Seems very close to the actual storyline of the comics, except that Jane Foster was a nurse not a scientist.

It's Kenneth FARKING Branagh. Of course he's read the source material... probably all 400+ issues of it.

If I could pay anyone to do The Avengers movie - it's Branagh:

"Captain America's shield HAS TOO MANY FARKING STARS ON IT! REMAKE IT!"
"There are no repulsor ray ports on the bottom of Mr. Downey's boots - shooting is halted until suitable ones are found."
"Why in GOD'S NAME is Ultron wearing a Mysterio helmet?! This isn't right!"
"No, Hank! The FINGERS are used for the backhand, not the BACK OF THE HAND! Oh, and Janet, please try to feel propelled backwards instead of falling - it adds drama to the scene..."

Like all directors of Marvel's properties (if you didn't know) he had to take a Marvel Metaphysics Test - this is one of the actual questions on it:

Imagine Captain America and Thor are locked in a battle with no holds barred; Thor smashes Mjolnir down with all the force he can muster, and because of lack of time, Cap blocks. Who will be more injured?

A: Thor. Because of "pathos-du-triomphe" Captain America wins - Thor is angered and smashes the hammer down. Captain America *never* becomes angered in a fight due to extensive and rigorous training to save his mortal life - something Thor has never had to do. Captain America knows exactly at what angle to hold his shield to deflect the hammer right into Thor's face, knocking him out cold. All because of survival instinct and peak-human ability and training.

/If it's a "Battle Royale" for who wins in DC it's Batman. In Marvel it's Captain America. This is because, as any fiction writer will tell you, "Training and skill beats power and speed every day of the week."
//And both are only human. Absolutely perfect mental and physical paradigms, but still just human.

Sorry Hollywood, Thor can not be played by a pubescent faced actor. You casted really good for Stark and Benner, but really, don't drop the ball. He needs to look more godly, less grizzled.

\If they had cast him for Capt. America, then it would have been better

Hilariously enough, I used something similar to this to turn my friend into a Captain America fan.

Actually they sort of threw a few punches at each other and decided that Cap would probably win (super soldier serum makes him a Meta, not just human) it would take him a few hours to do it and they didn't have that kind of time.

/Avengers JLA crossover was complete crap, they hyped this confrontation and ended it in about a page.

It's funny how close that is to the comics. Subby needs to recheck his facts before going all WHARBL.

Dude, chill. :)

I wasn't saying it as a bad thing, or that Branagh was being an idiot. I, out of all people, love it when a movie stays faithful to the comic book source. I also understand that certain changes must be made to transfer the comics to film. I am applauding the fact that Branagh is being a tyrant with the Thor movie instead of changing it to star Vincent D'Onofrio with a paper-machete mallet and duck wings in a parking garage.

They also did it in Marvel vs. DC. Sort of crazy. They were put in a sewer and forced to fight, so you immediately assume Bats has the advantage. Cap doesn't have nearly the stealth skills that Bats does, so it was just him slogging through the sewers waiting for Batman to make another lightning attack before fading back into the shadows again. It went on for hours, supposedly...and I can't remember who won, and cursory internet search turns up nothing. Little help, here?

There's one line in that synopsis that sounds like a romantic comedy. The rest sounds like the story for Marvel's Thor, which is the whole point.

Don't all romantic dramedies involve the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth?

You apparently have never been in a relationship with a viking...

Nothing in that synopsis sounds bad to me.
A disgraced Viking god smashes LOTR style trolls and giants.
A cute chick is there to add romance motivation to the redemption motivation.

I do hope they keep the Stan Lee faux Shakespearean and just explain Thor learned english 400 years ago.
Because that would be amusing.

Sooo, looking forward to this. That synopsis sounded about right. The only thing I didn't like in there was Natalie Portman. Sounds like a good time to me though. Thor was always my favorite.

On a related note, anyone know where to pick up on the new Thor line? I've been wanting to get back into them and don't know where to start.

The only worthwhile place to start is the J. Michael Straczynski run. You can read the Thor Disassembled for a background, but it's totally unnecessary. JMS's Thor is very good.

wyrlss: JMS's Thor is very good.

Of course it is, because Thor was already a godlike creature of mythology, and he didn't need to retcon his origin to turn him into one, like he did with Spider-Man (totem animal my ass).

I will be miffed when everyone in the Asgard sounds like they're from the BBC, and not from the fjords.

Cap threw his shield, Bats threw a batarang, Cap missed and Bats hit.

Woo, action.

Are you pining for the fjords?

I never really was into most Spider-Man titles. 2099 was amusing for a while. But really, OMD or spider-totems don't bother me.

I can't imagine how this could be filmed and not look like the most ridiculous thing ever. All I thought about was Crocodile Dundee while reading that synopsis.

Does Thor at least have an alter ego or is he going to walk around the city with his helmet with the little wings on it all the time?

2010-03-10 11:07:28 AM
I can only hope that Subby is just talking about the casting, which will minorly restore some of my faith in humanity. Even then, I can see how Hemsworth can be done up to look the part quite well.

Thor's Hammer...etc....

Seems like pretty standard comic book movie stuff combined with the story of Thor.

If it's going to be good or not can't be determined from such a synopsis. The few things that typically kill a superhero movie (such as too-many-villains syndrome) aren't really addressed in the synopsis. Although I think it'll center around a single villain, so I doubt that particular thing will be an issue.

2010-03-10 12:15:17 PM
I think it's got a chance, Chris Hemsworth at least looks like he could play the part and I can definitely see Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Now if they want someone to play Sif, they should go with April Bowlby and have lots of extra scenes with her and Natalie on the dvd set.
/lots and lots of extra scenes.

I needed to check on my understanding of Thor (yes, I used Wikipedia, but it's not a research paper). In the mainline Marvel Comics, Odin decided that Thor needed to be taught humility, so he puts Thor in the body of Donald Blake, a partially disabled human. Donald Blake then discovers Thor's disgusied hammer, Mjolnir, and transforms into Thor. For some time, Donald Blake/Thor shared a double life with his alter-ego. It gets more complicated from there. As for how much of Thor's "origin" will make it into the movie, I have no idea. Apparently Donald Blake ended up in a void for some time though.

/ Comics are confusing.
