago?

Tim Hortons belongs everywhere in Canada.farking cold-water hippies.

Tofino doesn't exactly strike me as 'franchise'. Full of expensive 'resorts', and pricey restaurants, or little mom and pop shops.

2010-03-11 12:46:02 AM
I can understand Icky Micky's and 5-dollar-cup-of-burned-arabica, but isn't Tim Horton's a national treasure up there? I mean surely there's gotta be at least a few Bob McKenzie types in that little hamlet. Those dirty commie hippies have obviously never tried the little crack nuggets known as Timbits. I mean a box of those after smoking some BC homegrown is going-going-gone like the possibility of a good Lost Boys sequel. If there was ever a reason to snap like that Choi kid with a pair of clippers instead of a Glock, attempting to ban Timmy Ho's in a Canuckistani hamlet would be it.

I'm pretty sure they don't have Waffle Houses in Canada.

Seems to me that to preserve their "atmosphere" they shouldn't really want to ban the businesses so much as regulate their signage/architecture.

Nuno311: Didn't San Fran ban the same type of crap years and years ago?

Ummm . . . no. Where the hell did you come up with that? For example, McDonald's website lists 19 San Francisco locations, and Starbuck's website shows close to 100 SF locations.

im so far 3/18 for roll up.
if i had to work in that town... i wouldn't.

2010-03-11 12:57:26 AM
I thought they did this years ago. I seem to remember that the only reason a Best Western was able to open a location (the Tin Wis -- a great hotel, actually) was that the franchise is owned by a local native band.
Maybe they're just trying to make the ban more formal now?

I've gone over 40 years without hearing bout Tofino... now twice in 2 weeks?! Best surf town? Keeping out buisness?

/Something fishy is happening there. Too much hype for a little town.

ahh, Tofino... the land of smelly hippies, pot, and mussels.
not to say I haven't had a few lost weekends there in my youth, but that place desperately needs a munchies outlet.

/or they could just drive down to Uculet, but how environmentally sound is that?

Timmy's is/was mostly Eastern. The chain was pretty rare in the West until the last wave of migration (starting ~10 years ago) of Torontulas moving into Vancouver and other landing points in BC/Alta.

And really, Tim Hortons is about the worst food you can find. It's like they took normal food and found a way to crappify it all so as not to offend anyone who doesn't like flavour. They even screwed up hash browns. I didn't think that was possible.

There's a great little pizza place, and a fantastic fish & chips shack right downtown. Of course, being Tofino, everything is 200% as expensive as it should be. Last time I was at Long Beach it cost me something like 15$ just to park.

I loved Tofino when I visited, many years ago. Wasn't expensive at all, actually, though I can't say what it's like now. The way I see it, if they don't want them there, they should feel free not to have them. If people don't like it, they don't have to visit. Honestly I don't know why some people get so hot and bothered for all places to become totally cookie-cutter.

Big deal. It's far from the first town that doesn't allow franchises.
The only problem with blanket bans is that most gas stations end up also being forced just outside of city lines.

Ravage: Who's Tim Hortons?

It's actully Horton's Whos. Not sure just who Tim is.

FTA

moves to ban McDonald's, Starbucks, and Tim Hortons

BK, Caribou and (I dunno, Dennys?) should be able to clean right the fark up in that town.

2010-03-11 01:29:37 AM
Good for them! I can think of at least ten reasons why this is a great move. Chief of which can be found by looking at where each of these multi-national corporations get their food.

2010-03-11 01:33:18 AM
Narrative: "We're keeping things 'real,' eschewing franchises and globalized, cookie-cutter capitalism from our wondrous shores."

Reality: "We're marketing ourselves to yuppies and neo-hippies who have both a distaste for a specific level of business/corporatization and a cache of expendable income. Come spend your money in Tofino: we're totally indie!"

Having lived in Victoria for a while now, I feel pretty comfortable indicting most of what passes as "radical" politics around here as generically aestheticized, low-brow anti-capitalism. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that, but it's just as much an economically-motivated lifestyle ploy as anything (or anywhere) else.

If people in Tofino really wanted to be radical they'd bulldoze the farking uber-spas and start growing their own food instead of flying/boating/trucking it in daily from the mainland.

wtf is tim hortons and why is there a thread about it every week? is it some type of canadian coffee shop? isn't that considerably less relevant to most peoples interests than an in and out thread every week? is there anything that happens in canada that isn't tim hortons or hockey related in some way? I'd much rather here about blimpies shops in the UK than yet another tim hortons thread. Can we work on this please fark?

/blimpies has the worst chain hamburgers on earth.

I don't know why I hate that song though. I usually love The Planet Smashers. Super Orgy Porno Party is still one of my all-time favourite songs and I love the video.
