I was amused by the reporter pointing at its remains and saying "this building was designed to be earthquake proof, yet it fell over!". Uhhh, Mr. Reporter, notice the building is still mostly intact, and the ground supporting it failed, not the building itself. Besides, no one designs for an 8.8 magnitude earthquake.

That's why we also have building inspectors. We had a 6.9 here in San Francisco not too long ago. Most of the damage was limited to buildings at the epicenter, and buildings that pre-dated strict building codes.

Chinese building codes are unimpressed.
