The ending to #5 was HILARIOUS and quite fitting.

/Bad News Bears should have been #1

That's a rule of life worth writing down.

Re: Friday Night Lights (spoiler below)...

A fantastic film, and I was jaw-droppingly stunned at the ending. It defied my expectations of sports movies where the underdog finds some miraculous way to prevail and the audience goes home happy. (See: Hoosiers. Actually, don't see Hoosiers, it's predictable and formulaic.) I realize it was based on a(n altered) true story, but I still thought that took some balls.

Boobie Miles' breakdown was one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen. And Tim McGraw can actually act, wtf. Nice work.

Is Kingpin funny? Should I watch it?

2010-03-09 07:49:24 AM
I like Tin Cup.. What?
Painful at the end - makes me a little sad - but I liked it.

They criticize Rocky for having the decision read in the background. That's the whole point.. it doesn't matter if he won or lost, he just wanted to go toe-to-toe with the champ and be still standing at the end of the fight.

It's amazing how many people don't even remember that he lost the fight.

2010-03-09 07:51:05 AM
I love the fact that they included North Dallas Forty on the list. Whenever I mention this film, no one under the age of forty seems to have ever seen it (I'm in my twenties). It really is a shame, as it's funny and paints a brutally realistic picture of the meat market-style business culture of professional sports teams that still hits very close to home thirty years after it's release.

"All you really need to know..."??? Really???!?

I guess all y'all really need to know about me is that I've never watched a movie about golf.

Through the whole movie, he repeats the line "I just wanna go the distance" several times. Amazing to me that people miss that also.

The problem with "Tin Cup" is

1. It's a golf movie

2. Because that's not bad enough-it's a golf movie with Kevin Costner as the star.

2010-03-09 08:02:45 AM
Replace "Bring It On" with "Mystery, Alaska", and you'll really have something. The players weren't even paid, they just loved the game.

Little Big League.

Twins fight their way into a one-game playoff with Seattle.

Bottom of the 9th. Down by 1 run. One on. Two out. The kid manager's father-figure steps to the plate. Smashes a hit to deep left center! It's going... going... going...

Robbed by Griffey, making a leaping catch over the wall to win the game.

Where's your hat?

/love that moment

Friday Night Lights was a terrific movie. And Explosions in the Sky did the soundtrack as an added bonus.

Bad News Bears was farking awesome!!!

No Happy Gilmore?

hmmmm #5 is golf... nope. all you need to know about me you can learn from knowing i refuse to watch and golf movie that's not Happy Gilmore.

The only thing more boring than watching golf is watching a movie about golf.

//Unless if it has Dorf in it.

Strik3r: Through the whole movie, he repeats the line "I just wanna go the distance" several times. Amazing to me that people miss that also.

It's the ultimate "It's not if you win or lose, it's how you play the game" movie. It's also what really sets it apart from the rest of the franchise until the most recent Rocky Balboa.

2010-03-09 08:16:04 AM
The end of Tin Cup was amusing & a little refreshing.

Throwing the whole tournament just so he could try & try & try to make a nearly impossible shot proves that some people believe there are things better than fortune & glory.

/just don't tell Indiana Jones that.

2010-03-09 08:16:40 AM
Tin Cup is Caddyshack without the jokes.

North Dallas Forty is really good.

2010-03-09 08:22:06 AM
'Bring it On' at #4!? Holy fark.

I print that page out just so I could wipe my ass with the list.

2010-03-09 08:23:30 AM
I somehow fail to believe that for the 99% of the people on the planet who have never seen the #5 movie, there is nothing more that needs to be known about them besides this.

Mighty ducks, mighty ducks, mighty ducks. Quack quack quack mr. Ducksworth

I think my favorite on the list is Friday Night Lights, it's not the best movie, but it definitely hit home. However in reality losing is not that fun.

I loved Tin Cup. It's one of those movies you watch, and realize you're grinning from ear to ear all the way through it.

And the soundtrack is kickass.

Happy wins at the end, thus cannot count.

I agree, "Mystery, Alaska" was a way better "underdogs don't win" movie than "Bring It On".

Nailed it. I'm not saying that having an opinion on Tin Cup makes you a bad person, I'm just saying it means you watched a Kevin Costner movie about golf and are not ashamed of it enough to keep it a secret.

Wow. Tin Cup hate. I guess I shouldnt be surprised at that movie snobbery on here. I enjoyed that movie. Then again, I also enjoy movies like 2012 and Independence day, so I guess it fits.
Kevin Costner is a decent actor, this isnt waterworld folks.

Spoiler Alert: They won.

If the National Spelling Bee on ESPN then qualifies it as a "sport", then "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" deserves Honorable Mention.

And yeah, "Bad News Bears" deserves #1.

Best part for me is listening to the cars driving by the field in the background after the pitcher gets pushed down and yelled at. All this drama about winning, and there are people nearby who don't know and don't give a shiat about it.

You do understand that the ending of Hoosiers was the only part that was actually based on the true story? It was predictable because it actually farking happened.

For some reason I thought #5 was going to be Million Dollar Baby.

Tin Cup was good and I agree that you can learn a lot about a person based on their reaction to the end of the movie

The author didnt seem to criticize it so much as point it out, and since the whole article is about sports movies where the protagonist loses the big game at the end but is still a winner id say they got the point

Mystery Alaska should have made that list if for no other reason than to remove a movie about cheerleaders.

Tin Cup = awesome, awesome movie.

The ending was entirely fitting. "Enjoy second place, David" or something like that.

I think, though, that by being the unnanounced winner of the US Open, Peter Jacobsen's real major chances were jinxed.

Actually, I had never seen the end of that movie until I looked at the clip in the article. It's one of those movies you see on the TeeVee and stop for some Cheech Marin and leave because Costner's awesome acting abilities start overwhelming the senses.

My recollection is that Rocky doesn't talk about just going the distance until the very end of the movie. The night before the fight is when he realizes that he can't win. That threw me the first time I saw the movie. The whole time he wants to win, and then at the last second he changes his goal to just survive.
