You know. I have it on good authority -- maybe Hayek? -- that capitalist countries never go to war with other capitalists countries.

In other news, a very similar EU 'sky is falling' interest rate spread scenario happened in Italy in 2002-3. I was excited at the time because I was hoping they'd go back to the Lira before I travelled there.

/they got over it.
//so did I

I think the Germans just need to describe their struggle to the Greeks. Provide a description of how unfairly Germany is being treated, identify the guilty parties and maybe give a road map of possible corrective action.

I was in Germany shortly after reunification. The West Germans didn't even want to help their own countrymen. I visited a large chicken farm (over 1,000,000 chickens) in Magdeberg that hadn't seen cash money in over four years. In case you didn't know, Germans are ruthless.

Didn't Greece recently host some olympic event or something that was supposed to made them a shiatton of money?

It could be called "My Struggle" or "Our Stuggle". One of those names would work for sure.

What the hell are you talking about? If Germany doesn't feel like bailing out Greece, why should they have to? Especially when Greece is doing nothing to solve their own problems.

2010-03-09 11:16:50 AM
The Germans are fed up with paying the bills of everybody in Europe

Since when do the Germans get to decide when they've paid enough reparations. STFU & GBTW!

This may be doable, if with wasn't for the greedy paper shufflers of Wall Street not being able to profit much from it.

It's not just Greece; take a look at Latvia, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Italy and Portugal. All of them took advantage of the free wheeling 90's and 00's (or were taken advantage of by the bankers), and now that the global economy has contracted they are the first countries to realize the real trouble they are in.

Notice I said "the first"; right behind them are Japan, England, and yes, the US. It may take us longer to get to the level these other countries are currently, but unless something dramatic happens to the economy in the next 3-5 years we'll be there too.

Perhaps European war which results in US intervention might just be what
the economist prescribes to get things rolling anew?

Origin of the kebap is Turkey, not Greece. Which brings up the subject of Turkey, which wants to get into the EU. Turkey would be a greater deadweight than Greece, so I'd be surprised if they were let in anytime soon.

2010-03-09 11:28:38 AM
I don't think we will run into trouble if the Greeks stop selling kebabs here as long as the Turks stay
