Goodbye crab catchin' man

2010-02-09 11:49:05 PM
Aw...he was my favorite guy on the show. This sucks.

2010-02-09 11:52:38 PM
This and he was only 53 years old. Touching scene on the last episode of the season when he gave his son his "wings" (some type of necklace..think it has a crab on it)

Just really sad.

2010-02-09 11:52:56 PM
He reminded me of my Uncle Ritchie who was a charter fishing boat captain. He drank too much, smoked too much and did way too much cocaine. Died at 44 or 45. He was funny as hell, a hard worker, and a better friend you could never find.

Phil seemed like that. RIP Crab Man

Condolences to your family.

Yeah, I really liked his attitude and outlook.

Shoulda stopped smoking, though.

Ender's: Tough old bastard. Very sorry to hear this.

The sad thing is he wasn't that old. He kind of destroyed himself with his lifestyle. He could have retired years ago.

2010-02-10 12:23:11 AM
Damn. That's really too bad. While I seldom watched the show, he was the one person that really stood out because he had an "everyman" quality; he seemed like someone I could actually know.

2010-02-10 12:33:23 AM
Very sad.

Rest in peace

Aw man I always played the Cornelia Marie in the PC videogame before I realized it was the most boring game ever invented.

2010-02-10 01:35:36 AM
He lived the life he wanted to, it seemed, right up to the end, and was lucky enough to have his boys beside him at work and getting ready for his final voyage. Seemed like a man with a helluva sense of humor and real integrity. RIP Cap'n Phil.

Sun God: The sad thing is he wasn't that old. He kind of destroyed himself with his lifestyle. He could have retired years ago.

He would have been miserable. I've known a couple fishermen, and one thing they are NOT is homebodies. If he was anything like the fishermen I knew (and from everything I've seen, he was), he felt most at home on his boat and wouldn't have been happy anywhere else.

Yeah my dad was a sailor and he was really only happy when he was on his boat. When he got emphysema and had to retire to a landlubber's life it broke him more than his lungs did.

The thing is he really did retire every season to a "landlubbers" life. He lived in a nice house with a nice lifestyle. He made about $500,000 a year. His sons make about $100,000 each. And will now make more if they have a good agent. Let's get sad about a death in the family, but not too sad about the way he lived.

2010-02-10 03:15:34 AM
BTW all the captains on Deadliest Catch are like him, smoke like chimneys, don't sleep, eat like crap. Like Sig Hansen once joked about the "captain's diet" cigarettes and chocolate.

/ok there was the Bible thumper on the first season
//who behaved exactly upto stereotype at the end of the season

2010-02-10 03:32:49 AM
Bummer. Fishing in the Bering Sea isn't the easiest lifestyle, but it's something he had to enjoy doing since he'd been fishing since he was 7. The long hours, the cold, the diet, and for many (including Phil) the nicotine and caffeine. It was a rough lifestyle, but I suspect Capt Phil wouldn't have had it any other way.

May the seas be full of crab where ever you are Capt Phil.

God bless that man. He was always cool on the show, can only hope that properly reflected him in reality. Got to live what he loved doing and had the added benefit of entertaining others at the same time. A pretty good life, even if it wasn't long enough.

Irreverent, yes, but - that just reads wrong.

Oh--for some reason, I thought of the Phil Harris who did "The Thing"--but I expect he's been dead for years...

Theoretically, the crabs will be catching him. His sons will use him as bait.

It is sad. I loved watching him have a stress episode and more or less get close to having a heart attack. I didn't know he'd have a stroke, however. But, probably a given. A great day for reality TV.

Maybe this is what happens when you kill so many creatures? I don't know. Karma etc.
Anyway this is sad for his famnily, tbh I couldnt watch the show it is terrible (and I love boats/maritime fiction)

My grandfather was a fisherman, when he retired nothing changed. He'd still roll out of bed at 3 and would go down to the docks to survey what was going on. He had a dory he'd row, he still had some nets he checked. Until he died he had some mussels out and went clamming 3 or 4 times per week.

Diet on the boat was coffee, some booze and cigars. The cigars were those little italian ones that were crooked and stunk like a**. I went out with him a few times carrying a lunch...after I puked it up he laughed and told me that's why he didn't eat on the boat. Lesson learned.

Wonder who will take the helm this year. I suppose it'll be Murray, and maybe Jake will take some time at in the wheelhouse.

RIP Fisherman.

Captain Phil,
You will be missed. My condolences to his family and crew. I always enjoyed watching him and his boys and all of the crew of the Cornelia Marie. I wish I had the chance to meet him. I bet he was a LOT of fun to be around.
Enjoy the fishing Cap........

Jgsublime: So are they gonna rename "Deadliest Catch" to "See I Told You So"?

That's funny. It will be interesting to see how this is treated on the Discovery Channel. The Channel of no fear. Mike Rowe will narrate the devastating news among the remaining Alaskan fisherman. The news will be delivered solemnly. Even though some of the guys probably hated Phil.

In the meantime a fishing boat with cameras will follow the featured crab boats, and there will be one or two choppers in the sky with HD cameras. How else do you think they get those shots?

2010-02-10 07:34:50 AM
Lived it like he wanted right till the end. Gotta admire that.

Macular Degenerate:
I'll just say one thing - these guys are not exactly the pinnacle of health. Hard living with booze, cigs, long days with no sleep and exhausting work. Color me bummed but not shocked.

Pretty much what I think everyone's sentiment is.

He JUST did a radio interview with my local morning show in the last month or two. Called in from the Seattle area, or wherever he was staying, and talked about the ownership of his boat, the origins of the name, and all that kind of stuff. Was very interesting.

I'm sad to see him go, but yeah, not shocked at all. In between the lifestyle and diet, you are already begging for a heart attack or stroke. Add sitting in one place for hours and hours at a time, your chances of throwing a clot become that much worse even without all the smoking and eating like a demented goat.
