(AZCentral)   Three men in their mid-30s devise a plan to steal gas from a gas station's underground tank using a van with a false floor and an elaborate siphoning system. Would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddlesome gas fumes   (azcentral.com) divider line 93

Curious.

What do Americans call gas - as in gaseous gas, not petroleum 'gas'?

Like that gaseous stuff for your cooker at home. Or for heating water. Or when you fart. That kind of gas.

Gas. Or sometimes 'natural gas' when the context doesn't make it obvious. Or by it's proper name (ie., propane, methane, etc.)

Yeah, we use the word for a lot of things. In this case, we're talking gas, short for gasoline.

Arguments about "gas" or "vapor" or "jell-O" aside, this looks more like a candidate for the "dumbass" tag. If he'd had the courtesy to make a spark, we'd have "Darwin."

Gasoline and Petrol were both brand names for specific companies that became generic.
That's why.

Think petroleum jelly = Vaseline. Same naming idea.

Don't you see the huge white tank with metal straps going around it? It's got two clear hoses going up to the top and the wooden shelf appears to be attached to it as well. See it yet? It's only taking up half the van or so.

CarrieWhite: You would need to steal a good bit of petrol (gasoline) for it to at any time be even worth your time!

at $3/gal they got $600 before being caught. Had they filled their 450 gallon tank they would have gotten $1350, which 3 people in an hour or so of "work" that is not bad income. Even if they sell it at half price they are still above the curve in terms of average income ($40,100 for non-government workers, $71,000 for government workers per year).

There was a rash of people stealing diesel from semis/lorries. They would drill a hole in the tank and be done in a few minutes. One tank can be hundreds of gallons, over a thousand dollars.
