Lens CRAFTers? More like Lens COVENers, amiright?

But without the Guinness towel, you can't really clean the glasses, can you?

But staff said her headaches and feelings of sickness were a normal reaction and would pass.

Umm... no, those symptoms are not a normal reaction to properly fitted lenses. If the "staff" really said that, why the fark are they working there? Every time I've get checked out for glasses or contacts, my optometrist asks if I've had a lot of headaches or nausea.

To be fair, it's pretty unreasonable to expect a high level of precision from a store that is next door to Hot Topic at the mall. She should be happy that her lenses were actually transparent.

I've had people come in with switched lenses before. I've even had people come in wearing completely incorrect prescriptions (other people's glasses, switched orders, etc). Most of the time patients can tell if something's wrong... in demented patients or children, it can be a problem. Shops should routinely recheck the prescription and the specs before dispensing, should check fit, and give instructions for follow-up if there is a problem.

My criticism of an article like this is that there isn't enough detail. Was there a large refractive difference between the eyes? Incorrect astigmatic correction / axis? Is the girl amblyopic? Are her symptoms really related to the glasses? Why the hell did the parents wait 2 years? Why didn't they seek a second opinion from another optometrist or ophthalmologist? And finally...

Can I somehow blame Obama and socialized medicine, this being England and all?

2010-03-08 02:15:24 PM
I had a problem with my new eyeglasses, and it was my ophthalmologist that screwed up. Their in-mall eye doctor did a better job correcting my vision than an MD. So not all Lenscrafters are created equal.

Girl Nauseous for Two Years Due to Wrong Glasses

She was "causing or able to cause nausea" for two years? Wow, those must have been some ugly-ass glasses. Why did no one who was nauseated by these nauseous glasses do something sooner?

so if there are no ill effects and it was a genuine mistake why is it astenine?

You americans are too used to being awarded $1 million for burning yourself with your own hot coffee.

The stupid lawsuit culture is only destroying the economy of america as it is a non-productive industry.

All lawsuit payments are covered by insurance companies, insurance companies charge higher premiums to cover payouts, companies paying premiums work this into expenses and charge accordingly higher prices to consumers, consumers pay higher prices to ultimately cover payouts.

The lawyers profit, insurance companies profit, even the companies with the insurance can profit and the only people who end up paying are the american public. and they are paying for nothing. nothing is produced for anyone.

who gets a 5-year-old glasses? and after the glasses are fixed the girl says things aren't blurry anymore, but she never said things were blurry the two years she was wearing the glasses and getting nauseous? Blame is on the idiot parents. Can a 5-year-old even accurately communicate the quality of their vision?

Many years ago, I briefly managed a dispensary that was a nationwide chain. They took any redo's out of the staffs commissions and the manager's bonuses. Bullshiat.
The mother should have been more attentive and the staff should have their license revoked.

I got my first pair at 4. You should get glasses when you need them. Lots of kids are held back from not being able to read things at a distance, especially in school.

I don't like eye doctors...

Last pair I got, I tried them on, and the right eye was horribly out of focus. When I told the doctor, he told me they were right, I just needed to adjust to them. I told him I could see better out of my old pair, he just told me I'd taken the vision test wrong and that I'd have to do it again. So I come back the week later and surprise, surprise they'd found the problem: the receptionist draws her numbers all crooked-like, and they'd read my prescription wrong. >.>

/cool story, bro

The mistake is making the child read close work with a prescription for distance. This often compounds the problem.

Also, there are various tests available for children (or the hard-to-communicate) that make it easier to determine their visual abilities. Pediatric ophthalmologist is a specialty.

Some children are pre-disposed to having extremely poor eyesight. I used to work in an eyewear lab, and it broke my heart every time a prescription would come through the window for very young children. The youngest one I can remember was about a year old, and her lenses were approx +10.00 OU.

(That means that if you could focus on something that was 1 meter away, she could focus on it from 10cm (or about 4" away).

Mind you, I agree that the parents weren't the brightest crayons in the box for waiting 2 years before getting the girl's eyes checked again. The glasses should never have left the store without being checked, rechecked, triple-checked, and checked again when the customer came in to try them on. Not to mention the fact that it's generally pretty difficult to mount a lens in the wrong side of the frame without significantly messing up the shape of the frame (bending wire or heating plastic, depending).

/Yeah, I know... cool story, bro.
//I do miss getting free glasses though.
