I knew there was a reason I always picture Eric Cartman when I read posts from Fark Conservatives.

Churchill2004: Setting aside the lack of efficacy, this sort of nonsense is a perfect example of how you can't declare health care a "public good" without also intruding on people's personal lifestyle choices. Even if the "we're paying for them!" argument is false, as it is with the obese since they actually cost less by dying sooner, it's a frighteningly compelling argument for creeping regulation of formerly private decisions.

I don't know if that is necessarily true. Can anybody more knowledgeable than myself tell me if this is true in countries with universal healthcare?

Do you want just his own spending, or should we also include the things that were finally accounted for in the real budget ?

let's go with the latter. If we are portraying either party as fiscally responsible it would be dishonest to not mention a planned budget deficit that is approximately 10% of GDP. 2009 should be included too, but that would reinforce the original point as that was Bush's last budget.

/Of course, it would be unfair to blame it all on Obama as the economic shiat has hit the fan.

Taxes are to raise money, not deceptively goad people into not doing things. Besides. they should have learned from cigarette smokers, they can tax the shiat out of those people, and it doesn't cut anything down.

Why can't we tax the hell out of soda, alcohol, cigarettes and junk food, so much so that it pays for universal health care? I'd also include special taxes for speeders and gun owners.

/Just curious

How would you have a special tax for speeders? Couldn't you accomplish the same thing by increasing the amount people pay for speeding tickets?

Does someone really need to post the projected budget and deficit figures of the current administration?

No matter whether they have a (D) or (R) after their name, we all lose with higher taxes and unsustainable budgets. If only there was a way we could say no...

Britney Spear's Speculum: HFCS/sugar are in everything. It's funny to see those corn refiners PSAs because they say 'it's fine in moderation.' That may be, but how do you have moderation in every single piece of farking food.

Really? I doubt I've consumed any HFCS in the last week without even trying.

Adding a tax on pizza is assinine: for many poorer people, that's about the healthiest food they can get a hold of. And don't forget that decent meat and veggies are almost completely absent from poor neighborhoods: Detroit for example does not have even one chain supermarket in its borders. So really this'll be little more than a highly regressive tax.

On the other hand though, it is somewhat amusing to see all the fat people who wanted to tax smokers up the wazoo start to sweat.

Really? I thought the fact that taxes can create (dis)incentives and thus influence behavior was fairly obvious and its explicit use to do so common. Is it okay to give tax incentives for having kids to goad people into perpetuating the species? No opinion on this particular instance of proposed taxation but your cigarette counter-example just proves how damn addictive nicotine is, imo.

Anyone who didn't see this coming hasn't been watching cigarettes the past few years. We've taxed the S**t out of tobacco to fund all sorts of wonderful things to the point that revenues are dropping to pay for all of our feel good programs. New money must come from somewhere to replace the money lost to people who had the gall to quit smoking. My money has always been on fast food since the beer/wine/liquor industry has a much stronger lobby. Either way, after the sweet success of getting gobs of cash from evil smokers, we will find a way of getting rich off of everything we can turn into a moral sin.

First, they came for the tobacco, but I said nothing because I did not smoke...

Here's an idea, instead of taxing foods made from heavily subsidized farm industries, why not just stop subsidizing the farm industries?

Tax on pop? just stop subsidizing corn growers. (high fructose corn syrup)

Tax on fatty meat? stop subsidizing feed lots. (range grown beef can't produce that level of fat)

Isn't this sort of thing obvious? Or do politicians lose all ability at critical thought when they're elected?

I just prefer to put it this way. Conservatives cut taxes and increase spending while liberals increase taxes and increase spending. Which one is more fiscally responsible?

I'll never take any fiscal conservative seriously if they don't cut back military spending (nearly 1/4 of the federal budget and the largest discretionary item).

Instead of taxing soda and pizza - why don't we just charge fatties more for food?

I don't care what food you are eating - you can eat enough to be obese. It's not even that hard to do. So, instead of taxing soda (fatty will just eat some Snicker's bars....) let's tax fat people.

We'll install scales at every supermarket and when it's time to check out - you'll step on the scale. If you are skinny - you get 0% fat tax added. For each BMI point after 30 - you bill goes up 5%.

A fatty at a BMI of 40 who has $100 dollars on food - could only afford 1/2 as much food! That will create a caloric deficit and the fatty will lose weight!

//Still raging.

MrThingy: We've taxed the S**t out of tobacco to fund all sorts of wonderful things to the point that revenues are dropping to pay for all of our feel good programs.

Which is precisely why these sorts of taxes are a bad idea. If you tax something you do more than create a disincentive for people to buy it - you create an incentive for the government to make you buy more of it or find something else to tax.

Genevieve Marie: I work for a company that makes healthy pizza so I'm getting a kick out of this, etc.

There's no such thing as unhealthy pizza. Only unhealthy amounts of pizza.
