Does this "chronic pain" have anything to do with being slapped frequently upside the head?

I dispute the idea that childhood trauma causes all hormonal disturbance and acting out. I'd blame hormones in beef first. Some of the nicest people I know have ADD and kids with behavior problems. And "behavior problem" is a relative term, I have a "back talker" myself, and she's raised better than the kids who "behave" and play GTA all night.

Depends on where the chronic pain is located. My first guess was they'd invented a new term for ass-beating.

You turned it into a pothead thread if anything with a post like that.

Also, what the hell is the government going to do with a list of pro-pot citizens? Hell 1/4rd of the posts in any given pot thread are "Well I don't smoke pot but we really need to stop wasting time and resources on this benign drug when meth is running rampant at a higher rate, etc." I think you understand wrong.

as someone who knows adults who suffer from 'chronic' pain that has been prevalent for years with no conclusive diagnosis of reasons for it, and was also most likely a problem child, i am inclined to believe this.

I work for a private testing firm that uses Scantron sheets for multiple choice questions. We provide accommodations for kids with special needs, including marking answers on the test booklet if, for some legitimate reason, the kid can't use the answer sheet (it's most commonly due to a neurological disorder affecting visual tracking, but there are other reasons).

Once a mom asked for that accommodation because her kid "couldn't deal with the sensation of using a pencil on paper."

Is this real?

(We let him use the accommodation rather than arguing about it).

Insidious Twinkle: Is this real?

Yes.

You know how a fair number of people are very sensitive to things like sock toe seams, nails on a chalkboard, etc? There are people further along that continuum. More sensitive to more things. It's a hallmark of autism. It may or may not be related. Or they may just share that symptom. Not a lot known about it.

On the flip side, there is the sensory seeking. And you'll get them both in the same kid, just different sensations at different times. This is where everything from nailbiting to headbanging to hairpulling come from. They just crave some particular type of stimulation to calm them. My five year old has this thing with her feet. Rubbing them on stuff. Rubbing them on meeeee. Stinky kid feet. Ugh. It's part of the job though.

FTA: "Other adult problems associated with childhood behavioural problems include long-term psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse."

It's not uncommon for "chronic pain" to be a manifestation of drug-seeking behavior by an addict.

Hi all, as a former "problem child" and current chronic pain sufferer. I think there is validity to this. I have three compressed discs in my neck from a roll over car crash. I think the very stressful early years of my life wore down my immune system and left me with some very poor coping skills. I agree that the combination of past life difficulties and chronic pain set people up for addiction to narcotics - that's why I love Colorado.

From this the researchers found that children with severe behavioural problems had double the risk of chronic widespread pain.

Yeah, no shiat! "THIS JUST IN!! Kids that annoy those around them, tend to get their asses kicked a lot...more at eleven!"

If my child has severe behaviorial problems, he's going to have AT LEAST double the risk of widespread pain...though it's probably going to be localized to his little butt.

/while my mom gloats in the karma.

I support personal choice in nearly all things for people who aren't so retarded that they need court appointed conservators to make sure they are drinking milk instead of soft scrub. I have vaccinated children but got political about the rushed to market controversial H1N1 vaccine and the fact that consenting to it violated your medical privacy rights. Seeing as how I am not living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland right now, the decision not to pollute my children with that particular product was spot on.

Now if you want to get all hot and bothered over some "research" with its nebulous definition of a relative term and it's nebulous "disruptive" relationship with unspecified hormonal disorders, then by all means go right ahead. Even a strong correlation does not prove causation. Even if the study was worth a damn this article was written for stupid people. Fear and insecurity sell, and the victim mentality created by some psychological theorists is taking over our culture.

I have long held the belief that you can tell that someone will claim to have fibromyalgia purely from observing their personality. There is a "type" that I run across often and I can predict with accuracy that they will reveal (quickly) that they know all about pain (usually when I am discussing pain control for a cancer patient) because they have fibromyalgia.

My wife was diagnosed with that (incorrectly) - and upon hearing the doctor's description and doing a bit of research, all I could come up with as a definition was 'You've got an inflammation somewhere'.

Is that really it? It really came off as a medical catchall for otherwise unexplained pain.

/Thanks doc. Super job. You've diagnosed my wife with 'Having a pain'. We had no idea. Cockbag.
