RIP Colonel Howard and thank you

/Jakevol2 does grandma know you're on the computer again?

Jakevol2: what I was expressing was true sentiment.

Just looked at your profile.

You won't find me swelling with pride for anyone in the military for any reason ever.

Nor would we find you without an open box of Suzy-Qs nearby.

Nor would we find you in the company of an even partially sober woman.

Nor would we find you successfully completing a job application.

I could go on, but to be honest, you strike me as the kind of man that would take their internet anger out on their grandmother, whose basement you live in, and withhold a few meals from her out of spite for your lot in this world. Looking at you, it's clear life has not been kind to you, and you have little to look forward to. So I won't provoke you further. Rather, I'll suggest that you find SOMEONE you can look up to as a hero, and try to emulate them. Maybe you will then gain some character and not die bitter and alone, listening to Sammy Hagar, wallowing in self-pity and Krispy Kremes.

I8B4U: I'm honestly curious, how do you justify yourself?

Must be those tattoos. Because when I see a guy with a half-skeleton tatooed above his right wrist, I think to myself, "Do I tell this guy that my truck needs 10W-30 and a new Fram oil filter, or should I thank him for my fries being crispy and not oversalted?"

Then again, I'm an a-hole. Your mileage may vary.

mrlewish: Hero?

How so? The man seemed to be a walking bullet magnet, nothing heroic about that.. probably a pretty poor soldier if he is that bad at not being hit also 36 years in and only a Colonel? My dad did 2 tours and Vietnam and didn't get hit once.. (Armor one tour and Attached to a South Vietnamese unit as a forward combat advisory the other and member of the 82nd Airborne) he does tell a story about a sniper taking a crack at him. Also when back in Saigon about going to the movies in town with one hand on a 45 tucked into his shirt, and I'm sure there are things that he would rather not discuss.

my dad could beat up your dad

Rarely do I post. I mean rarely. Usually I just lurk around and sometimes laugh my butt off at the comments. I don't care whether or not DV2 is joking or not, he's a douche.

Just once, DV, hear the air raid sirens go off and know that a missile is coming for you. When that happens make sure to enshrine your skidmarked panties next to your giant douche on your nightstand.

This man, volunteered or voluntold, served his country. Bad decisions or good, he still stuck it out, and that's the monstrous understatement of the year. This man deserves respect and has mine in every way possible. Taps plays and I'll drop a salute for him.

I served my country, and proudly. I even served if it came down to it to defend your right to speak. Even if it is turd gobbling regurgitated spew you call speech. If all you wanted to do was to troll, congratulations you did. If not, more of your post will fall on deaf ears thanks to the ignore feature placed here.

Jakevol2: what I was expressing was true sentiment.
Tell that to one soldier face to face. Go ahead, I'll wait....then repost your picture.

How much dancing are you going to do with arthritic knees? Must be tough to be that young and so fat your knees are already giving out. No wonder you are so bitter about people who have actually DONE something.

Go back to your Farmville, PetVille, Fishville world loser.

RIP Colonel Howard. And many thanks.

I do believe that there was this phrase... how you say? Ah yes: don't feed the troll.

It doesn't matter where you are on the Internet they're always around. Whether they mean it or they just turn out to be that way. That is the nature of these things. Freedom of speech [even when it's pure unadulterated jackassery] welcome to it. In the very least it lets you know what kind of person they are so you can move on to the next.

Anywho.

Some people are just more comfortable on the battlefield than anywhere else. The Colonel was a brave man for being able to handle combat the way he did. Racking up that much extra wrapping paper is impressive. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to handle the battlefield in a similar manner at all.

/Be excellent to each other out there kids.

He done did do a darn good job taking care of his own men. For some I guess a hero, but let's not forget he was a guy sent to kill people fighting for independence and defending their homeland from an invading/occupying force. He was a cog in a policy that resulted in 4,000,000 dead Vietnamese and 58,000 thousand dead Americans. I have a hard time considering him a victim or a hero of that policy when he benefited from it personally. This should be mentioned. Definitely a good fighter though.

Well, the nice thing about history as a whole is everybody is either "coulda woulda shoulda","it never happened, don't know what you're talking about", or "the government lied to us, oh noes!"

This is but ONE MAN. Not the entire Vietnam War. We're just honoring one person and thanking him.

So if the U.S. decides to invade any country for any reason we should always thank the soldiers for either believing it's right or blindly following? We should just thank them for doing their job well even it's wrong? I'm still on the fence about this one. Not trying to be a prick and I do love my homeland.

mrlewish: I did RTFA. And yes I as in the service 4 years in the USMC .. first gulf war though I didn't get do much since my unit was the last combat ready unit on the west coast... SOC battalion, I carried a 60 so please keep your uninformed opinions to yourself. So what that he was E8.. promotions were fast and furious during Vietnam and battlefield promotions to officer were not exactly rare. (though still not common) The point I was/am trying to make is that when you get in multiple FUBAR occasions in combat then something is wrong with your methodology. (Translation: Sloppy) I'm not detracting from his service which is admirable when anybody decides to serve. In other words the best fighters go in and make the fight as lopsided as possible (the enemy doesn't shoot back because they are already dead) Who would you rather be next to..the guy who has been wounded multiple times on multiple occasions or the guy that does his job without getting himself hurt?

Not you.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill

Audie Murphy is behind George "Bud" Day.

I do love hearing about Audie Murphy though. 5' 5.5", 110 pounds And he grew to 5'7", 145 by the end of the war.

And he's the most decorated soldier of WWII. I guess the whole army macho thing isn't such a big deal when you have a gun.

Oh, and props the Col. Howard.

The army macho thing is for grunts and hollywood as I understand it. IIRC, The elite forces generally don't have guys who could pass for professional bodybuilders.

I disagree. I think that he actually died back in Vietnam but decided that he still have more to do with his life so he told Death to wait for him. And Death, not wanting to get seriously farked up, waited.

Hondo "Isn`t your boy "Barry" Obama the one who HATES war and everything about the military??? Won`t back up our soldiers."

You might want to put down the red KoolAid and read budget appropriations.

And Obama is sending at least SOME of the guys we need to Afghanistan...which Bush completely ignored the last few years.

Spreading lies about the CinC during wartime puts you in Al Quaeda's camp, son.
