Yeah, colors are a distraction too.

Pants, shirt, vest. Black, white, Black. Call it a day. Black Umbrella optional, compact non pointy models only.

Make the school in question pay for the uniforms, and the one or two extra sets needed per child and leave the responsibility of all repair and replacement fees entirely up to the school. See how long before something else becomes the focus.

Uniforms yeah! Maybe they can go with miniskirts and white knee socks for all the girls like the local Catholic schools in this area.

I really don't see the problem with a basic dress code. Not uniforms.

They have a uniform policy at my son's school. Not really uniforms, but prescribed acceptable clothing.

Cut & Paste from the school's website:

Top Garment: solid colors, red, black, gray, white,

Material: cotton twill, cotton/polyester blend, wool, no spandex

Shirt/Blouse: short sleeve or long sleeve, oxford, or polo style, (no sleeveless, half sleeve or low cut,), must have collar or mock/turtleneck, may not be worn as jackets, no denim, worn tucked in (exception-sweat shirt)

Undershirt: if worn, white only, solid, no designs,

Additional outer-ware: if worn, pullover sweaters, cardigan sweaters, vests, sweatshirts, shirt/blouse with collar must be worn underneath in solid colors of red, black, white, gray

Coats: May include, raincoat, windbreaker, to be worn only in inclement weather, large distractive emblems are unacceptable. The school prefers that all heavy coats fall into the colors of red, white, black or gray. Coats can be solid or a mixture of these colors. Heavy coats that do not comply with dress code will have to be removed after entering any classroom and placed in locker or on back of chair

Bottom Garment: khaki, black, navy

Material: cotton twill, cotton/polyester blend, wool, no spandex, no denim

Pants: dress-type, worn at the waist, hemmed, side and back pockets only, no cargo pockets, no jeans, no cutoffs, no denim material, no more than one size larger than waist, no torn ankle slits, pants may not drag on ground, no overalls, no hip huggers, no zippers in back, no lace up pants,

Shorts: hemmed, no more than one size larger than waist, no cutoffs, no shorter than 3 inches above the knee, Capri acceptable (no spandex), no denim, no overalls

Skirts/skorts/jumpers: hemmed, no denim, no shorter than 3 inches above the knee

It's a fail policy, IMO, since so many of the kids there wear their clothing outlandishly over or undersized.

Clothes are definitely a distraction in school. Outlaw them altogether.

Isn't Jesus being dead an important part of the whole Christian religion ?

anyways, yeah, kids shouldn't be dressed up as sexy whores. There is enough teacher-student sexytime happening without that adding fuel to the system. And the other kids don't need the non-stop sex message at that age. Their already primed for hormone surges as it is.

That's always their argument, because they can't stand out if they're wearing uniforms. They may have to resort to - OMG - developing a personality.

I'm all for uniforms. It really sucked growing up poor and having the other kids make fun of me for my off brand jeans and K-Mart shoes. Seriously, kids would pick fights with me because of my clothes. My daughter wears a uniform (Catholic school) and I think it kind of levels the playing field. Even public schools in America are instituting uniforms. Chicago Public Schools is a good example. I can't imagine what kind of grief I would have gotten if I wore K-Mart shoes in a ghetto CPS grade school.

If the words and colors on the are the problem but uniforms cost money, can't the school just make everybody be naked? Problem solved.

Proponents of the idea say it could increase student achievement and safety while leveling the playing field for all students.

Are there statistics on how uniforms affect academic performance? I'm curious about this.

Also, it doesn't level the playing field at all. Students will always find ways to differentiate themselves from each other regardless of how restrictive a dress code is. Always. And they'll use those things to force people into class distinctions instead of regular clothing.

Zik-Zak: That's always their argument, because they can't stand out if they're wearing uniforms. They may have to resort to - OMG - developing a personality.

Personal appearance is a representation of everyone's personality. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't express himself, in one way or another, through his preferred mode of dress.

No, uniforms don't make it easier for the poor kids. They buy one uniform and wear it until it falls apart, while the rich kids always have a clean new uniform to wear.

2010-02-28 02:35:28 PM
I grew up in a relatively poor household, wore a lot of hand-me-downs and such, clothes that weren't stylish back in the eighties.
My parents weren't able to afford the fancy hightops and brand name jeans that the other kids wore. So even though I was clean, athletic, and somewhat socially savvy, I was relegated to the bottom of the pecking order. The bullying could be brutal.

When I was 14 I was given the opportunity to go to school in England for a year. They had uniforms, which were inexpensive, and nobody could tell at a glance who came from a wealthy family and who did not.

Real freedom from being judged by your clothes. They judged you by your personality instead.
I will always endorse uniforms as a meathod of creating true equality in the classroom.

Easy to slut up within their guidelines. The girls just have to buy thin shirts 3 sizes too small and wear no panties under the skirts.

2010-02-28 02:36:24 PM
I must be getting old, but I don't see any problems with uniforms. We have to wear them at work after all. (Maybe not company purchased and with a little room for variation, but still). As long as the kids are treated like people and still allowed to be individuals where it counts.

Oh here's an idea. You get your uniforms if you toss out zero tolerance. I think it's fair.

When I was in high school the dress code for girls was amended to require shirts to be worn under sweaters. Girls were wearing sweaters and bras with no shirts. As a high school boy, I had no problem with this.

What about sweat pants with "Jesus is dead" written across the ass?

Also, love uniforms. Much sexier than "Juicy" clothes, IMNSHO.

Sweatpants that read "juicy" across the back

I always imagined that meant that they had some kind of puss-filled herpes infection beneath the article of clothing advertising this fact.

Another country implemented uniforms to control the behavior in children. They were very successful!!! The children did 'exactly' what their country asked of them with no questions or dissent. I cannot believe you wouldn't like this idea.

Uniforms are for the common good of all children

The majority of our schools have uniform policys. Several obvious benefits accrue. Particularly my daughter didn't take two hours every morning deciding what to wear. Also she only needed ONE pair of shoes to wear to school.
