I met Sir Stirling a few years ago. It's rare you get to meet one of your heroes. Man is just one of the best race care drivers ever.

That fall would've killed us mere mortals. Get well soon.

Sad. He was a hero in my youth.

Someone needs to watch that guy and see if he carries a sword in his raincoat or something. Because he's damn sure not mortal, surviving a drop like that.

Among his injuries were two broken ankles, four broken bones in his feet and four chipped vertebrae.

Um, ow.

Useless Knowledge: Moss turned down Carroll Shelby's offer of being a backup driver (effectively an honorary position) in the Ford GT40 - the only vehicle in F1 history to take 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Le Mans. It would've been Moss' only F1 GP victory had he joined (not to be confused with the podium finishes - F1/GP is different from F1/WC).

I quote: "Sterling Moss is possibly the most frightening sonofabiatch behind the wheel. He treats brakes like one-dime whores, only uses them when absolutely farking necessary." ~Carroll Shelby

wat

There is no "F1" at Le Mans. Formula One cars are open-wheeled single-seaters. Le Mans racers are sports cars - enclosed-wheel, typically at least based on two-seaters, very different cars, and completely different racing series. Le Mans was part of the World Sportscar Championship at the time.

The Ford GT40 was usually classified as either a Group 4 Sports or Group 6 Prototype sports car, depending mainly on engine size and the particular rules in a given year.

Moss himself won several non-championship F1 races. He also won a great many world sports car championship races. Never Le Mans, though, so it would have been his only Le Mans victory.

I can't even find a citation for any of what you've said - Moss retired from racing after a horrible accident at Goodwood in 1962, and the GT40 didn't come along until 1966.

Moss has an authorized biography.. I highly recommend it. Guy is one serious badass. His life reads like an adventure novel.Link

Did Charlie Whiting issue Moss a drive-through penalty for cutting some corners in during that speed record?

/Seriously though, I'm glad to see he'll recover and will hopefully be driving again relatively soon.

He is a real life hero. To have survived and thrived in that age of motor racing where the grim reaper was waiting around every corner is amazing. I hope he is better soon!

BTW LeMans ftw. Best race cars in the world.

My favorite Stirling Moss memory was when he was racing at the Monterey Historics a few years back and decided to divebomb the entire field going into the Andretti hairpin, and t-boning a Scarab as a result.

After that, he was only there to race significant Mercedes race cars on parade laps. I don't blame the Sir Stirling Moss though, since European historic racing is to US vintage racing what hardcore porn is to a Shannon Tweed Cinemax flick.

Get well soon, Mr. Moss.
