We never know the burdens others bear, even when we are close to them.

Wow, hell of a story. Great find, Subby!

It's rare to see a journalist who writes so beautifully anymore. Excellent job subby. Maybe one day we'll live in a world that is less flippant about sending so many men off to die 6,000 miles from home.

Colleen's family knew their mother had been married at age 16 to a man named Arnie Graham, and widowed less than a year later after he was killed in the Korean War in 1951

That man is a child rapist! He should have been registered in the national database of sex offenders.

That was then...this is now. Anyway, getting married to a 16 year old isn't exactly illegal in some states.

16 is legal in most states. I got married at that age, had three sons and stay married for 18 years. You have a dirty mind. Sicko.

Growing up, I saw what my Mother had to deal with an Army wife. The weeks of Dad being gone; having to take care of me while living off-base in a foreign country; and years later, the months of Dad being deployed in Bosnia, where I got emails with such lines as "Don't tell your Mother, but get me a tactical extended for my holster and send it to me ASAP. I really could've used it today."

I didn't enlist because I didn't think my wife could handle it. I love her, but she's not made of the same stuff as Mom.

2010-02-22 03:09:02 AM
The postscript is short but just as beautiful. The daughter reached out to Earl, and spoke with him and his wife for 45 mins, learning more about this man and her mothers short life with him.

2010-02-22 03:10:23 AM
Colleen doesn't know why or when Graham went to fight the war in Korea, although news clippings she found say he was called to active duty from the reserve corps Oct. 15, 1950.

That seems to answer both when and why? Is Colleen just dense?

Arnie, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life.......

From the article:
"In the face of intense enemy fire from automatic weapons and small arms, Sergeant Graham, with complete disregard for his personal safety, continually moved from one dangerous position to another without benefit of cover or concealment," the typewritten letter states. "He frequently engaged in close-in fighting with the enemy and single-handedly destroyed seven of the enemy. When the company was ordered to withdraw for consolidation of positions for the night, Sergeant Graham voluntarily remained with the rear guard and directed heavy fire on the enemy until he was mortally wounded by enemy fire."

RIP sir, and thank you

So they're going to bury her next to her first husband with whom she's spent a year's worth of marriage, instead of her future husband with whom she's spent the rest of her life, and had four children, with. Alright then.

Of course not. When she's around, I say I didn't enlist because I didn't want to put her through that...

Why not? she already bought the space, has relatives in the same cemetery, and her 2nd husband wants to be cremated and scattered. Seems like simple pragmatism to me...

Not only that, he smokes opium:

They were mundane yet fascinating to Colleen: Arnie's wallet, with receipts, stamps and money; what appears to be a brass opium pipe; a folding camera without film.

Excellent story -- good find indeed.
Sometimes the wounded soldiers come home... I can't find the horribly sad wedding picture of the burned soldier and the sad-looking bride, but this one is way better anyway (also a soldier that got married on returning home)...

Well when Barack Obama becomes President & the Democrats control the House & Senate they'll surely cut off funding to Iraq & end this stupid Bush war.

I bet Nancy Pelosi will also finally let the employees at the hotels she owns unionize instead of firing them.

I think it's sweet. And Colleen plans on putting some of her fathers ashes with her mother. What does it matter, they're all dead, or soon to be. The body is just meat, bones, muscle and electricity. It's really more honoring the persons wishes to make yourself feel better, they're dead, they don't know any different. If Colleen felt her mother would have wanted it that way, and her father had no objections, who are you to judge.

Nah, the issue here is American who doesn't understand the language his parents taught him.

A man has a picture of his wife in his breast pocket.
A Korean fires a gun.
The bullet goes through the picture and kills the man.

Well, thanks for the explanations, and insults.

I was reading it as 'picture' 'of her with hole', not 'picture of her' 'with hole'. Adding 'in it' would have helped, but I guess the headline was getting pretty long.
