Chile's strict building codes are coming out looking pretty good, in the same way that Haiti's total lack of any infrastructure whatsoever is looking pretty bad.

Except for that 15 story building that fell over like a cut down tree. I was amused by the reporter pointing at its remains and saying "this building was designed to be earthquake proof, yet it fell over!". Uhhh, Mr. Reporter, notice the building is still mostly intact, and the ground supporting it failed, not the building itself. Besides, no one designs for an 8.8 magnitude earthquake.

I don't think anyone inspects houses built with mud bricks, subby. Those are bricks made out of mud, dried in the sun. Earthquakes turn them into a fine powder. Turkish villagers DREAM of shoddily enforced building codes.

No, it will be a repeat the next time Turkey is hit with an earthquake. or is that a peat and repeat?

A house mud from dirt that's dried in the sun is a soddy way to build anything. I guess all you can do is dry, dry again.

I agree. Most of today's McMansions are garbage. People are buying $200,000 to $400,000 crap. They use the cheapest material as possable.

Can you imagine LA or San Francisco after an 8.8 quake? Or even St. Louis.

The problem is that they brined the cement used in construction, not the turkey.

Yes, just take 1906 (8.25 at most) and add a little more damage.

That's why we also have building inspectors. We had a 6.9 here in San Francisco not too long ago. Most of the damage was limited to buildings at the epicenter, and buildings that pre-dated strict building codes.

The Chewbacca Defense: Chinese building codes are unimpressed.

Interestingly, those buildings didn't pancake. I think I'd rather have my building fall over than crush me between floor sections.
