dittybopper: rosonowski: My roommate is of the opinion that Patterson exists as a 'political suicide bomber'. He was put into office by his party with the understanding that it would end his career, but that they could enact all the unpopular policies they wanted in his term. I tend to agree.

He wasn't "put into office", except that he was lieutenant governor when Eliot Spitzer was forced to resign. Even then, he would have *PROBABLY* been reelected had it not been for two things: Paterson is essentially honest and tries to do a good job, and the economic crisis and his response to it made him powerful enemies in Albany, especially among the health care and education lobbies.

In order for your roommate's theory to be true, the Democratic Party in NY would have had to:

A. Known that Eliot Spitzer would be forced to resign.
B. Known in 2007 that the economy would tank in 2009.
C. Known what Paterson's response to that crisis would be.

I find that a bit of a stretch.

An awful lot of conspiracy theories fall apart if you just remember that people making the decisions at the time were certainly not prescient.

Has no effect on the election. Lazio will win anyway. Or Rudy. Or Mike.

But this seems odd how he's being accused of something without a single verified fact and everyone's all over it. I predict Paterson's facts will check out and his accuser's will prove to be fraudulent. No one will care nor feel bad about railroading the guy.

I don't get the whole thing. The state cops would know it would come out if they tried to intimidate the woman (and the question of did they act on their own or did the gov say talk to her), the Gov it appears didn't say much to the woman other than ask how she is doing and if he could do anything. Granted it isn't good to contact someone who is involved in a legal issue as a result of abuse with someone who works for you, but I think he honestly thought he was doing the right thing. Isn't he really not running because he wouldn't get elected based on his #'s before this thing blew up and this sure doesn't help. If he had say 80% and it came out that he liked to wear womens clothes and huff paint he would run again.

I heard the other day that several Dems in NY wanted him to drop out. Kind of like a vote of no confidence. It happens to politicians often that their party doesn't like the whiff of scandal and asks them to resign or drop out of a race. But you're right - there may be nothing of substance to any allegation but even if that is proven, those responsible for slinging the allegations, those who believed them and those who asked the guy to step aside will never apologize. Which leads me to believe that there is something else about the guy they don't like and this is just an excuse so they don't have to publicly admit what the real issue is.

With the fiscal mess of NY, Patterson did an alright job and made a lot of tough calls to try and get the budget under control. As a result he did things that pissed of everyone and made him unelectable. He's been asked to not run for months now (even Obama asked him) but he wouldn't budge. Then the papers started going after him. I think this is the second "big" scandal to come out this year and neither really reflect on Patterson himself, as far as I can tell.

Except for promoting this waste of skin from a driver to his top aide. That I can't wrap my mind around.

At least we got the Better Bottle Bill out of the Patterson era.

Personally I think it's because he wanted to avoid the beating he would take. I don't know many people in my area that'd vote for him... *I* wouldn't... I actually do miss Spitzer... if not for his need for 5,000 dollar a night whores, I thought he had a great chance to get our state back in the black.

Oh well.

Thank god. This guy is the epitome of everything that's wrong with Albany. He's your typical self-entitled, corrupt, political crony who was more than happy flying under the radar and milking the system for all it's worth.

Then he got promoted to Governor b/c his boss got busted for boning whores. Next thing you know _his_ dirty laundry got aired.

Every politician in Albany should get to be governor for one day, 90% wouldn't last until lunch.

I can tell you why.
Three reasons:

1. A natural urge to cite sources when posting on message boards. Commendable.

2. Fire Insurance. Just in case this post gets flamed for being the most retarded thing ever posted on the internet, he can blame his friend for it. Even jump on the bandwagon if necessary. ("Yeah, I thought it was stupid, too. My roommate is stupid!")

3. Bragging. He has an actual real-life, human friend and he wants to lord it over us basement dwellers.

The last Democratic Governor left the state with a surplus. The next governor, Republican Pataki, blew that in his first term, then lied about how bad the budget was, claiming we had no budget problems, when he running for re-election instead of trying to fix that problem, yet you're suggesting we trust that party.

When Pataki took office he inherited a budget surplus which he and his fellow Republicans proceed to destroy. The guys who came after Pataki did inherit more of a mess than Pataki did when he took office.

Good. He's a crappy governor. I think everyone in this state heartily wishes we never found out that his predecessor was fond of expensive cooch, since in all other respects he probably would have been much better for the state. Hope Cuomo can step it up, but honestly NY is ungovernable due to the incredible, baldfaced, unashamed corruption in Albany in all parties.

2010-02-26 01:14:35 PM
Apparently the entire Democratic Party nationwide now practices Chicago-style politics.

If you can't win in the next election cycle, either go "spend more time with your family" or we'll send some guys who will help you get under the bus.

No? I was going for a "Your participation in electing or support of a candidate does not nullify the position he legally fills or the laws/changes that become enacted under his term in office" response to the rather tiring call of "I didn't vote for him" or "He wasn't elected". Perhaps I don't give good byte.

Gee, I wonder why the New York Times would go after him? I mean, what possible reason could they have for actively digging up dirt on Paterson? It's just *IMPOSSIBLE* that they are trying to influence politics, right? They *CAN'T* be biased, they are the "paper of record"! This is the kind of thing that FAUX News does!

Yeah it's funny how reality has a liberal bias. The Times dialed the phone and held a gun to Patterson's head while he engaged in witness intimidation on behalf of his aide. Man, those liberals are evil, huh?

Good, so he is gone, but New York State government is still an absolute mess. All of Albany needs to be cleaned out if anything is going to change. The Legislature is the real issue here as they prevent any meaningful change from coming to New York.

I just moved here a few months ago and the state politics here make Pennsylvania look like utopia. And the taxes are outrageous.
