So...are there measures in place to ensure that these people don't turn around and immediately sell their BlackBerries? Can these phones be used for normal purposes, too? Who pays for the ongoing service? (Un)surprisingly little actual detail in this story.

Also, CNN, don't stretch a 4:3 video to fill a 16:9 frame. It looks terrible.

Yeah, the word 'video' only appeared twice in the link; how can they expect anyone to see that, let alone know what it means??

Hint: mouse over the link before you click if you're that worried about videos.

anybody wan't to explain this in non-video form?

I'm not a smoker and haven't watched the video, but I have to say that with the amount of money smokers spend on cigs and cig tax; they might as well get something back other than death.

Yes, it was stupid to drive under the influence, but drunk driving wasn't considered to be as serious in the 70s as it is now.

DanQuayle: at least they are spending my tax money wisely for a change,

I disagree. Besides, my Dad quit smoking back in the early 80s, without the assistance of some lame ass government program.

Besides, if more people quit smoking, how are the federal and state governments going to do with decreased revenue?

2010-02-12 06:03:18 PM
They should give them e-cigarettes. I have been using one now for three months and gradually have been reducing the nicotine levels in the cartridges. Now only am I getting my nicotine fix I am getting the mouth fill of smoking without the tar and other nasty stuff. Sure there is propylene glycol but given that I am unable to go cold turkey and other methods have not worked for me I am willing to smoke a bit of anti-freeze. The lesser of two evils I guess. Plus I mix my own so coconut-mint is now my favorite flavor.

If you payed attention they are not spending anyones tax money. They are using the money that they received from a settlement against the tobacco industry. That being said...This must be a very sloooooowww news day!

As much as taxes as smokers pay in a lifetime under the guise of providing them healthcare, which we all know they don't use because they die too early, The government could probably send them each of them a free blackberry every year and still be making money off them.

Text link (new window)

Whole story:
FTFL - It appears that Washington DC has started up a recent program set to cost $977,346 that will provide smokers with BlackBerry Smartphones (CNN - I forgive you for writing "BlackBerries" and not "BlackBerry Smartphones") in hopes of helping them quit. The plan is run by the American Legacy foundation, and the idea behind it is that smokers will have a 24/7 line to get support while trying to quit. Their BlackBerry will give them 24/7 text support, help connect with others who are trying to quit and options to help prevent relapse. We're not 100% sure if the devices will carry any special applications to aid in this process, or if they are just bare-bones devices.

The DUI one was an imageshack pic - how could you see one and not the other? The second was four pictures of four presidents smoking.

And regardless of whether a DUI was "a big deal" in the 70s, it is now, and shows his disregard for law.

No it doesn't. All it shows is that he got drunk and got behind the wheel of a car. A lot of "normal" drinkers get DUIs. People who are normally upstanding citizens can actually have their judgement clouded by alcohol consumption.

/Not a bush fan, just know a bit about people who get drunk.

Weird.

And if you're going to play the "disregard for law" card, what about Obama's past drug use?

One.Million.Dollars.

FYI - the federal government spends more than that on magnetic paper-clip dispensers.

Not that you shouldn't be outraged by waste in government, but you might want to pick your battles a little more carefully - maybe start with the $6 billion cash that went missing in Iraq.

Just remember this is a democrat's program, its only goal is to help the poor smokers out there, using an app only available on one kind of phone from one manufacture, instead of a web based version that would work with any smart phone or normal web browser is in no way shape or form a corporate hand out.

Hey if that job pays 100k a year at a 35% tax rate he would have paid it back in 27 years and only cost taxpayers another $1.7 mil in the process.
