Shrugging Atlas: I don't really see how the mushroom cloud figures into the list.

RotLD is a farking comedy, there's nothing horrific about it. Yeah, "comedy horror" but nothing to scare you. How any part of that movie made it into the list is unknown.

/get the damn screwdriver out of my head

Also consider:

Deep Impact (1998)
The Exorcist III (1990)

How about no.

That movie was retarded. Bad premise, nonsensical plot, and cheap shock scares.

Tylercn: This movie was not that great but i think the final sequences were well done.

That shot was the scariest part of the film entirely because that was when thousands of theater audiences collectively decided to kick the sh*t out of someone.

I agree, but that scene was very well done.

Probably doesn't count because it's not a horror movie, but the cyclone (new window) in The Wizard of Oz gets my vote for distant horror. That thing scares the hell out of me.

Ummm.. no thanks.

The Exorcist III is an underrated film. There's a whole host of awesome creepy shiat in that movie. Grandma crawling on the ceiling and the nurse getting her head cut off with garden shears. Yeah it's pretty awesome.

Not to mention Brad Dourif at his creepiest.

What is 'distant horror'?

As opposed to close-up horror?

CRTFA. Can't read the farking article.

That movie was cool. Precisely for the opposite reasons you gave. I'm not sure, but I think You and I have gone round and round about this.

The Changeling with George C. Scott.

Interesting concept.

If "temporally distant" fits the bill then I would add the chilling computer scenes in The Fly where a still humanoid Brundell discovers what happened. (Not the one pictured below)

I'll take the abduction scene from Memories of Murder any day of the week. Too bad I can't find a screen capture of it anywhere, but that said the scene itself wouldn't make for a very good capture in the first place. But it was the single creepiest movie scene I think I've ever seen, and I've watch a lot of movies.

iollow: Joy25: The one where the lady was standing in the reeds looked creepy.

I may see that one.

A lot of horror from the 60s and 70s was creepy. Now they're just all shaky-cam and comedic and pretty much not even trying to be scary.

I like creepy. It's scarier than bloody.

I always get the creeps in "28 Days Later" when the camera pans up the highway to the burning city.

good one too, the wtf look on his face turning to dread when the computer screen is panning out from DNA to a picture of a fly

Maybe; The Strangers is pretty much the summation of everything I dislike about horror movies, and I've probably brought that up at some point here before.

Distant horror... how about the husky running over the snow in the opening sequences of John Carpenter's The Thing? A greally great, often-overlooked horror movie. I like it for the claustrophobic and paranoia elements.

Yes I'm a Meteorologist: I always get the creeps in "28 Days Later" when the camera pans up the highway to the burning city.

The Church scene, when he mutters, "hello?" and all the bodies suddenly animate, was freaky. I liked the herd-o-infected scene in 28 Weeks Later, too.

I like it because it actually doesn't do what typical horror movies do. The killers have no motive other than killing (kind of like killers!) the musical cues are to a minimum, and at best misleading, the killers are not typical, and the "protagonists" are totally expendable. It was refreshing. It felt like 1977 for awhile, when I watched it.

I honestly lol at that movie and I don't believe it was intended as a comedy.

I mean really, no one told them before it opened that it was a train wreck.

The fact that they were remaking a train wreck should have tipped them off.

No. It was most assuredly not. There are a lot of reasons why, but lets say a weird pagan cult off the coast of England makes more sense. And I think the bee crap was added to make it a weird female cult.

Not so, with Chris Lee kicking ass as Lord Summersisle.

2010-03-02 12:35:54 PM
I only know this because there's a jar in the background of one shot that's actually labeled "foreskins."

No mention of Jaws?

At night when they're drinking and singing in the boat and you get a long shot from outside just in time to see a barrel pop up to the surface.

Any movie list that includes The Grudge, I cannot take seriously.

See also, The Ring.

Scary with training wheels.
