One of the charges against the parents is "Failure to report neglect of a minor." Does that mean if you report it, it's ok? Because it seems on par with "Failure to report theft" or something like that... wouldn't you already have a theft (neglect) charge.

6 hours of face-to-face socialization. I bet the kid would pick the bathroom imprisonment.

Yes, but they charge people with everything they can, then negotiate some of the largely redundant charges away if there's a plea deal. We've got so many laws on the books that it's easy to pile up mostly redundant charges. Sometimes I think that's kind of BS, but in this case, I say the prosecution should have at it.

On a serious note, since it was her step mom that was charged, and she's probably not the legal guardian, she was most likely charged for failure to report since it's not her kid and she probably doesn't have legal custody.

If I ahd been "punished" with two months in a bathroom at age fourteen I would have "punished" myself to the point where they would've have had to pry open the door with the jaws of life and chisel my preserved skeletal remains out of two tons of my own amber nut-resin.

So, let me get this straight, you'd get off at being locked in a bathroom?

At fourteen, I could get off on a slight breeze.

dj_bigbird: Stealin food, that's a night in the box

Them clothes got laundry numbers on them. You remember your number and always wear the ones that has your number. Any man forgets his number spends a night in the box. These here spoons you keep with you. Any man loses his spoon spends a night in the box. There's no playing grab-ass or fighting in the building. You got a grudge against another man, you fight him Saturday afternoon. Any man playing grab-ass or fighting in the building spends a night in the box. First bell's at five minutes of eight when you will get in your bunk. Last bell is at eight. Any man not in his bunk at eight spends the night in the box. There is no smoking in the prone position in bed. To smoke you must have both legs over the side of your bunk. Any man caught smoking in the prone position in bed... spends a night in the box. You get two sheets. Every Saturday, you put the clean sheet on the top... the top sheet on the bottom... and the bottom sheet you turn in to the laundry boy. Any man turns in the wrong sheet spends a night in the box. No one'll sit in the bunks with dirty pants on. Any man with dirty pants on sitting on the bunks spends a night in the box. Any man don't bring back his empty pop bottle spends a night in the box. Any man loud talking spends a night in the box. You got questions, you come to me. I'm Carr, the floor walker. I'm responsible for order in here. Any man don't keep order spends a night in...

Medical evaluation found that the girl was in the 25th percentile for weight and in the 50th percentile for height, compared to other girls her age.

So she was starved for 2-months and still in the 25th percentile for weight? She sounded fat...

If you get convicted of a crime like this can we add sterilization to the punishment? I do not think these people should be allowed to breed any more.

But people who are homeschooled definitely don't grow up to be maladjusted freaks for Jesus, right?

Can someone link to the homeschool girl thread? It sounds like required reading.

I was homeschooled until 9th grade.

Pros:
Freedom to explore. Knew HS Algebra / Trig at 10. Read Kipling, Vonnegut, Poe, Crane, Orwell at 9. Knew the rudimentary aspects of nuclear weapons (isotopes involved, construction methods) and other HS Chemistry concepts at 8.

Cons:
All of the above knowledge was ultimately useless to me at that age. Socialization was difficult, as my homeschooling was on the QT e.g. it was tough to meet new kids as they might actually attend the obscure school I was supposed to be attending at the time. Starting public school at ninth grade was a shock, especially since I had to move across the country to California to stay with relatives I'd never met in order to obscure the lack of scholastic records. I made friends with Mary Jane because getting high was fun, and because it was an easy subculture to integrate, especially in SoCo in the early 80's. Yes, I'm old.

Never had to piss in a Spackle bucket in a locked bathroom though, so there's that. Thanks, Dad!

cool story bro moment

my buddy's parents used to have this house on the outskirts of the city. He had virtually no neighbors, but suburbs had developed around the area so it was kind of an odd place. In the basement there was this little tiny closet of a room that had a bench built on the side of the wall. Outside the door there was a latch where you could pad lock it shut from the outside. Inside where tons of crayon drawings, obviously done by kids. At one point in time the previous tenants had locked kids in that little closet. Very creepy.

I don't see the problem for the kid being grounded, its not like he has any friends to hang out with.

The horror came to an end on January 24, when she escaped by crawling up a linen closet, climbing into an attic crawl space, kicking out a loose board and fleeing out the back door.
