This. F*cking sidewalk cyclists. It's called a sideWALK for a reason. If a cyclist wants to get uppity about "share the road", then he/she better damn well make sure he/she is following the rules of the road.

//if I'm on a sidewalk or using a crosswalk, I am off my bicycle and pushing it... you know, walking.

It would be have been easier in the long run just to flatten the cyclist.

By the way cyclists, if you want to be treated like a motor vehicle in the road, start observing stop signs and red lights....you know, like motor vehicles do.

Cyclist here. I do sometimes cycle on the sidewalks (cuz the roads aren't always safe). However, I do so at near-walking speed (if there are people around) and I always give the pedestrians the right of way.

2010-02-11 06:43:40 AM
Sounds like the cyclist should have come off the top rope and landed the elbow. That always works.

2010-02-11 06:45:07 AM
Cyclists shouldn't ride on a sidewalk, even if it's legal like here in NC. The difference in speed makes mixing the pedestrians and cyclists in the same area dangerous for both of them. Inexperienced cyclists (children) should use sidewalks, but everyone else should stay on the road where they ought to be anyway.

I'm always amused how cyclists say they have "as much right to the road" and then go on to blatantly disregard the rules that apply to them while using those roads. They truly are douchebags for the sake of being a douchebag.

The thing is, bicycles aren't motor vehicles, nor are cyclists pedestrians. What we need are separate bicycle lanes. (and motorists have to stop parking their %$$ing cars in them)

Is a crosswalk, as in the article, same as sidewalk?

Confused. I only know 'pavement'.

How much farking trouble is for city engineers to add a bike path between the road and sidewalk? And stop designing mega-suburbs with the size of a small independent country?
This is a vicious cycle, larger cities (in square miles) calls for more cars and more roads, which in turn calls for larger cities... in the end we end up with unbelievable crap like this:

You need clear regulation that is taught at school and in driving school.

Crosswalk = zebra crossing
Sidewalk = that thing you walk on that bicycles shouldn't be on.
Pavement = street (that thing cars drive on)

Some countries have them. My city is run by bungling idiots, so we sorta have them - which makes them more dangerous than not having them at all.

So why the biatching about cyclists on the sidewalk when the article is plainly about an altercation on a crosswalk?

Didn't know pavement in the US was the actual road.

IMO private cars have no place in cities at all. Taxies, buses, and so on, certainly, but not private cars. Build giant parking houses on the outskirts of the cities, replace the roads with bicycle lanes and really wide sidewalks, and get the public transportation working.

No more gridlock. Less pollution. Less noise. Healthier inhabitants. Safer streets. Fewer accidents.

Never gonna happen.

That wasn't what I meant to say - rather that when cyclists don't have their own place in the traffic (physically or legally), cyclists tend to do as they please. As things are now, everything is ad hoc WRT bicycles (depends on which country you live in - NL has figured it out from what I hear).

I do some times run red lights (no such things as stop signs where I live), but only when there are no cars around. Yes, I check first. I'm not risking my life for a few seconds. Idiots who weave their way through a red light deserve what they get.

TFA: A witness observed the two men yelling and swearing at each other. He observed the bicyclist throw his bike down and "puff up his chest as he said, 'Come on'"...

Is it just me or does it sound like this bicyclist is some granola-muncher that started crap, got his arse handed to him and then went crying to big-brother?

2010-02-11 07:35:07 AM
The pedestrians around here are worse, they'll just burst right out into a busy four-lane city street and start swearing at the drivers who come screeching to a stop to avoid hitting their dumb asses. I did almost flatten one spandex-clad cyclist who tried to pass me on the right while I was making (and properly signaling) a right turn - fortunately I noticed his neon-pink hide in the mirror at the last second, so I was able to stop before I cut him off completely. He yelled at me to watch where I was going, and though it actally pissed me off a lot more than it probably should have, I did somehow manage to refrain from busting out the karate.

That doesn't mean you're exempt from following traffic laws, especially since nearly every bike lane I've ever seen was on the road where the stop signs and traffic signals were. Plus, bike paths (which I think you're talking about) create problems of their own when they cross streets. They don't look like intersections, cyclists don't treat them as "stop or die" areas, and motorists often don't realize they are there either until it's too late.

Seems to me the driver was the bigger douche here, FWIW. While the cyclist was a bit aggressive, it was the driver who resorted to violence.

All I want is enough room on the side of the road that cars can pass bikes easily, parking cars don't obstruct the lane or create a dangerous door zone in the lane, and no one gets stressed out. Whether there's a picture of a bike painted there is not as important.

As someone else said, I don't like multi-use, completely separated bike paths as they tend to have shiatty, dangerous intersections, and also they're covered with young families, dog walkers and rollerbladers. They're for recreation, not transportation.

2010-02-11 07:43:57 AM
My city never farking plows the multimillion dollar bicycle trails in the winter. So cyclists try and peddle through 5 feet of snow or they peddle on the road, in the dark, with their little flashy vests on. Its really going to be the city's fault when one of them gets creamed.
