Coming from a source where most of their anchors are either x-jocks or x-cheerleaders, this article does not surprise.

Athletes might be intelligent, but if they can get everything they want with a fifth-grade level education, why should they keep studying?

This is very true, especially when you consider Ox's insightful, innovative, and informative history report from the end of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Everything IS different. Who are we to argue that? We don't exist in stasis; our existences are defined by multitudes of changes - nay, our very existences embody the concept of change.

Still, when all things considered, everything *is* the same. In light of it all, we still define our experiences, observations, and actions by way of the human experience.

Things are "more moderner" than before. Can you look me in the eye and tell me that Ox was wrong to conclude that humanity had a front-row seat to the dawn of amazing discoveries and staggering developments, that we were on the cusp of the most modernest times in recent history?

Not only that, but we must also concur with his findings about technology being "bigger AND smaller," if one considers the communication advances that we have made, the far-sweeping changes that have forever altered the way that we reach out to each other and conduct day-to-day business.

What's more, you'd be a fool to believe that computers played no substantial role on this stage of changes, that computers had nothing to do with our remarkable advancements. Ox couldn't have been more right when he said, and I quote, "It's computers."

And yes, my friends: San Dimas High School football rules.

While Ox may not have received approval or even a modicum of respect from such a close-minded educational institution, I believe that time will vindicate his academic endeavors.

Good night, and good luck.

Of course athletes do well academically. With so many states having "no-pass no-play" rules in effect, coaches will get teachers fired if their star QB isn't on the field. Therefore, grades are inflated, and athletes pass.

This does not take into account the general state of classes most athletes take. While some athletes are quite intelligent, many wind up in the easiest levels of classes simply to maintain a GPA that will enable them to pass.

Wake me when there's a real study done.

2010-02-26 10:44:43 PM
This of course has nothing to do with the favoritism that athletes are shown in so many instances. Regardless, they may have "better grades" in some instances but that hardly means they're more intelligent.

Depends what type of athletes. From what a coach in high school told me (and I'm not gonna bother finding a cite) kids in fencing and cross country were the smartest in general.

You'll always find a few smart jocks... I had friends who did high school and college football who were as smart or smarter than me. But they were the exception to the rule.

Just look at the listed majors for players on a college football team... you'll have 20 'Kinseology' or 'Physical Therapy' majors for every engineering student. And that's probably being generous. Distribution is more even when you get down to hockey and baseball, and by the time you get down to track it's pretty close to the college as a whole.

Oh, wait, the headline didn't say anything about intelligence, just doing well academically. Well... duh.

In my school, jocks got a free pass for bullying and lack of academic achievement, with their grades being artificially inflated as long as they kept scoring. Every now and then, they'd get a token detention session, but weren't required to do anything there. It's not a case of sour grapes or jealousy; I SAW how stupid these people were on a daily basis, and it always amazed me that they got praised for passing Leathercrafting I, while I was wrestling with Gifted English Special Topics, and no one gave me the time of day. Hell, I could certainly have walked a ball into the end zone and dropped it there, if that would have made them happy.

Happily, most of the jocks I used to know are now working in crap jobs, because their education was considered second to their athletic ability.

More bragging? Really?

Seems like you need to feel that you are more intelligent than those who are more athletic than you, so you make generalization about "jocks".

If you thought about it for even a second you would realize that athletes run the gamut from morons to geniuses. Just as geniuses run the gamut from completely unathletic to olympic level athletes.
