Necessity breeds invention. I couldn't handle those after a month. My hat is off to those guys that endured eating those for 2 months. I bet gazelles taste pretty good grilled.

Wouldn't shooting a gazelle with an M-16 reduce it to a pile of feathers and ashes?

Damn dangerous assault rifles hit mammals so hard they knock them into a different life form and make them burn.

Only a marine would hunt with rocks and pistols when they've got rifles.

Could be that they want to preserve rifle ammunition for animals of the walking erect variety. Could also be that pistol rounds travel less distance, therefore less chance that there will any "unfortunate" incidents.

One puzzling thing though...if these were grain-fed gazelle, wouldn't they be pretty tame? I mean how much effort does it take? 1) Walk up to animal with 9mm in one hand, salt in the other 2) cap gazelle by placing barrel to back of its head while it licks salt from hand. 3) Drag carcass home for steaks.

Must take some co-ordinated effort to hunt them down with rocks. I've gotten within thowing distance of deer several times on local trails, but the chance of taking one down by yourself is iffy.

Marines shouldn't be killing indigenous animals for food.

Thats about the same as stealing their money from banks and using it to buy food.

2003-04-18 03:36:37 PM
a 5.56 round (.223) would do a fine job on a gazelle, without laying waste to the meat.

What will Jeanine Garofolo have to say about this?

Only if you shoot them with an M-16. If you kill them with rocks they're just meaty goodness. And if you have sex with one, Cola will never leave you alone.

I have a brother over there now, and he told me that he was only getting one meal a day. Wouldn't surprise me if he was doing the same thing. I checked the unit in the story and it's not his. My brother is a big redneck, and something like that would be right up his alley.

This ain't nothing, a cooler story is the Special Forces during Somalia going on safaris in their choppers, wildebeest BBQ, nyum. & given the choice over an MRE or some nice fresh gazelle BBQ, well, there is no choice.
Now we all need to make a nice BBQ sauce recipe from the contents of an MRE.

Tarvuz asks: If we are going to cover less than 100 people getting excited about a statue of Hussein could we at least have a bit more news coverage about 10k protesting the American presence?

Of course not. If it doesn't fit the story that the media and the government want to sell us, it shouldn't be broadcast. That's also why there hasn't been much talk about weapons of mass destruction. It's obviously unimportant that the government may have lied and manipulated the public. We must all focus on the new rationale: liberation. But, we mustn't focus on it to the point where anti-American demonstrations are covered in any detail.

An M-16 would be perfect for hunting Gazelles. Well, except for the feathers and ashes and stuff.

Would be the sweet life if they could eat gazelle for dinner, then eat Giselle Bundchen for desert.

Damn, I think a gazelle has more meat on it's legs than she does. (Yes, I'd still hit it anyway)

I love a good Gazelle. Here's an easy Gazelle recipe for this summer's busy entertaining schedule:

You'll need

1 Gazelle
2 stalks celery
1 large onion
3 medium carrots
1 1/2 sticks butter
1/2 cup wild chopped mushrooms
2 cloved garlic, sliced thin
2 cups nice white wine
1/4 cup semolina flour
cayane pepper/red pepper to taste

Melt butting in really big skillet. Add sliced garlic, and stir. When the garlic is soft, add onions, celery, and carrots. Stir these until the color changes, then add 1 cup of the wine. Let this come to a good boil.
In another really big pan, brown the Gazelle using a little of the Bechamel you're making in the other pan, and the other half a stick of butter on high heat. When the meat shows brown, add a little more of the sauce, and the flour, stirring vigorously. When this is all brown, add the rest of the sauce, mushrooms, and wine. Let come to another boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 30-40 minutes.
Serve over a long grain rice, or "wild rice" with a side salad of arugula and greens and a balsamic dressing.

BY the by: why is the only "right" rice white rice? Put a little color on some rice and it's got to be "WILD" rice! MMMMkay?

An MRE has about 5,000 calories. Most people don't get that many eating 3 meals a day. Ok, maybe if their meals come from McDonalds they do.

I got a kick out of their cooking method, namely taking a radiator grille off of one of their trucks. I haven't heard of anyone doing that since Land Rover stopped making the wire grilles that could also be used as chicken coops.

However, I've got to say that I'd prefer DerekSD's flamethrower suggestion. Quick and easy, with no cleanup!

Not to be a downer or anything but two of the 16 known species in the genus Gazella are thought to be extinct in the wild, and several others are listed as endangered or threatened. Gazelle populations are negatively impacted by poaching, habitat loss due to the expansion of agriculture, and competition for food with livestock.

I hope that we can atleast say that we are not killing any of the other "several others"

I am not a PETA freak and I know that you all will say that if we just leave them there they will die or that the marines need to eat (which is completely true) but how will this look to the rest of the world.......

/flame on please

Does any body have a picture of a roosting gazelle?

2003-04-18 03:48:08 PM
I'm not against hunting and eating gazelle raised just for that purpose, but there are endangered species they've been trying to breed and would the jarheads know the difference?!

2003-04-18 03:48:36 PM
After two months of MRE's you would probably eat teryaki rat. Trust me.

As far as my field experiences go, anything that crawls is food. I have dined on squirrel, rabbit, snake and other critters while in the bush. I even tasted dog in Asia (they grow them like cattle there...). As far as hunting them with stones it takes a bit of coordination but it can be done. It is quite easier however to build deadfall traps with bait than to run after your quarry, especially if you haven't eaten in some time and need to preserve energy. Corrals will work also.

It is probably wiser not to use a weapon in this circumstance. The reason is that you will draw attention to yourself and risk getting captured or killed.
