Obligatory "this isn't ironic you asshat" post.

I think it is, but wanted to get it out of the way.

2003-04-24 01:15:39 PM
I didn't know that it was possible to cheat on a take-home exam. The teacher was really trusting the students a bit too much if he thought that they wouldn't try to get together in groups to take the test...

2003-04-24 01:29:22 PM
Many students have admitted cheating since the instructor confronted them, Eichenseyer said.
What were they thinking. Deny everything. Did the professor use the jedi mind trick on them.

2003-04-24 01:38:12 PM
I'm thinking that it wasn't a multiple-guess test; and essays that sound alike might indicate some hint of collaboration.

2003-04-24 01:51:45 PM
and I'm thinking it wasn't an essay if the class was "Accounting". ;)
more like fill out accounts payable, receivable, balance sheet, etc..

This is too much for me...

Must refill my coffee, must laugh at professor.

Question: When has a take home quiz been for an individual?

2003-04-24 02:57:18 PM
HA!

Many students have admitted cheating since the instructor confronted them, Eichenseyer said. Students who did much worse on the in-class test will get that score as their grade for the test.

Yes obviously the students who did worse on the in-class test cheated on the take home test. After all the change in grades couldn't have anything to do with the fact that the take home test was open books, notes, internet and had a huge time limit of till the next class while the in-class test had non of that going for it. Besides, what kind of ass rats out their classmates for taking the test in groups?

2003-04-24 05:00:22 PM
I think the teacher made a mistake giving the take home test in the first place. It should have taken place in the classroom only.

There's plenty of cheating going on, why make it easier for the little bastards? You either know the subject or you don't.

2003-04-24 05:47:32 PM
Dude, what'd you put for number 7?

2003-04-24 06:11:53 PM
Never understood the concept of "take home tests"... doesn't seem like much of a test to me. Especially with something like Accounting. But what I love is the ones who didn't cheat turning in the ones who did. Good for them.

actual words out of one of my accounting professor:

"here's your final case, it's not like your other cases you've had this semester. this case is to be done individually and will count for 50% of your grade........ who am i kidding, i know all of you guys are just gonna get together and work on it in one big group. just make sure each of you turn one in next week."

2003-04-24 07:05:16 PM
How exactly do you cheat on a take home exam?

2003-04-24 08:00:11 PM
besides having someone else do it for you.

2003-04-24 08:00:13 PM
I think the test was actually to see if they would learn from the Enron Exec, in which it is my opinion that they all passed.

2003-04-24 08:00:20 PM
Actually as far as I know accounting exams are also open-book and notes are allowed... at least they used to be when my cousing did it.

2003-04-24 08:01:08 PM
I meant the in-class type.

2003-04-24 08:02:18 PM
I've had some take-home exams where you're not allowed to look at books or notes and shiat. But Jesus, if you're gonna cheat, deny everything you dumb pricks

2003-04-24 08:02:28 PM
OBVIOUS would be more like it

2003-04-24 08:02:42 PM
What the fark is a "Take home test"? Oh, wait, this is what we used to call "homework".

2003-04-24 08:03:27 PM
take home test = homework worth a lot of points

damn you! you took my joke a minute before i posted.
haha great minds

That's a longggggg ass headline.

2003-04-24 08:06:51 PM
" I wasn't cheating sir, I was making the most of my resources."

2003-04-24 08:08:03 PM
Doesnt a take home test mean your supposed to cheat?

2003-04-24 08:09:45 PM
It doesn't say it was open-book or notes. Take-home exams aren't necessarily so...I've had take-home engineering exams that were closed-everything. And no one cheated! Even though the exam was hellishly hard. I seem to remember an average of about 40%.

2003-04-24 08:09:47 PM
That article was like, hard to follow and stuff.

Either you're joking, or you don't know squat about what "Accounting" actually covers.

Here are the course descriptions for Accounting department at the college I work at:

http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/admission/catalog/2002-2003/08a_Courses_Study/ economics-accounting.htm

Does that sound like "accounts payable" and "balance sheets" to you? Mind you, I still think that Accounts and Accountancy students are a bunch of Fudds, but I've got to give them props for the amount of mind-numbing work that they (or at least the good ones) do.

An easy way to stop people from using books they're not suppose to is to require a bibliography.

"Actually as far as I know accounting exams are also open-book and notes are allowed... at least they used to be when my cousing did it."

None of my exams in college were take home. Most of the assigned homework was optional, but if you didn't do it you were farked come exam time. Sucks when you only have 3 exams and one cumulative final that counts towards your grade for a semester.

2003-04-24 08:12:15 PM
What kind of asshat would rat a another classmate out? the only time I would get pissed at cheating was on a curved test. which I doubt these were, being take-home.

I'm an engineering student, collaboration (whether sanctioned by the prof or not) is the name of the game.

2003-04-24 08:13:11 PM
Accounts = Accountants

/carry on

2003-04-24 08:14:33 PM
this reminds me of how to write reports

It's not palgarism!

Old joke, still good:

How much is two plus two?
Engineer: Four
Accountant [draws blinds, whispers]: How much do you want it to be?

2003-04-24 08:15:33 PM
I've been in a few classes where some of the class suggests a take-home final or some such. The teacher usually counters with "OK, but since you'll have a week to work on it instead of two hours, it'll be about five times as hard." That usually stops the requests.

If you're okay with mind-numbing work, and you're good at chem, congratulations, you're a doctor.

If you're okay with mind-numbing work, and you're good at math, congratulations, you're an accountant.

If you're okay with mind-numbing work, and you're not good at math or chem, congratulations, you're an lawyer.

They say lawyers can write and speak well...I've still not seen that proved.

2003-04-24 08:16:31 PM
Teachers still give take-home-tests?

2003-04-24 08:19:18 PM
S5030:

"Sucks when you only have 3 exams and one cumulative final that counts towards your grade for a semester."

Then you'd love law school. Four credit course, one three and a half hour exam is your entire grade for the semester.

Don't get the flu on exam day!

"If you're okay with mind-numbing work, and you're not good at math or chem, congratulations, you're an lawyer."

Most of my friends from college that decided to go to law school did so because they wanted to stay away from the real world for 3 more years, there undergrad provided few oppurtunities, or their MCAT scores didn't get them in Med school.

2003-04-24 08:22:48 PM
"I havent had any friends since i successfully lobbied to have the school day extended by 20 minutes!"

What a bunch of snichies..

2003-04-24 08:23:43 PM
Incidentally, I'm doing a take-home exam right now. Anybody know anything about instrumentation....

2003-04-24 08:24:10 PM
oppurtunities=opportunities

/sorry, I'm an accountantantant

"Most of my friends from college that decided to go to law school did so because they wanted to stay away from the real world for 3 more years..."

Jesus, that's an expensive way to avoid real life. And I worked a few years before law school...real life was better.

2003-04-24 08:25:11 PM
Did the article say how they cheated on this "take home" test? Did they hand it out the window for Elaine to take it?

/"George is getting upset!!"

2003-04-24 08:27:19 PM
I think the prof thought that the students would get more out of listening to the enron whistle blower than the test - and I agree.

2003-04-24 08:27:29 PM
Why didn't they just follow the professors guidelines and take the test individually? Classmate 1 does problem 1 on all the tests. Classmate 2 does problem 2 on all the tests...

2003-04-24 08:28:24 PM
This is why I don't giove take-home exams. Can't trust anybody these days.

/Cynical burned-out teacher

2003-04-24 08:28:31 PM
Millay,

I should have also said that I was generalizing based on a few of my fellow pledge brothers that were comfortably better off then I was at the time. I have no idea why real students go to law school.

2003-04-24 08:28:51 PM
Good thing it wasn't a class in business ethics.
