That does not look like fun, it looks like torture.
/pur kitty

These have been around for awhile now. They're horrible contraptions and completely unnecessary.

2010-03-03 02:36:17 PM
Kitty will go in once, but he won't go in twice. Just try it.

Where do you get the armored gauntlets to pick up said cat after the wash is through?

Our large male would f you up.

So that video has been around for a while, and yeah, it looks like cruelty at first glance. But...

My girlfriend's cat, who is normally so laid-back, trusting and fearless it's downright bizarre, is not a fan of water. He is, however, a fan of hanging out under cars, so if he goes too long without bathing himself, he gets it done for him. He doesn't like it, but it has to be done. As he tends to flail and thrash about and he's not declawed, as a matter of self-preservation we've taken to slipping a couple harnesses around his front and back halves and using the detachable showerhead to wash him down. He still pitches a fit, but can't reach anything to sink his claws into.

Point is, if anyone were to watch a video of us doing this, I'm sure it would also look like torture. And it's obviously not his favorite thing in the world. But it's necessary, and though he glares at us for a while afterward, once he's dry he's over it.

The machine in the video seems impersonal and probably has some uncomfortable connotations to go along with it, but ultimately if it comes down to the cat needing a bath and there's really no way for him NOT to be traumatized by it, then I don't know how much worse it really is than having it done by hand.

Locally some of the spray-n-wash places have doggie bath stations. Complete with different settings and the ubiquitous beep that annoys the hell out of you when it's down to the last quarter. Wish the hell I would have thought of that.

Oh sure, everyone thinks it's funny and harmlessly weird when the Japanese do it, but was that the reaction from the county sheriff at my "Doc MacGillicuddy's Automated Animal Cruel-o-tron 8000" booth at the fair? Nooooooo.

I feel bad, but that was almost exactly my first thought as well.

Link farked.

So, was it "Under tha SEEEEEEEEEEEEA" ? Or a different batch of cat-washing-machine hilarity?

I think the link is jacked already, but I don't even need to see it, the comments so far have provided all the entertainment I need. Especially Cagey B's.

Originally Gamera was this tiny turtle no bigger than the palm of your hand. Then a Japanese scientist invented a machine to clean turtles but tested it on Gamera first. 'Nuff said.

Kitties should be fluffed more often.

2010-03-03 07:25:27 PM
Oh, that was hilarious. But if I ever tried to put my male cat in that thing, I'd better sleep with one eye open for the rest of my life.

My cats are traumatized enough when I get in the tub with them (while wearing jeans and shoes for protection!) and bathe them. At least, though, I can exert something of a calming effect on them. I can also hold them out of the water while shampooing them. Yes, that machine does have an emergency stop button, but that cat is trapped in a box, being sprayed with water. That has to be a terrifying experience at the least.

OnmyojiOmn: Not funny at all. That cat terrified out of its mind and fighting for its life.

Yeah. I would break bones if anyone ever put my cats through something like that. Heck, even if it wasn't my kitty, I might get angry enough to hurt someone.

I'm not an insane PETA-like animal lover, but cruelty to animals is never cool. This is the feline equivalent of water boarding.

I know plenty of cats that have that reaction to water, machine or not. At least this way, less blood is spilled.
