Between 100 million and a billion.

Reported without a winking smiley face...

I've seen exactly one killed by running into a window. I've seen the remains of at least a dozen caught and eaten by cats. Does this mean that cats kill twelve billion birds a year in North America?

Not that I have any reason to doubt those figures.

This will undoubtedly cost American taxpayers around Eleventy Billion Dollars a year as well.

I think Windows 7 would have lowered the dead bird count. I'm certain that after Windows Vista, the dead bird count escalated dramatically (as it did after the release of Windows ME). I believe Microsoft is doing all it can to prevent birds being killed by Windows.

More birds would be killed by Linux, but none of them will use it either.

Building I used to work in had windows that would kill entire flocks of birds at once. Bunch of times I'd be out having a smoke when out of nowhere you'd here a *swish*! SMACK! and three dead birds would drop at my feet startling the crap out of me and whoever was out there. Other times you'd come in monday and at first smoke break you'd see dead birds all along the sides of the building. I think the most I counted on one of those days before maintenance cleaned them up was about a dozen and a half, which is quite a few for a mass-window-kill.

2010-03-09 05:46:17 PM
It's not the operating system that's killing the birds - it's the computer screens. They think they can fly into another world.

The only birds that I've noticed hit the windows of my house were being chased by a hawk. I've seen that happen twice in the last year. The hawk flew by so close to the window that it couldn't extend its wing on the house side, but it appears that the little birds somehow kept going after striking the window and escaped. Poor hawk. Chasing them into the windows is clever.

So, about 2000 birds per minute are killed by glass?

Let's see, if the average weight of a bird is about 3.5oz then that's 218,750,000lbs of dead birds per year. Two hundred and eighteen MILLION pounds?

Somehow this seems unlikely, maybe it's just me.

2010-03-09 05:49:23 PM
I shutter at the thought of all those dead birds, but I find the number a little hard to swallow.

The real victim here are excited dogs and people not paying attention to where they're going.

How many more broken noses and snouts will there be before we decide to do something about this epidemic?

When birds ram into windows, do little humans spin around their heads?

2010-03-09 06:22:46 PM
If only someone would install blue screens in the windows, then there wouldn't be so many deaths.

2010-03-09 06:22:52 PM
It's not always easy and may involve some sacrifice of views out the window, but it's worth it in terms of reducing this deadly menace to birds. Here are several things you can do to deal with window collisions:

1. Move bird feeders, bird baths and perches to within 3 feet of your window - you'll see the birds better and they can't fly fast enough to get hurt.
2.Collisions are caused by birds trying to fly through glass or because they see reflections from the outside - so do what you can to break up or eliminate this by placing decals or strings on the outside of your windows, separated by no more than 4 inches vertically and 2 inches horizontally.
3.Use screens, films or other coverings on your windows that eliminate reflections - or use bird-safe glass.
4. If constructing new windows, consider angling them 20 to 40 degrees from vertical.
5.When installing new landscaping, consider placing trees, shrubs, water features, and other bird attractants well away from windows.

6. Consider shrugging and then letting natural selection take its course, windows aren't going anywhere anytime soon. It's not cool to allow human evolution these days but birds are free game.

Once I went to a new job in an brand-new office block downtown. In the lobby, there was a card proudly claiming an award for being a "bird friendly" building, so please turn out your office lights when done for the night, or else the migrating birds may get confused and crash into the building. That's nice" I thought...

Then, on my first coffee break, I looked out of the cafeteria window and saw these viscous-looking spikes on every ledge in the building.

They were there to stop the goddamn pigeons from roosting there and raining down crap on the cars and pedestrians below..

Bird Friendly? Well, not if the bird happens to be a pigeon!

Bill Gates has been spotted at the $3 bargain Crest Theater, for that matter.

You'd think he'd have his own.

At least 11ty trillion birds, give or take a gigillion.

In southern California, many (high end, hillside) houses have glass walls on the edges of their swimming pool areas. These are notorious for birds slamming in them.
