My gramps was on PT boats in the South Pacific. One night on shore, they realized some Japanese soldiers were camped on the other side of the island, a few hundred yards away. They were drinking and carrying on pretty loudly (PT crews usually operated in stealth mode 24/7). The PT decided to take a look to see if it was worth ambushing them or just quietly retreating from their camp.

One of the Japanese soldiers spotted them and grabbed a grenade--which, at the time, were the type that had to be smacked on a hard surface to activate--and smacked it on his own head, unaware that he was not wearing his helmet. Stunned, he and the grenade fell to the ground and self-neutralized the Japanese camp within 3 seconds.

Other than the one time he woke up to a man standing over him with a knife, he said it was the scariest thing he ever saw in the war.

Ihopethisnamewillfi: The first time I held and pulled the pin on a hand grenade was the most intense moment of my life. I ended up throwing it like a baseball instead of lobbing it and blew up the edge of the berm surrounding the grenade range.

Must be scary because you think, "If I accidentally misthrow this and hit something and it bounces back, I am F'd!!"
