festus: Please don't suck like most followup movies/sequels ... ... ..

I am worried about this film. It seems the writers/Favreau have gone the way most hero films do:

TOO. MANY. CHARACTERS.

First film we had Tony/Iron Man, Pepper, Rhodey, Stane. That was enough for the story right there.

Now we have Tony/Iron Man, Pepper, Rhodey/War Machine, Whiplash, Natalia Romanova/Natasha Romanov/Black Widow, Sam Rockwell's character, Stark Hunters, Gary Shandling (?), and more.

Too much going on unless the pacing is done right. I worry for this film...

Meh, I don't have an issue with too many characters, just like with movies that aren't superhero movies.

So long as they don't just chuck one in for a minute so fanboys can go OOOOOOO and then WHAAAAA they got that guy all wrong!

Comic book operas are chock-a-block full of characters that regularly interact. I think the Tick "live action" show fell down because they didn't have ENOUGH of the cartoon's characters in it.

I'm more worried about this following suit with Dark Knight, the 2nd Daniel Craig "Bond", and pretty much any sequel other than the precious few which are equal to, or even better than, the original.

Which was the problem facing X-Men 3: so many characters thrown in just for the sake of having them in there.

Even though it is a comic book movie, even though in regular movies as well, I like characters to have a meaning within the narrative of the film. Even more so in comic book movies; there is no reason to have Spidey stop by for an upside down chat with Matt Murdock or Tony Stark just because he can.

If they want him to swing by in the background because they are of the same universe? That is cool and well done.

I just always dread super hero sequels because of the tendency to go all X3, dragging down the story just to introduce a fan favorite from the comics for a throwaway scene so that they can make an action figure out of the character.

And they didn't even farking throw in Gambit with all that. In retrospect though I wish they would have left him out of that Wolverine movie too.

Oh, I still think Milla Jovovich was the perfect choice for Natalia Romanova/Black Widow. She can do the stunts, is Russian (Ukrainian, but during the USSR era is when she was born and grew up) and knows the language already, and she can act.

That is just me though....

Yep, but I think we're going to see lots more of these Marvel movies with heaps of characters, simply becaus of how both Iron Man and Hulk ended - with the Avengers Initiative tipped.

They could do it well.

Or they could make it a total cluster-f*ck.

Yeah but she's getting pretty long in the tooth.

And while I think she's still smoking hot, she hasn't got the curves or the cleavage to fit with the Marvel Girls With Massive Hooters mystique.

The Avengers movie calls for multiple characters though, which is the difference in that movie and all the rest.

Yes, it is cool to see other characters and the interplay of the universe, but X3 is still the standard bearer for how to fark it up royally.

Yes, X-Men also calls for a roster of mutants from the universe, but they had a solid team (Halle Berry being the exception as Storm, she just ruined that part in the movies) that could have carried through to the end of the trilogy. There is nothing wrong with a solid roster. Hell, the comics had a solid roster for, what, the first 30 years of the franchise? The original then the all-new, all-different roster with very few changes throughout the years.

(They had also set up the Phoenix Saga perfectly for a movie version then just royally screwed that, like Marvel did in retconning the whole story to making Jean Grey be in stasis under the water.)

If it lends to the overall narrative then bully, otherwise leave it alone. We still have Cap, Thor, and possibly another movie to come out before we get to The Avengers movie. We know Cap, Iron Man, Thor, and Nick Fury are going to be a part of the Avengers, and most likely the Hulk as well.

Depending upon how the Thor movie turns out, we might even see Loki bring the team together like he did in the comics. I wouldn't be surprised if we see flashbacks to the other movies where certain parts seemed innocuous at best, but are revealed to be the handiwork of Loki himself pushing these characters together.

/I know too much about comics...

spidermann: The Avengers movie calls for multiple characters though, which is the difference in that movie and all the rest.

Yep, but it seems they are going to take their sweet time getting that together to the point where they become The Avengers. Maybe a few more Iron Mans, Hulks, and then the individual Avengers finding their way to form a unit.

Which I don't have a problem with.

Gotta say I always found the inclusion of Thor as odd ... mutants, yes that's fine as a concept, but actual Gods?

And didn't Loki mess around with Reed Richards and the FF a bit too? Through that portal that the FF could access right in the Baxter Building HQ, that went into some other version of reality (memory's gone) ...

festus: Gotta say I always found the inclusion of Thor as odd ... mutants, yes that's fine as a concept, but actual Gods?

The Loki thing is interesting...and this is going from memory here (SPOILERS):

In the X series (Earth, Universe, Paradise) we learn that Earth was a breeding ground for Celestials (as were all planets). The mutants, superheroes and villains were all a part of the defense system for the baby celestial. The powers and mutations made it so that the baby would survive attacks from other civilizations.

The Asgardians were nothing more then the daydreams of a disabled man who grew up in pretty much cro-magnon times. Loki bringing the Avengers together was preordained by the Celestials, through the help of The Watcher, so that the baby Celestial would be even more protected from attacks that would become more serious over time.

In the actual (current) universe, Thor was not thought to have been an actual god but just a man who was overly powered. Some people still don't think he is a god, while others know he is. Even the Ultimate universe, which the Iron Man/Avengers movie universes seem to be drawing from (since Nick Fury is only black/Sam Jackson in that universe), people don't think he is a god but an overly powered being.

I hope it takes at least five more years. I would rather they take the time to get it right then rush it out and hit while the iron is hot (pun not intended).

What will be interesting to me is whether (SPOILERS) the Red Skull in the Cap movie is going to be Ultimate universe Skull or normal universe Skull.

Normal - Skull was the real badman behind the Third Reich and was around during WWII.

Ultimate - He is (MAJOR SPOILERS) Cap's son.

That can change the whole dynamic of the character of Cap himself, nevermind his dynamic with the rest of the Avengers team.

Gary Shandling is basically a cameo. Stark Hunters, they don't even have names, can you really classify them as characters? You know Iron Man 2 won't have the nearly 45 minute origin sequence, so that's got to buy you some time. You worry entirely too much. Take some pills.

Don't get me wrong I liked TDK, but I also agree with festus.

Spiderman > Iron Man > Batman Begins > TDK > Spiderman 2 > XMen1 & 2 > Tim Burton's Batman > Hulk

And I just pretend Spiderman 3 and the other Batmans didn't happen.

That's fair, but bberg has a serious point. When a good superhero movie comes out, there's a evidence that the sequel is going to tear down the house, as well. Apparently, somewhere, someone people know what they are doing.

I did like the inclusion of a fully-restored New York State Pavilion from the '64-65 Worlds Fair at the opening there.

Considering the real NYSP is a rusting mess, that was pretty nice.

I thought they were too different to compare. I thought Begins was about the best superhero origin movie ever. I thought DK was just awesome as far as expanding everything.

For what each movie was trying to achieve, I thought each one was the best of the genre.

As a side note, I will always say that one of the best things DK did was NOT having the Joker's back story.
