Back in '91 or so, our high school basketball team was playing its rival at their home in the last game of the season. Their ref was a notorious cheat. We were down by 9 for a while, but in the last two minutes of the game, a couple of our players managed to nail three 3-point shots and tie the game. During the last few seconds of the quarter, the other team had the ball and as time ran out, their ref blew his whistle, signaled a foul against the player with the ball, and (I shiat you not) asked our team which one of us fouled him. We just looked at him in disbelief. Our coach protested, but the ref picked one of our guys to pin it on, and the other team's player made his free-throw and won the game.

Now despite that, our guys didn't punch the ref or commit any violence towards him. We simply broke into the guy's car and pissed like we were putting out a fire. Violence is no way to settle a dispute.

kvinesknows: why do you have a league that keeps score at age 6?

What are you, one of those pinko commies who think that we shouldn't hurt little Johnny's feelings by telling him he got scored on 12 time?

/actually I don't care either way.

Something similar happened to my high school when they were winning a playoff game they weren't "supposed" to. Fouls called every few seconds. One was on our guy, who was on the floor holding the ball after being knocked down. Obviously an offensive foul!

The refs RAN out of the gym as the final buzzer sounded. (No, we were not a violent school, and the game was away.)

We laugh at you since your tourney hasn't been relevant since you got rid of the 1 class tourney which made you unique.

In the Milwaukee city conference less then 1%. A friend of mine is a police officer down there and EVERY city conference game is mandated to have at least 5-8 officers with at least 2 in plain clothes just to prevent "issues" from getting out of control. Playoffs are 10+ cops at each game and everyone is on call.

There are black people in Wisconsin? Enough for multiple sports teams? I thought Wisconsin was the "what do you mean there are other races?" whitest state of them all. Now my worldview is crushed.

But seriously, Quevyn? What in god's name is in the heads of those black women? I thought they only named their daughters badly.

That would be Iowa.

not for nothin, but what are the odds one of these kids actually punched a ref??

that sounds pretty dubious if you ask me.

more likely scenario: the 2 players got in the ref's face after the game to yell at him, the ref yelled back, and a little shoving match ensued in which the ref's face might've been tapped.

odds that the ref simply got cold-cocked with a haymaker? 1 out of 10.

FTFA:"The two kids that had the altercation are deeply sorry and embarrassed. They know nobody is bigger than the game and they know the difference between right and wrong. They're being punished accordingly and hopefully this will make them better people in the end.

"Our basketball program apologizes to the referee and to everyone in high school basketball for this. But what is most important to me are the kids themselves. We can't afford to give up on them because they made a mistake.

"Our job is to help them learn from it. Our reputation took another hard hit, but in reality we have a bunch of good kids in this school. The players know that everyone will be watching them. They just want to do their school proud."

Fark that, after-school athletics are a privilege, not a right. Hitting someone is a criminal act, not a mistake. Missing a layup or losing your cool and using profane language, that's a mistake... punching someone not so much. I had to waste my whole day in court yesterday testifying against a dumbass who didn't get the memo on the difference between a mistake and a crime until they showed up with two hired goons at my best friends house and tried to start crap. They aren't going to be better people in the end, they'd be better people if you had an enforceable policy of "you hit people, no more sports for you" but all this coddling and "ooooh, you punched someone, you poor dear, let me help you get through this tough time" crap is just going to reinforce the idea that they are somehow immune from any serious consequences.

wage0048: Do they expect sympathy? The one who actually hit the official should be banned from athletics for the remainder of his high-school career.

\Not just suspended, but acutally banned from being on any team's roster, wearing a uniform, team activities.

Uh 'tardmitter punching a ref is a more valid reason than bad grades. Bad grades are only really a valid reason in college with scholorships.

It's strange how a game, where the rules are clearly defined, always brings out the killer ape in people. Also strange how high school was such a blur to me, except for a similar basketball game (which I neither played in nor cared about.....was there in the band). A crosstown rival game we lost in a sudden death overtime. Ref didn't -quite- run off the floor in time. To get to the locker room, he had to run by the end of the bleachers, and someone reached down and got him by the whistle cord, damn near strangled him. These days, if I was a ref, I'd sure have a breakaway cord.
