From TFA :

Because of privacy concerns, the dogs are not allowed in courtrooms or to be present during interviews, Harris County Assistant District Attorney Donna Hawkins said.

Haha, privacy concerns. Because you never know if Emily the dog is going to totally spill the beans once she gets together with the rest of the dogs. She's such a blabbermouth.

What if it's a victim of a dog attack?

These dogs can be used to "color" the testimony of victims as well.

System introduces dog to child.
Child produces testimony it thinks the system (prosecutor) wants, in order to prolong the child's contact with the dog.

2010-02-23 08:51:07 AM
This could be a pretty rough way to find out some kid is deathly allergic to dogs.

Unless there's a thunderstorm or vacuum cleaner, then all hell breaks loose.

One of my dogs actually follows the vacuum around. Even after I vacuumed him. First time I've seen that one. GSP's are very strange.

Personally, I think it would depend on the breed and demeanor of the dog. I'm scared of little yippy dogs. The only dog that ever bit me had to jump up to bite me at the top of my calf. He was two houses away from his yard, too.

Yipper dogs go well in curry.

The dogs are trained to turn their sorrowful heads back towards the witness apply a comforting paw onto their lap and whine with sympathy. The really good ones can bark, "I ruv roo!" after the witness has finished testimony and growl at the defendant.

All the dogs talked about in TFA were Labradors.

A breed of which I'm personally a big fan. I think as far as service dog breeds go it's basically Labs, Goldens and Shepherds.

Little yippy dogs are cute. But I can't imagine them being calming.

My German Shepherd Dog on the other hand, would be great at that job!

My olde english bulldogge is a therapy dog... you might be surprised by the wide variety of breeds involved, goldens and labs top the list, but the next most common one I have seen: Pitbulls.

These were the dogs that gave me grief when I had a paper route ( many years ago). Larger breeds rarely gave me any problems*, but some of the small ones did their best to try to kill me, good thing they weighed under 10 lbs....

* exception made for one mean German Shepherd.

I guess I was thinking mostly guide dogs, disabled-assist dogs and police dogs, but you're quite right, my list of service dog breeds and jobs is not exhaustive.

Must have stopped because of the human dog handlers mentioned.

Though I don't really see why a yellow lab or a golden retriever or so on would really need one to do the job.

I would sign up for this service if I wasn't so allergic to dogs. I hate going into court to regularly testify as to the status of a few foster cases. Or maybe if some particularly nasty mean dogs could be used to intimidate the defendants, I would definitely take my antihistamines to see that.

It's only serene if it's not your own aquarium. Otherwise you see it and start thinking "Is the water too cool? I hope the nitrogen waste is breaking down... is that too much algae? *#(^$ fish stop biting that other fish! And you two... when the @*$@* will you lay some goddamn eggs already."

Oh, they won't stop at the steak. They'll eat the bones too, the plate the steak came on, and your hand too, if you're not careful. To a dog, hand = meat on stick.

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE WOOF!

Son, we live in a world that has yards, and those yards have to be guarded by dogs with fangs. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Flopsy? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Miss Fluffy, and you curse the canines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that Miss Fluffy's death, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while furry and fearsome to you, saves lives.

You don't want the woof because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me in that yard -- you need me in that yard.

We use words like "obedience," "protective," "loyal." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I lie at the foot of it.

I would rather that you just said "good boy" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up some rawhide and mark the post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think you're entitled to!

I have a feeling most of the good ones are on the older side.

Pitties are loving dogs but man are they goofy idiots when they are young and hyper, I can see lots of valuable hospital equipment getting smashed to pieces by their maniacally wagging tails.
