Chrome isn't worth mentioning as long as it doesn't have true ad block or a BetterPrivacy equivalent. You guys are pimping what is basically alpha-quality vaporware.

I really don't understand this. They decided on the ballot screen compromise long before Windows 7 was launched in the EU. Who let them piss all over their legislation for six months?

Another seven browsers, namely Sleipnir, Green Browser, Maxthon, Avant, Flock, K-meleon, and Slim, will be randomly ordered on the rest of the screen

Thank God I don't have to design sites for Europe.

This is the litmus test. If they can't figure out the tools they need to do their job, then their job should belong to someone who can.

Cool story, bro:
We had a policy at my old job that if any employees put in more than 2 service requests in a month or more than 10 in 6 months for help logging into our portal (legitimate issues didn't count - i.e. something that was our fault), we reported them to their managers for incompetence.

I don't think anyone got fired, but there were people getting written up and most of them we didn't hear from anymore after that.

Last time I checked, Chrome's adblocking plugin still loaded the ads. It just hides them. That is not an acceptable solution to many of us (myself and, I suspect, OnmyojiOmn). Also, Chrome's cookie management is horrible. Is it asking to much for a white list?

No. It isn't. There are no effective script blocking tools for Chrome, and there won't be. If any are developed, Google will treat them as hacks and attempt to defeat them.
Surely you understand why this is? Does this REALLY need to be explained to you?

Apparently Europe never heard of the ability to DOWNLOAD / INSTALL whatever freakin browser you want!!

Love when people whine about the Microsoft monopoly, then blog about it on their MAC!!

Or better yet use Firefox as their default browser in Windows to complain.

And we all know that IE is baked into the OS, who cares!! Just don't use it.

At home, we have the main computer w/2 profiles (husband's & mine) and he also has a laptop. The main computer's always on, so it's convenient for him to just use that instead of his laptop.

The only thing I ask is that he doesn't use IE on the main computer. I've got FF & Chrome on that one yet he STILL uses IE. And I can always tell because Spyware Doctor goes berserk.

Outside of the community of geeks, nerds, and somewhat smart ten-year olds, you would be surprised how many people don't have a clue on how to Google "Firefox" (assuming they know what Firefox even is), download, and get it running.

I know it is shocking.
They are often intimidated even to try.

Doctor Jan Itor: Mosaic !

I remember when I first saw Mosaic and it seemed incredibly advanced compared with what came before it. Mind you, the first release of it didn't have a history or any sort of "back" button, if you wanted to go to a previous web page you had to type the URL in again.

I'm not sure I would agree with those numbers, however I have wished in the past that we had something of this sort. We had one lady (head admin assistant) who worked here for 15 years, and was completely incompetent when it came to computers. She went into a full blown panic one day because one of her desktop icons moved 6 inches over one day. You would have to show her how to do something repeatedly 10 or 20 times before she would finally be comfortable with it. Then, after she had probably performed the task 30 or so times on her own, would suddenly completely forget how to do it. It was like her head was an Etch A Sketch and someone snuck up behind her and shook it.

They finally got rid of her as part of a head count reduction. I got drunk that night in celebration.

I've changed my FF icon to the IE icon and called it internet explorer. Throw in an IE theme and anyone using your computer won't know the difference.

Or you could go all out and follow this walkthrough^.

Seeing some ads momentarily as the page loads? Extensions can only remove resources after they are loaded, not stop Chrome from fetching them. The Chrome developers are working on remedying this.

Bold for importance not to be condescending.

We have someone like that at work.

One day, we were transitioning over from our Outlook calendar to Google Calendar. We had a tech there who showed her exactly how to create a new Google account, import everything from Outlook, set up calendar sharing with her coworkers, etc.

Two weeks later, a ticket came in saying that "EVERYTHING'S GONE!". She went on to say that since Google had deleted (!) all of her calendar, she's having to type everything in again by hand.

It turns out that the "leave me signed in" cookie has (or had, I don't recall exactly) a maximum lifetime of about two weeks, after which it expires. Being confused with a login screen, she went through the procedure to create a new account which, naturally, was empty of calendar content.

After signing her out of the new account and back into her existing Google account, all was well.

/still doesn't understand how there are people like that in the world
//will probably be similar when I get older, but I hope not

Yes. The average person doesn't have, want, or really need to have an "edumacation about their technology." People want their computers to be an appliance, like their fridge, stove, or TV.

It's like iTunes. I had the devil of a time with it until I stopped thinking like a techie and started thinking like an end user. I still hate iTunes, but at least I understand why it works the way it does, and I can see why your typical schlep would want it.

There's a surprisingly large number of people who don't even grasp the concept of a "browser." They think that the internet exists inside Internet Explorer, and it is the only thing which runs it.

I use Chrome, FF, and IE for various things. Mostly I use Chrome because I like its style (and the automatic spell checker), but sometimes it won't play movies and the browser cache has to be emptied constantly. I still pop open IE for Hulu because it seems to work the best.

At work I'm stuck with IE 6 because the computer network I'm on (which is run by a large government agency) refuses to upgrade. They hear "security risk" and flail around in panic. Apparently they're waiting for an upgrade that has no bugs whatsoever. That, and they're extremely slow. Heck, we just got upgraded to Office 2007 a few months ago.

I think I need some sleep.... I just spent a few minutes giggling about this part of TFA:

Although the update has been prepared for Windows XP, Vista and 7, not all users will see it.

It will not pop up in front of those who already run a different default browser, such as Firefox, Safari or Chrome.

really? I wonder why they won't get the message? isn't this terrible! how will they know about other browsers if they are already using one....

/use Firefox at home
// still stuck with IE6 at work because they are too lazy to update it ... since we run thin clients they only need to do it once as well!

groverpm: The only reason to use IE is when websites aren't rendered correctly in FF (often) and Opera (rarely). Haven't tried any of the others (yet).

The only time I have seen a website not rendered correctly in FF is because the site is a POS plague-stricken with scripts, flash, banner ads, etc. which my NoScript and add-ons eat up giving me an unreadable mess. Virtually any normal site is fine on FF.

Heh. Kinda like the article I read some time ago (I can't seem to find it), where the author was predicting the end of Linux because Windows Vista came out.

He was evidently under the impression that Linux was basically a pirated version of XP with a different visual theme. Since Vista was purportedly more piracy-resistant, he was thinking this would result in the downfall of Linux.

The author even went on to say that it was impossible for Linux to exist independently, because it cost Microsoft billions of dollars to develop Windows, yet Linux was distributed for free. How could Linux exist without stealing from Microsoft?

Obviously, he was an idiot that didn't understand how this all worked, but that seemed pretty par for the course.
