Man everyone is riding Simmons so hard lately. WTF is up with Olbermann by the way?

way to lift that hl almost word for word, submitter

Jeez subby. I want Bill Simmons and his father to both to join Corey Haim soon, but even I wouldn't stoop so low as to steal the headling.

2010-03-10 01:30:14 PM
The sports guy needs to write a Nomar column today, subbs.

After all, Simmons and Nomar haven't been any good for roughly the same amount of time.

Simmons can't really write that well anymore (except about the NBA, which I love), but his podcasts are great

I've heard his voice on a number of sports talk shows when he was a guest and I can't imagine listening to an entire podcast of his.

One Corey down, one to go.

"So I decided it was time to write a column comparing members of the Brat Pack to Celtics teams of the past -(and even though the Coreys weren't technically in the Brat Pack, it was close enough, like how Tom Brady wasn't technically a Celtic, but you can't think of the Celtics without thinking of the Patriot dynasty.)

I called my Dad and he just was shaking his head over the phone, but he told me Red Auerbach once smoked a cigar called a 'career stake' and wasn't Haim's career based on 'The Lost Boys?'"

Only with Simmons, they do. I wouldn't be surprised if they started updating readers about Bill's meal choices in the future.

The website is actually fairly entertaining, especially if you don't care for ESPN. They've been following the Olbermann-Simmons slap-fight for a while, though this has nothing to do with that.

I don't care about ESPN at all. I have no positive or negative feelings. I care about sports.

Quick, everybody, let's take every tweet Simmons posts seriously because we can't think of something interesting to report on!

2010-03-10 05:59:14 PM
Simmons is alright, but the Ali thing was nuts.

2010-03-10 06:02:21 PM
I generally like Bill Simmons columns, but he mentions his dad and that crazy friend of his way too much. It's like reading a Howie Carr column. Even odds he either mentions a Kennedy, uses the word "Hackarama", or mentions Whitey Bulger and anything connected to him.

DamnYankees: Is this what Deadspin does? They just repost people's tweets?

And Subby just reposted Deadspin's repost of Simmons' tweet.

The twitter bird should be a duck so it won't echo.

/Yes, I know... mythbusters did it

2010-03-10 06:04:24 PM
Heh. I'm a Simmons fan but that was funny.

I said this before, but while I disagree with the Ali-Tiger column, he at least explained his reasoning and made some valid points. It didn't sway me, but it wasn't as crazy far-fetched as it's been portrayed.

exick: I've heard his voice on a number of sports talk shows when he was a guest and I can't imagine listening to an entire podcast of his.

The voice takes some getting used to, but I'm there. The content is usually very good, I think.

Eh. I still like the site, but they seem to be taking more unnecessary pot shots lately. Like this post for example. Yeah we get it, you thought the Ali/Tiger comparison was stupid. Let's move on.

2010-03-10 06:28:17 PM
SnakeLee: Man everyone is riding Simmons so hard lately. WTF is up with Olbermann by the way?

I dunno, you brought him up.

As to your probable question as to "Why do we have to put up with Lawrence O'Donnell night after night on Countdown", Keith has been taking time off to be with his dying father.

He had a similar stint two years ago, and thus Rachel Maddow has Keith's dead mom to thank for getting her own show.

2010-03-10 06:31:12 PM
FreakinB: he at least explained his reasoning and made some valid points.

Exactly. It's an opinion piece. It's meant to cause a conversation, and make people consider that maybe he won't just automatically come back and be a juggernaut. But because people refuse to understand the point of anything anymore when they can just easily write something off because of an insignificant thing that they find offensive, the valid arguments were ignored.

The comparison to Ali was simply a means to get to what the article was actually about.

HA!! Lincoln. Did he ever drive backwards to get his pregnant mother to the hospital? Don't think so.

Did Lincoln star in The Lost Boys? Didn't think so. Be in the Lost Boys and then talk Lincoln...punk biatch

I know some people aren't down with Drew, but I find most of his stuff to be hilarious. Especially when he just starts ranting on KSK about the Vikings.

For those of you who don't read that site, Drew is a die-hard Vikings fan, but doesn't care for either Brett Favre or Brad Childress. His column after Favre threw that last-second pass to beat the Niners kinda sums up his style. (new window)

And his weekly skewering of Peter King makes me miss the greatness of Fire Joe Morgan.

Say people can't write anymore is funny. Did he go senile? Did he lose his hands in a badger accident? Oh, you just haven't liked a couple articles? Got it. Go listen to a podcast.

2010-03-10 07:25:08 PM
So, what era does this mark the end of, exactly?

2010-03-10 07:31:57 PM
The only worthwhile tweet from Simmons so far this month:

Bizarre timing for Dunleavy's demise. The Clips are like a pregnant wife - no sense even bothering to try to figure them out.

2010-03-10 07:33:51 PM
Don't people get that Simmons writes as a fan? His opinions are just that - opinions. You don't have to agree with him. The amount of butthurt about his pieces is crazy.

2010-03-10 07:42:58 PM
Expect 5,000 words on how this is a bigger death than the Lincoln assassination by 5 PM

Yeah right. He already wrote his column for the month.

Simmons went south when he figured out that recording yourself talking with your friends is easier than writing. Yeah, podcaatts are fun but when you do ten of those for every column, you're just lazy.

2010-03-10 07:46:21 PM
Somehow I don't think the "end of an era" comment was completely serious.

At least go big if you are going to defend the idiot. Like this.

How very DARE anyone not like Simmons! The nerve! He writes like a kid out there. A regular storyslinger. You HAVE to like Simmons or you are a commie. He never hurt nobody.

It is now. The site was great when Will Leitch ran it, but AJ Daulerio is a dumb-fark, mean spirited retard who has pretty much ruined what the site was supposed to be. I can't stand what Deadspin has become, which is sad, because I used to love it.

Yeah, there are some moments of AJ's reign that makes me cringe. The weekend he handed the site over to Moe is at the forefront. I miss the featured ESPN comment of the day, suggested questions for the daily chats, media approval rankings, etc.

This. I basically click on Leitch's baseball previews and Drew's stuff. Craggs can do something worthwhile every now and then, but really takes himself too seriously as a writer/satirist.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if the Gawker empire trashed the current regime or just sold off the web site altogether.

GimpyNip: IAmRight: Quick, everybody, let's take every tweet Simmons posts seriously because we can't think of something interesting to report on!

Look anyone who has been on the Sports tab long enough knows there is one Simmons obsessed (so say certain Red Sox fans in a lame attempt to have a meme amongst themselves) greenlight monger (what is that, someone who gets a lot of greenlights...? how horrible of me!) who is from a rival state and also wrote for a wrestling site (411Mania.com is not a "wrestling site," it features sections on that, movies/TV, gaming, MMA, sports, politics, etc.) where he was mocked for writing like Simmons (only by said Red Sox fans for no reason beyond "You write columns about movies THAT REFERENCES OTHER MOVIES!!!11" and the whole forced-meme business) that would submit such a headline.
