I have often wondered what it is like to be very attractive. I know a few very attractive people - women - and according to them, while it is easy to biatch about how annoying it is to get hit on a lot, or being judged based on your looks, it's mostly just a huge advantage. One girl I know has an MFA from Sarah Lawrence and does translation work for pretty decent cash. It's not as though she's not respected for her intellect - she's hellasmart. But when you interview the translators are you going to pick the fresh-faced, fashionable lass with the beguiling eyes, or Klaus, the large, sweaty 45 year old expert in non-Indo-European languages? Who do you want hanging around the office?

There's just something romantic about the whole thing. Stories and songs and such. I don't particularly like the way it affects me, but I find myself being nicer to pretty girls because, off the bat, I want THEM to like ME more. My tone will change if I find out she's a biatch, but generally I'm a much more pleasant individual.

Anyway, I say if you've got it, use it; just don't be a biatch about it or take too much advantage.

The beautiful advantage applies to non-media jobs as well. A 2007 study by Daniel Hamermesh and Jeff Biddle published in the Journal of Labor Economics revealed that attractive folks earned 5 percent more in hourly wages than their average-looking counterparts. Attractive people also earned 9 percent more per hour than the plainest people (uglies).


The evolutionary reason we find someone attractive is because they're displaying characteristics that indicate they're physically healthy - clear skin, symmetrical features, toned muscles and so on. Obviously, healthy people are going to make better employees than unhealthy people - they can work harder, don't take as many sick days and are usually more intelligent (intelligence and health both correlate strongly with good nutrition in childhood). Essentially, the study is saying that the sort of people who are likely to be healthy, intelligent and hard working earn more, which is hardly a goddamn surprise.

Or it could just be that everyone hates fatties.

I think the more attractive half also has higher average IQ, though the stdev is probably much lower than the general population. BTW, physical attractiveness is by definition the mean in physical attributes. They're the goalpost of cohesiveness in the human crowd, counter-balancing the force of divergence in genetic competition.

I was a beautiful baby, a plain kid, a beautiful teen & twenty-something, then got lupus and got prednisone, and got my looks handed back to me ruined. You know what? Being plain is better than being beautiful. When someone is kind to me, I know why, now. All of my relationships are better. I see my beautiful daughters going through stuff plain women only think they want to experience.

Also, in a chem lab, it's the pretty girls who hate everything, whine constantly, and can't be bothered to use distilled water where required. I never had a pretty lab partner who was worth anything. The guys and the plain girls all buckled down and did the work. The pretty girls wanted their titrations to go faster, their scales to work without being zeroed, and often forgot to put on their goggles, putting their pretty eyes at unnecessary risk.
