I'm down in SJ. Better get those quake boots ready. People wear such things in Cali right?

The Bay's gonna get shakin' sometime soon. As is the rest of the world. All the recent tectonic activity is putting pressure on faults that haven't ruptured in some time. Down here in SJ, it's the same situation. I KNOW, because I got a 98 on my Geology Regents exam 10 years ago.

shower_in_my_socks: We have stories of building collapses. Light damage is one thing, outright collapses take it to another level. There's going to be some ugly stuff when the sun comes up.

I have this feeling as well. The coverage would not be continuing in this sort of way if there was not some significant damage and casualties either coming in or that is feared to be coming in.

For those (like me) not aware of Concepción, Chile, it's a metro area of 1.3 people. That makes it similar in size to Jacksonville, FL or Memphis, TN. Even with seismic planning, an 8.8 70 miles away and fairly shallow isn't going to end well.

It looks like a beautiful city, hopefully it's not as bad as I'd expect.

Pretty much true. A guy who was on my sister's highschool hockey team got bit by a shark while surfing, it wasn't even news except for mention in the police briefs section of the paper.

Yep, I can sense it. I can feel the USA being put on the spot to donate insurmountable sums of money to rebuild dirt shacks. Today will not be a good day, indeed.

Forget high ground. A repeat of the 1811-1812 triplets would basically disintigrate areas from Chicago to NOLA, OKC to the eastern seaboard. The ground is fluff and few buildings are up to even basic seismic safety codes. The waves would travel much further, with greater intensity than anything in or near the San Andreas fault zone.

Chile is a developed country, they don't live in shacks. Keep your ideology out of this; or, at the very least, know what you're talking about before you embarrass yourself.

Just saying.

Problem is, "some time soon" in geological terms can mean anything from 10 minutes to 10,000 years. It could happen in our lifetimes, but the odds of that happening are not particularly worrying.
