Yeah the doctors here at work are ordering vitamin D levels on damn near anyone and most notably breast cancer patients. All goes back to some study linking vitamin D and cancer recurrence rates.

2010-03-10 05:14:49 PM
As far as Dr. Joseph Mercola is concerned, vitamin D is the magic bullet we've all been looking for.

Can't think of a better reason to be skeptical than that.

*disclaimer*
The above statement is intended to display my undisguised disgust for Mercola and in no way represents the last word on the effectiveness of Vitamin D, which has yet to be conclusively proven but may still hold some benefits at slightly higher levels than are currently recommended.

Didn't RTFA, did you?

"Vitamin D appears to reduce your risk of dying from virtually ANY disease," he wrote on his popular Web site. His recommendation? Get more sun, relax in a tanning bed or try supplements such as "Sunshine Mist," a vitamin D spray he sells.

I am one of those vitamin warriors who takes lots of vitamins and supplements, but I only stick with the stuff that has shown some efficacy in scientific studies.

For vitamin D, I have an ultraviolet lamp which I run sometimes in the winter months. In Spring and summer there is no problem, I get plenty of vitamin D when I go out for long walks.

/ some things are very over sold, like for instance B vitamins, I cannot imagine why you would need any B vitamins if you eat normal healthy foods unless you are very old and have lost the ability to absorb B-12 orally.

So skin cancer is out now? Or is it actually caused by sunscreen products? I can't keep all the alternative medicine facts straight anymore. I should take one of my 1000 mg GABA pills and just quit worrying about it.

I remember working at a water park in a suburb when I was in high school. A bunch of, shall we say, "urban" children showed up one day. One of the urban children was running and I said, "Hey, what's that sign say?" referring to the "Walk" sign. The kid replied, "Milk."

Please, for the love of God, stop fortifying our foods with crap. I eat a balanced diet for one and for another, vitamins in natural sources tend to occur with the trace elements, minerals, enzymes, etc. that your body needs to actually use them. Pumping your body full of vitamins while ignoring the rest of the picture causes more harm than good, as, for example, your body needs to maintain a certain balance of vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and copper. Too much zinc inhibits iron uptake. Too much iron also inhibits iron uptake, so you can't just use the "Mongolian Hoards" technique either.

Not only that, calcium in orange juice tastes horrible.

Because fear isn't a good motivator for sales or anything.

Okay, first I want to say "Does he look like a duck?"

Second, this entry from the Urban Dictionary:
Pissing through a window air conditioning unit. The effects after are known as "sunshine Mist". Best when tried in early morning hours.

I pissed through old Ms. Williams unit as she lit a cigarette. Sunshine Mist accomplished.

The B vitamins come in very handy for folks like me who drink a ton, so I'll keep buyin' them.
