i'm guessing the gun was illegally obtained or something, right? probably didn't have a license for it, serial numbers scraped off?

i can only imagine that being the case if he was sentenced to a year AND being a celebrity... i mean Lindsey Lohan has done worse than that and she spent what...24 hours in jail?

Yeah, I guess he got in with some feds trying to buy a dirty gun (unlicensed) and they busted him before he could even get the gun(s). I think there may have been a few.
Or that was another rapper.

Butterflew: i'm guessing the gun was illegally obtained or something, right? probably didn't have a license for it, serial numbers scraped off?

If I remember correctly, it's illegal to be in possession of a gun AT ALL in NYC. 1 year, mandatory. Doesn't matter who you are.

Of course, someone could've just been feeding me a cock-and-bull story, but that's the story I heard some 20 years ago. From a gun nut. So take it as you will. :-/

This is one away mission I never heard of.

/Sure beats Rikers.

So he will spend a year in protective custody for a non-violent crime.

But the story will read: "A year at Rikers, OMG Thug!". The man is dedicated to his career, I'll give him that.

They found the gun on the tour bus and several people tried to say it was their gun other than Lil' Wayne. But they found skin cells that matched Lil' Wayne, so they chose to go after him. Plus I think the gun was registered to someone else on the bus, but in NYC that doesn't matter.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's do not be in possession of a gun in NY without the correct permits, etc.

First Plaxico and now this guy. NY doesn't give a shiat who you are.

What's interesting is that Donte Stallworth KILLED a person while drunk driving, and served less time in prison than Plaxico, who only shot HIMSELF.

So to recap: Possession of a gun in NY - 2 years prison. Drunken Manslaughter in I think Louisiana - 8 months or so.

Wasnt there also a ridiculous amount of drugs on the bus? From what I remember, they were on the tour bus. And cops just came on the bus, and Wayne was holding a black bag. He threw the bag across the bus when he saw the cops and obviously, in the bag was a handgun and lots o drugs. Frankly, the guy did something wrong. Why the drugs were left out of the case, and they focused on the gun I dont know. I actually heard that Wayne is not a big fan of guns, because he shot himself when he was really young. But who knows. I suppose its not fair to just let people off the hook, but it this case, they wanted HIM. They didnt really seem to care about what was truth or not, they wnated him. Whether he was the actual culprit or not didnt seem to matter.

You can legally have a weapon while driving through NYC, but it has to be according to the Firearm Owners Protection Act.

Link (new window)

I'm waiting for SCOTUS to tell Chicago and NYC how unconstitutional handgun bans/limitations are. In NYC you can only buy one handgun every 90 days. Like that ever stopped any crime.

Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, pleaded guilty in October to felony gun charges involving a semiautomatic pistol found on his tour bus in 2007.

I will.

Rapper Lil Wayne has been sentenced to a year in prison after pleading guilty to gun possession.

IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE A GUN

Granted, there are probably some other circumstances in play. I don't have the attention span to read past the first paragraph of TFA. Still...I get tired of seeing "ZOMG he had a f'n GUN!!1!" articles in the media.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Shockingly, the 9/11 hijackers used no firearms whatsoever.

Actually, I would defend him. I don't know the details, but if he hasn't committed an actual crime with the gun there should be no charge. I think licensing is bullshiat (though I went through the process myself).

According to Progressive Auto Insurance, had I killed a person with my vehicle (Vehicular manslaughter), my insurance would have been lower than getting a Reckless ticket for racing.

I think the law (and in turn, insurance companies) looks at gun possession as something people might repeat doing - therefor stiffer penalties apply. Driving while drunk and killing someone is something people never do more than once.

I'll defend him: NYC's gun laws are draconian. If he wasn't threatening anyone or misusing it in any way (other than possessing it, of course), what is the harm?

Having said that, he also faces felony drug and gun charges in Arizona. A conviction on those charges would make him federally ineligible to own a firearm.

Fuggin Bizzy: IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE A GUN

In NYC it is close to being illegal. Handguns must be registered. In NYC, even getting the permit to obtain a pistol is hard. Also, it is damn near impossible to obtain a permit to carry unless you are famous or work in security.

I think Lil Wayne's problem, correct me if I am wrong, is that he didn't have a permit to possess a firearm. Being a non-resident, that is an impossibility, but the law is the law no matter how screwed up it is.

Regardless of his skin pigmentation (and New York's asinine gun laws), he's a felon. Even most pro-gun rights folks will allow for felons to be disarmed.

I think the harm is that if you're not responsible to understand and abide by the laws put forth to carry a handgun, you're probably not responsible enough to own a handgun in the first place.
