Zmog

nice one.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch translates as
as "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave". Apparently the name was mcuh shorter but the locals added quite a bit.

Apparently the name was mcuh shorter but the locals added quite a bit.

Yes, they also originally tried to add "llan-y-ruillith-och-ycherygyrdl-wynerlldno" which translates to "stab the English scum in the neck with rusty knives and bury them in your compost heap" but the Tourist Board intervened.

Obligatory welsh joke:

Dai, who had just turned 20, one day informed his father that he wanted to marry Mari the girl next door.

"I'm sorry, boyo," said his father, "but you can't marry her, you see as it happens she's your sister."

Dai was downcast but within a week he came back to see his father again.

"Dad", he said, "I've made up my mind to marry Morfydd."

"Isn't that the girl behind the counter in Morgan's dairy?" asked his father . . . and it turned out she was his sister too.

Gradually one after another the girls of the village were excluded from matrimonial alliance with Dai on the grounds of consanguinity until none was left.

One evening after the last girl had fallen under his father's interdict Dai was sitting in the front room looking sadly at the grate.

"What's wrong with you, Dai?" asked his mother, "girl trouble is it?"

"Yes, Mam," Dai replied, "every time I want to marry a girl, father makes out she's my sister."

"Oh, don't listen to that old fool", said his mother, "he's no relation of yours anyway."

Question to the Welsh:

How can you be so fiercely patriotic when your country is irredeemably crap?

Signed,

English scum.

Look, you,

I like the Welsh. They satisfy my home-sickness for Newfoundlanders.

I love wales... Spent three days there, and it wasn't nearly enough.

2003-04-23 11:53:42 AM
I'm Welsh. I'm not at all patriotic, although our football team is quite good nowadays... of which I'm quite proud!

Best thing ever to come out of Wales:

Yup.

Do all the Welsh guys look like Ioan Guffudd?

and I like the accent, too.

I'm not surprised.

The advertising executive was American - and he understandably thought that both were areas of London

2003-04-23 01:29:42 PM
One of the ads is outside the Meadowbank sports stadium which is on a main commuter route into Scotland's capital

The really funny thing is that Meadowbank Stadium is where they take all the ballot boxes from Edinburgh and Lothians to count the votes. Ha, ha!

Valiantly trying to bring the thread back in line

Where is the English FA cup final played?
Where is the Worthington cup final played?
Where are the Nationwide playoffs played?

Which nation, on deciding they want a new stadium, got right down, designed it and built it.

Which nation, on deciding they want a stadium, argued about it, spent loads on it, and are still undecided.

Who started tuition fees?
Who's assembly decided to abolish them?

We are way ahead.

(except I live in England, because you get paid more)

Scottish men are incredibly sexy.

Just had to share that observation/fetish...

2003-04-23 10:17:47 PM
I have been SO flyered and inundated with emails over the university network encouraging me to vote in the national assembly elections, as well as the tv and radio spots. Problem is, I along with probably 80-90% of the places intake, are not eligible to cast a vote as we we'rent bloody well born in wales (and the ~15% left dont give a crap)_. Talk about duhhhhh. My details are on their files, can't they see it says PoB england :)

raa

The TV ads are pure irony in a 30 second blipvert though. "By not voting.. i'm making a statement.. I'm stating that, I don't care about (x,y,z.. like "my childs education").."
Yeah. Damn straight, dickheads. Actually I prefer to think, I'm making the statement that I know voting on it is a damn waste of time because it won't make any difference to my (putative) child's schooling. Not a one of the candidates is saying anything different, that i've seen.. not seen any as they havent exactly publicised the parties, merely the voting aspect. But, (izzard mode) as if there's going to be one shouting "yes! schools are our future! more schools", and then the guy opposite will be saying "oh no, no, we dont need them, school is evil! down with school!". -sigh-

It all gets overruled by westminster still so whats the point.
[goes back home like the more thugtastic welsh people suggest, and suggests that england secede from the union]

sorry. its late and im bitter. but i've had that feeling ever since the first TV ad

Ninjafish

Well bloody hell if the assembly has abolished tuition, why am i still paying it at a welsh uni?

Because the country and anyone who feels strongly enough about it to run for a separate parliament is so fiercely overpatriotic, isolationist, and somewhat xenophobic that any good stuff they can get will belong only to anyone who can prove they're 100% welsh blood and soil. FFS. Even my grandad was born and raised in merthyr (and possibly a good number other relatives) and I came here by choice, love the place. Can those of us who also support wales but happen not to have the birthright catch a break? Can we hell. No wonder there's bad feeling.
I can believe that thing about Llanfair PG :) It's so dumb to hold grudges past the third or fourth generation, when anyone still alive wasn't even born when the bad stuff went down.

(goes off to leech cash from born and bred, non fee paying welsh mate)

As ever, nothing against the people, but the admin could do with a bit of a kick.
