That kid should have been around when Reagan fired all of the air traffic controllers. They could have put him straight to work.

Not sure what all the fuss is about.

No, he shouldn't have let his kid do that, but it's not like he set him up there and went on an early lunch break.

He was standing right there feeding the kid what to say, if any emergency popped up he could have jumped right in.

FTA: The pilots receiving instructions from the child did not appear too concerned with one pilot saying "awesome job."

This.

I've listened to enough LiveATC.Net to know the lingo. If someone was telling me what to do I could have done the same thing as the kid...

Surely they can't be serious about that!

I heard the tape earlier today and frankly, I think this is all much ado about nothing. It's pretty obvious that the pilots are ok with it (and getting a kick out of it to boot) and that the kid's parent is sitting right next to him feeding him instructions. Besides, all the kid is doing was clearing takeoffs, not giving altitudes and vectors for air traffic.

2010-03-03 03:00:59 PM
I wouldn't like it either if a child was coordinating the flight that I was on but he was obviously just reading off something or being told what to say by his dad or something. The news clips this morning made the kid seem like this was the case.

I also don't see why it's a major fuss, at no point was there any danger. The pilots are the ones ultimately responsible and if they weren't comfortable taking off, they don't have to. Now, if the pilots put their kid on the controls of the aircraft then we could have an issue, but just saying "Cleared for Takeoff" or "Switch to Departure" isn't really creating an unsafe enviroment.

"This behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism expected from all FAA employees,"

Yes, god forbid the air traffic controller directly supervises the kid like a responsible parent on bring-your-child-to-work day, and doesn't let the kid play around with buttons and levers.

From what the article said, none of the pilots cared, they liked it, and the kid seemed to do a good job, no planes landed on the same runway at the same time.

Meh. Pretty stupid thing to do considering how seriously the FAA takes stuff, but didn't sound like anyone was in danger. The person was just telling their kid what to say to the pilots.

This whole thing is weird. On one level, jesus christ, this shiat is too important to mess around with. But on the other hand, it sounds like a dad just hanging with his son at work and letting him get involved. In my eyes, its nothing criminal, but i suppose its dangerous. I just think its funny the pilots said awesome job.
