EZ Writer: free money from the Government

Most workers pay into an unemployment insurance fund out of their paycheks. Its not free government money.

You work at the cheeto factory? That's the point, keep them spending. Because they do no one any good without a house, a job, or money in mom's basement.

Anyone who thinks the miserly amount of unemployment benefits available in the US discourages people from going out and trying to find a job has either never been on unemployment or is really really clueless.

I predict a civil discussion based on the merits and detractors of social engineering and the impacts of unemployment as both a life line and a crutch will occur in this thread.

I'm crossing my fingers. I can't afford my COBRA to go up.

I'm watching this vote very closely, and anyone that votes against it is getting a scathing letter from me - regardless of what State they represent. And if any of my representatives vote against it, they don't get my vote.

Nope. No proof that you used government issued money (which, by the way, is yours ANYWAY since there's that whole withholding tax thing that goes into unemployment programs).

Let them have their pittance, it's not like these folks are lifelong welfare scumbags. I'd way rather the money be spent on the temporarily jobless than the perpetual drains on society that soak up welfare and pop out dozens of heathen children.

Unless you pay in more than you get back from the government, you should not have the right to vote. Right to vote should be earned.

Thank God there are people who think like TsukasaK to serve me my burgers. Without that kind of illogical bullshiat, there would be a significant defecit in the fast food industry staffing numbers, I think.

And while using the word "derisive" is impressive at any social gathering, using it while failing to grasp the magnitude of your own fail is both pseudo-intellectual and desperate.

People on unemployment do not necessarily "sit on their ass and do nothing". You're an "IT Professional". That's YOUR job.

I'm unemployed and it's actually kind of nice. If they pass the bill with a year-long extension of benefits I won't be looking too hard for a job until the summer is over. Let's see. I could put my son in day-long summer care and work all summer if I can find a job or I can look for a job in the fall and spend all summer with my kid. Hmmmm....tough call.

Depends if you think the economy will shed jobs indefinitely.

Hey, Subby, you can go ahead and fark yourself.

This place is hurting right now, and for the most part it's hard working folks who's jobs have just up and disappeared. Blame NAFTA, Clinton, Bush, or whomever, but the last couple decades has been rough and this recent economic crisis has had no worse victims than the stat of Michigan. As they say, when the nation's economy gets the sniffles, Michigan's catches ebola.

People need help, unless you fancy twenty percent of the population of one state losing their homes and joining Detroit in the economic rot.

And that's just Michigan. People everywhere are hurting. People that did nothing to deserve what has happened, have paid into the system their entire lives, and have just had the misfortune of working for companies that would fire them all if it meant their stock price goes up a quarter point.

This is a moral imperative, as well as an economic one. If we don't help these folks keep their heads above water, it just makes the entire economic situation worse for everyone. You have to give these people more than bootstraps to help them.

It is depending on where you are. I'm currently employed but in this bumpkin town I would be hard pressed to get another job if this one dried up. A national job search can be a long and arduous affair, and people need to live while they conduct it. 99 weeks seems a bit steep, though.

The people getting this were people who had jobs to start with. Unenjoyment benefits pay out something like $15k for a whole year, and that's even if you have your GED in law or rocket surgery. In a normal economy, these people would already be hired and nobody would care.

Tax Boy: Anyone who thinks the miserly amount of unemployment benefits available in the US discourages people from going out and trying to find a job has either never been on unemployment or is really really clueless.

It does. Not everyone, but a decent portion of them. Luckily (and hopefully), they tend to be younger people who don't have families to support. I've known several people who had the attitude "well, I have unemployment for a while, so I'm just going to take a break for a few months". One branch of my extended family is a master of strategic bankruptcies and gaming unemployment and other benefits. Of course, they also take every opportunity to biatch about others who receive benefits ("damn wetbacks taking all of our money and jobs and filling up our schools", etc.).
