Once again we are presented with the cold, hard icy wind of reality.

Liberals are capable of coming up with all variety of government programs that help all variety of people.

Where they fail is figuring out how to pay for it all, in good times and in bad times.

It's called budget cuts ladies and gentlemen. If you can't pay for your lifestyle, you can only live off credit for so long before something has to go.

I suggest you start alphabetically with the state entitlement programs and a pairs shears.

I also dare Congress or anyone else to even hint at a bail out or I'll personally campaign against them in 2004-2006.

Get real. I hate Davis as much as anybody, but DON'T try to make me choke down this "Simon is qualified" BS. If he couldn't oust Davis who who was a sorry candidate, then he deserved not to win. Davis just proved to be very shrewd in his early campaign ads that smeared Riordan during the repub primaries. (a huge proportion of the anti-Riordan ads were Davis funded)

As for your comment that "By your standard, the Democrats don't have any ideas as far as the voters of America are concerned." Well, actually you're right. Americans don't have faith in a federal democratic legislature.
And in '04, it will most likely swing back, for the same reason it did in '92. But my question is: what do national trends have to do with CA trends? NADA!

I guess you could call you logical train of thought "bait n switch"?

didn't the mexicans steal it from the Indians first? Funny how thats overlooked. Oh well as long we're the bad guys.

as far as california is conserned, just have everyone jump up and down at the same time, start an earthquake and collect the insurance money.

Uh, Cyberluddite, I plan to do EXACTLY THAT for six months of the year.

That way, YOU will have to quit farking, get offa yer ass and go PAY FOR THIS SHIAT YOURSELF. Dikwad.

I love it...a liberal pulling that "love or leave it" crap that - posed to them - would cause no end to their own snarling and bristling at such a "mean spirited" suggestion.

Gewt ready to go to work, Cyberluddite. Your gonna need two jobs to pay for your California paradise....and without my dollars. HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Most of these arguments are total poo-poo. Montana and Idaho (in my neck of the woods) are also deeply in the red this year, the worst they've ever been. Both conservative, low population, highly Republican, and full of Mormons, who take care of each other, not go on welfare. We've got a fair share of mexicans here, but they all have jobs--the white people are too good for those jobs. So what's these state's problem?

Seems kind of optimistic to me.

As a californian, all I can say is, anyone who attributes a 30% drop in tax revenue to the state government is an idiot. People are out of work. A lot of them. Why? Because the economy sucks all to hell. Figure out the reason why that is true, and you've figured out who to blame.

Slikrx: Get real. I hate Davis as much as anybody, but DON'T try to make me choke down this "Simon is qualified" BS. If he couldn't oust Davis who who was a sorry candidate, then he deserved not to win.

Choke on whatever you please. I never said he 'deserved' to win. His qualifications were attacked and I responded with a few facts. Arguing that people 'deserve' things that they don't get is a form of whining that I don't indulge in, unlike some on the left. Simon lost, but had he won he'd have been capable of governing, that's what I'm saying.

And in '04, it will most likely swing back, for the same reason it did in '92. But my question is: what do national trends have to do with CA trends? NADA!

Nonsense. The Republicans won back the CA Assembly in 1994 on the strength of the national campaign waged by the Republicans. They lost it when they indulged themselves in internecine warfare and jacking up their staff salaries instead of proposing some programs that would benefit the state.

I guess you could call you logical train of thought "bait n switch"?

Bait and switch is when you advertise one thing but offer another, so that's an utter non sequitur. I thought I'd apply a consistency test. If result B (Democrats win) means circumstance A (Republicans have nothing to offer) is true in CA, will the person having that opinion apply the same logic to the national level, or was it just an insincere rhetorical device?

God my state (Maine) is in a defecit, so you know what they did?

The cut the budget sure it was only 100mill but we only have 1.1mill poppulation. In california im sure they could cut the budget by atleast 5bill, then you would have to raise taxes, at 30mill population if everyone had to pay 10 dollars more a year that 300mill $. Now what if it was $100 most people spend that much on fast food a year, it wont kill ya to cook for a year. There 3 bill plus 5 from cuts that about 8bill. out of 36 and that only counting res. taxes add in the commerce and industry and your 1/4 of the way out. The rest I have no clue on but still 24 bill is better than 36.

2003-04-22 09:05:54 PM
Just to clarify, Gov. Davis is from the DLC,moderate-to-conservative wing of the Democratic Party. If he was a strong liberal, he might have done something besides whine during the power crisis.

The only problem is as long as money has any value at all he will always be weathly. WE will be the ones eating the cold carcasses of rats. I'm pretty sure they've made sure that could never happen to them within their life time. That's the problem as long as thier rich for their life time they don't care what happens to anybody else even their own children. The problems is money and greed. Greed will destroy anybody and anything around it. Why not the whole world? People that have hope for a world based on money are the real morons. Period.

2003-04-22 09:09:14 PM
Just to clarify, Davis is from the "I'll believe whatever it takes to get elected" wing of the Democrat party. If polls showed that covering yourself in peanut butter got you more votes, Davis would be breaking out the Skippy. He's a complete political chameleon whose only guiding star is what he has to do or say to stay in office.

From california 2002-2003 budget summary:

2002-03 Revenue Sources
(Dollars in millions)
General Fund | Special Fund
Personal Income Tax $42,605 | --
Sales Tax 22,850 | $2,531
Corporation Tax 5,869 | --
Highway Users Taxes -- | 3,244
Motor Vehicle Fees 16 | 3,915
Insurance Tax 1,656 | --
Estate Taxes 615 | --
Liquor Tax 282 | --
Tobacco Taxes 122 | 997
Other 5,290 | 4,841
Total $79,305 | $15,528

Soooo. Yeah. We're gonna make up the ~ $33,000 Million defecit from Motor Vehicle Fees. Riiight.

Anybody notice how income tax and sales tax dominate the list? So unemployment and consumer spending are what killed the budget. Did Gray Davis fire everyone? Is he responsible for the Dotcom bubble bursting?

2003-04-22 09:30:28 PM
From the same source:

General Fund Expenditures
by Agency
(Dollars in Millions)
2001-02 | 2002-03
Legislative, Judicial, Executive $2,659 | $2,627
State and Consumer Services 715 | 513
Business, Transportation & Housing 678 | 378
Technology, Trade, and Commerce 69 | 72
Resources 1,558 | 993
Environmental Protection 423 | 203
Health and Human Services 21,722 | 22,441
Youth and Adult Correctional 5,372 | 5,274
K-12 Education 31,046 | 31,316
Higher Education 9,934 | 9,985
General Government 1,125 | 580
Tax Relief 3,079 | 4,424
Total $78,380 | $78,806
2002-03

So, from the general fund, check out what the legislators and Davis together did last year. He cut General Government by a billion dollars. He cut State and Consumer Services by 200 million. Environmental protection cut in half.

I've heard among the cuts proposed by davis is a massive layoff of teachers, the community college tuition is more than doubling. So he's willing to take money out of education, too.

This is a democrat? Come on. I don't like Davis much but don't call this crapola the action of democrats. These guys are fair-weather dems, they'll do whatever they think the voters want, to keep them in power. Being liberal or conservative has basically nothing to do with anything.

When Dick Celeste (D) took over as governor of Ohio in 83 from conservative 'pube Jim Rhodes, the state was broke. When he left office 8 years later we had a huge budget surplus. Despite the state being on sound financial footing dems lost the governor's race and lost control of both houses of the assembly. Upon taking power the 'pubes immediately passed a huge tax cut which gave my wife and I about $50 a year while providing wealthy Ohians several hundred dollars. They did this while continuing to fund programs Celeste put in place but they ran against.

Predictably after 14 years of misrule the state is $67 billion in debt. And they did it without one stinking lberal Democrat in a position of power.

Exodus2001: Obviously, money has to be the root of all evil, because look, socialism works so well and is so easy to implement. Oh, yeah, and everyone who's rich is that way because of their parents and their internally greedy and evil ways.

So I'm an idiot because I would prefer a state that can be obtained, that will continue to drive humanity forward with the prospect of rewarding hard work and intelligence and let things settle to a natural and fair balance? (libertarian/true conservative. we are more than just republicans who want to smoke weed.)

Actually, we (TRUE Oregonians) probably didn't elect these asshats. My money is on the damn retirees from California coming up here. ;)

And to be honest, how the HELL can Cali be losing money so fast. They took the majority of Oregon's agricultural jobs, as well as many other sources of income for the state, and sent up a bunch of old people in return, who vote against tax hikes and vote dolts into our legislature (as well as a dumbass for governor, who thinks a baseball stadium and millions in school funding is not worth having a casino near Portland).

/FLAME

Okay, moving on... Oregon's economy was greatly influenced by logging. Can't do much of that anymore... but that isn't the fault of our officials.
Then we went to technology industries, and where are those nowadays? In the crapper.
Unemployment is very high in Oregon. Unemployed workers can't really contribute tax dollars. And because we seem to have a number of voters who are afraid of raising taxes or actually helping out our youth, as well as a number of leaders who think helping the school system is less important than most other causes, uh... we suck I guess.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!

2003-04-22 09:44:59 PM
Come on, everyone knows that the state is in debt now because the state didn't vote for Bush in 2000. Bush didn't help during the prower crisis and the US went to war to get the troops out of California. It only made sence to send them to Iraq since that is where most of CA's oil imports come from. This is a vast consipiracy to make the democrats look bad. Next, when the schools close, people will start looting and then foreign troops from those other states will come to california to take over since all the california troops will still be in iraq or afganistan. Bush didn't even try to get anyone elected in california in 2002. Bush is letting hollywood and san francisco prove to be shining examples of democratic principles at work.
