Totally irrelevant. I was there on business last year, and basically everyone in all of farking Scandinavia speaks impeccable English (I was able to ask a group of elementary-school aged kids to take a picture of me in Stockholm, for example, without a word of Swedish).

If Norway wasn't so damn cold, it'd be awesome. There's just something about it being -16C with wind chill that puts a real damper on it for me.

I was in Geiranger, a tiny little town at the end of a fjord. While walking through the woods, I came across a group of school children about 9 or 10 years old. They spoke better English than my Polish wife, a linguist, who used to work as a Spanish-English translator (at least accent wise - she probably has a better grasp of Grammar than most native English speakers.)

Among some of the Muslim demands are division of sexes in classes, recognition of the two Muslim Eid holy days as official in Norway, no work on Fridays, and easier access to hospitals that practice circumcision. I don't have or care for the actual numbers of Muslims in Norway but that is unfortunate.

How is that unfortunate? Seems far more outrageous to encourage a foreign, backwards population to immigrate to your country and then declare there were strings attached all along. "Hey, we invited you guys to come over en masse but now you must give up your ancient culture, strong traditions and unsightly way of life."

And if they refuse they the alternative of being alienated from the naive Europeans exploiting them for any of the common reasons for European immigration (alleviating white guilt, cheap labor, fulfilling misguided sense of progressiveness etc.)

No we don`t. We have a more or less tax-free zone in Svalbard, but thats way north of the polar circle (almost half of Norway is above the polar circle).

For those who asked above, VAT is sales tax. That's actually the EU offical term for it (though I forget exactly what the full name is). Norway isn't a part of the EU, so we actually have a different term for it, but for non-Norwegian speakers we call it VAT or sales tax anyway.

The sales tax is 25% in Norway, by the way. I think it's about the same in the rest of Scandinavia as well.

It's really the sales tax that gets you. My income tax is around 35%, and that is the whole thing. You can easily move in that direction in the US as well, when you start to compound state taxes, federal, 401Ks, health insurance and so on. Cost of living is definitely higher here in Norway though. But you get much more for it in social services and goods.

For the record, I'm a dual US/Norwegian citizen who's lived about equal chunks of my adult life in either country, so I do have a pretty good basis for comparison.

Scandinavia is awesome if you're a white woman. Free education, health care, and housing for your kids. Plus (at least in the case of Denmark) $4000/year/kid TAX FREE (a big deal where the tax burden often hits 70% of your income). A tolerant society allows you to sleep and be impregnated by the men you want to father your kids without having to really worry about whether they will stick around to raise them. I remember talking to a Danish pre-school teacher who had 1 out 20 of her students living with both biological parents (and saying this was pretty typical). Denmark even passed the "Love Bridge Laws" (later repealed) to punish Danish men seeking foreign wives by making it financially impossible for them to live in Denmark.

If you're not white and female, you're mileage may vary. Don't get me wrong - they're not Alabama racist. You won't have a cross burned on your lawn or a loved one hung from a lamp post. But you can probably expect to have to comfort your small kids as they have vicious racist taunts said to them at school with the teachers refusing to do anything about it and hearing your neighbors say shocking things that wouldn't be tolerated in most other parts of the developed western world.

As for the women being hot - yeah they're definitely hotter than most of America - but that's like winning a race against a special olympics kid. They are starting to get fat, too. Eastern European women are definitely more attractive.
