Just this week ABC's Dr. Richard Besser reported that Fosamax, one of a class of bisphosphonates used to treat osteoporosis that is supposed to make bones stronger, can actually weaken them.

I used to forget to carry the sign in math too.

Twice doctors have prescribed medications for Jeanette McLearen with great certainty, only to second-guess the outcomes.

It's not as big of a risk with most of the oral bisphosphonates but enough to where it is now listed in informed consents for tooth extractions though. Still waiting to see my first complication from it but just like the lottery, someone always eventually wins the prize.

R.I.P. Jaws

I was diagnosed with osteopenia at 35. I read up on Boniva, which is what was prescribed, and never filled the prescription. I discussed it with my dentist, who said that his wife's doctor was being pushed to take it as well. He told me to do as I pleased but that he did not recommend it.

I figure that between 35 and death, I will probably have oral surgery. Most people do.

At the same time, I am the stereotype for osteoporosis: thin and fair and fine-boned.

I think kids who are getting bullied at school should be prescribed this hormone in small vials which they could inject into their food. The bully will sustain himself on the nerd's food for some period of time then, when the doctor gives the word, the small nerdy kid would go to recess and break every bone in the bully's body.

Yeah...poor ass loses his jawbone, and the rage-blinded 'Son of Sam' goes all HULK SMASH! in court. The day gone, and both the courthouse and pillars of the community have been demolished.
Tsk, tsk....

Shoulda taken a leaf from the President's book on how to handle this...get together, fill a stein and each relate a pair of bullshiat stories (a la Four Yorkshiremen) about...oh, say killing lions with their bare hands, crazy-but-beautiful women who insisted on tying them up with various ligatures and then trying to give them a makeover (and bees...which can get one into a helluva lot more trouble than you may think).

The jaw is formed from the mandible (movable) and the maxilla (immobile).

But seriously folks, this woman was on "hormone replacement therapy" (HRT) for 15 YEARS, to treat a "disease" (menopause) that isn't (and never was) a disease, but sells a LOT of drugs.

HRT dramatically INCREASES the risk of breast cancer (along with blood clots, stroke, heart disease, dementia, with countless others being added almost daily), as this woman found out, so she had to quit the hormones, but was prescribed Fosamax to treat osteopenia, ANOTHER "disease" that isn't a disease, but sells a LOT of drugs.

HRT (estrogens, largely derived from the piss of pregnant horses - swallow, baby!) has been known to cause breast and uterine cancer since the 1940's. Yet it was the BEST SELLING DRUG in the world until 2002, when shiat hit the Pfan.

Fosamax (and cousins) have been KNOWN to cause serious side effects (like jaw-dropping) for some time now - yet they remain on the market.

The FDA is charged with making sure that our pharmaceuticals are "safe and effective". I believe the process goes something like this.

FDA: "Are these drugs safe and effective?"

DrugCo: "Well, they're sort of safe, relatively..."

FDA: "Dammit man, what we want to know is, ARE THEY EFFECTIVE?"

DrugCo: "Yes. We stand to make billions!"

FDA: APPROVED

/still no cure for death
//the doctor will see you now
