"There's cultural differences, and different cultural values placed on animals in particular. So if we can implement some sort of training, or if the government can implement some kind of training, hopefully we can change some attitudes and raise awareness"

I've heard of a few incidents like this in Ottawa. We have a large middle eastern population, and I wonder if it has to do with the Arabic cultural perception of dogs as "unclean".

Our government is actually supposed to teach people about Canadian cultural norms when the immigrate. But they won't even admit that it's okay to be gay here.

He didn't sue because this story is from Canada.

Instead of a lawsuit, you'll notice that our instinctual reaction was to suggest another government program to educate people about being sensitive to the needs of the visually challenged.

/Because that's the way we roll

Pretty crappy situation - food restaurant or not, service dogs should be allowed everywhere. They are better trained than most kids.

I read the headline, and then saw the .ca so I can't give the guy as much credit as I would a US blind man, who would have the Subway headquarters lawyers foaming at the mouth at the chance for billable hours. I hate our country sometimes.

So, what you're saying is that you think that blind people should be discriminated against? And that immigrants to Canada who come from the assholes of the world shouldn't be taught that here in the first world, we try to be decent to the handicapped?

Or are you just stupid? Wait. Let me guess.

You can't go to Subway if you're blind, how are you going to point to which peppers you want and then say "no, the other ones" when they go for the wrong kind ?

I won't eat at Subway either.

Even the most poorly trained seeing eye dog knows the difference between green peppers, jalepeno peppers, and banana peppers. Don't you know anything?

Subway really does blow. To lower prices, they've been reducing the meat content to the point where all you can taste is the crappy toppings.

I got a tuna sammich there once. When I saw how much tuna the kid was putting on the sammich I thought he was kidding. A Cruelty Free tuna sammich! No tunas were harmed in the making of this sammich!

Manager apologizes...

Nobody at Subway would appear on camera, but the manager told CBC News the employee involved is new to the job and to the country, and he didn't know the rules.

Nothing to see here. Move a long folks.

Props to the guy not being over zealous by suing them.

About 10 years ago they cut the bread that dumb way, with a little "V" in the top and then just piled the sandwich stuff inside and put the little "V" back on top. That drove me nuts. One day I asked if they could cut the bread the normal way. They said no, all the bread was already cut. I haven't been to Subway since.

They were probably afraid the dog would realize it was related to his meatball sub.

That's why we have verbal communication. "Banana peppers" is a lot easier to identify than you pointing at a weird angle through the customer-filth guard and saying "that."

Tuna on flatbread with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, bell pepper, and salt & pepper. It cures blindness.

Best part: you watch them prepare your food and can be assured there were no overt shenanigans involved. Comes in handy if you happen to be wearing a certain type of uniform.

Yeah, they don't do that anymore. In fact it was almost 10 years ago when I worked at a food court that had a subway and customers had to ask the subway sandwich "artist" for the old way (v slice on top).

No real loss. Used to only eat at Subway when I was ridiculously hungry and the alternative was fast food. Then I got food poisoning from Subway and never went back.

As for service animals in places like that... I don't see why it's a big deal. It's a dog. There aren't a lot of diseases communicable between dogs and humans. I'd rather eat something that's been dropped on a dog than something that's been within 2 feet of a toddler. *shudder*

Ah man, I hated Subway for that in college. I went once or twice and then not again for ten years. It's not as crappy as it was then.

No idea how that chain made it with such a crap assed start.

In the US, Subway might be completely in the right. In Tennessee at least, there are laws against having animals in any store or restaurant that sells food. I completely understand the dudes plight, but Subway could get sued if the dog somehow brought something in the store that contaminated the food.

By being cheap. That's all there really is to it. The food sucks, but you can fill yourself up for $5, and it's got actual plant matter in it, unlike most fast food.

Firehouse Subs rocks. I have not willingly set foot in a Subway in 10 years. I don't want a huge fancy piece of bread for lunch, I want a sandwich with meat on it.

why is this an issue? seriously. Not criticizing you, just curious. I prefer it that way actually since it helps keep the meat cheese and veggies inside the bun.

I also agree: props to the dude for not going all legalistic. Bad press should be sufficient punishment.

Yeah I know. I don't know the specifics of the law, for all I know there could be an exemption for animals that assist those with disabilities.

Naman: By being cheap

I remember reading about the guy who started Subway how he opened one location and it did nothing. So he took the money he had left and opened a second location and all of a sudden it took off. Basically people figured if he had two locations it had to be doing well and thus good, so they came in the door.

So do blind people have a better sense of smell, so they can smell the rancid meat and rat droppings at Subway, instead of see them?

The old 'V' slice holds more toppings without spilling. They changed it to save money- not because people requested.

Couldn't he have just asked someone else to buy it for him? ...or leave the dog outside and stumble around?

i can never understand how subway does as good as it does. it's a sandwich and a horrible one at that. for a lot less money you could make your own in less time it takes to stand in line and wait for someone to prepare it. and the taste will be a hundred times better.

There doesn't need to be an exemption.

The Americans With Disabilities Act is a Federal Law and as such supercedes all state laws in the matter. It is illegal to deny service to a blind person because of a service animal.

The laws are the same in Canada with the Nation Persons with Disabilities act. If the customer had filed a complaint, it would have been enough to have the license of that business pulled.

poopeater: Nothing to see here. Move a long folks.

Props to the guy not being over zealous by suing them.

Actually, there is something to see here. The man in the article just can't see it.

Now that I've broken the ice with a humorous yet insensitive comment:
It's the company's responsibility to train employees. I'm sure they told this new employee about the "no pets" policy, which I'd bet is partly to blame for his reaction...not just the cultural difference. If they can explain all the other major policies during orientation, explaining what a service animal is and how to identify one shouldn't be too hard. Especially when screwing up that particular policy lesson can lead to bad press at best and lawsuits and government sanctions at worst.

Furthermore, I think blind-guy is kinda a douche anyway. Subway's lowest paid employee (new immigrant sandwich maker) farks up. Subway apologizes and invites him back. I wouldn't think anything less of him if he never goes back; I've boycotted places for more benign offenses. But then blind-douche goes to the newspaper and creates some bad press for Subway. Now it's changed from "I don't want to deal with their crap" to "I want to hurt their bottom line because of one poorly trained new employee."

zahadum party planner: why is this an issue? seriously. Not criticizing you, just curious.

Dude, I made "Grinders" for a living for 12 years.
I was homeless when I took the job.
I Bought my first home and first brand new vehicle working at a shop that made sandwiches. One thing is for certain. If we had tried that "V" thing, the customers would have tossed the "grinders" right back at us. We had a simple formula.
Fresh baked bread daily. I can still make it from scratch.
Fresh sliced ingredients, and made to order.
I would make them faster than the cash register could ring them up.

I once ate at a subway, and they did the "V" cut thing, and I was watching the dude, and asked why they did that. He said, "That's how we do it here"
I ate the cruddy thing, and never went back.
It's a lame gimmick, like the conveyor convection for Quizno's.

Either you are making food to eat, or you are putting on a show.
But if it isn't good food, the show isn't worth it.
