(io9) Fail Stan Lee gives new hope for an Edgar Wright-helmed Ant-Man movie. Seriously...Ant-Man? Do we really need a movie about a superhero who beats his wife?   (io9.com) divider line 53

Ant-Man?

Are they gonna get Garrett Morris to play him?

2010-02-09 11:34:46 PM
given that this is Edgar Wright, it's far more likely that he'd go with Eric O'Grady (new window)than Hank Pym

Yes.

2010-02-09 11:42:24 PM
No matter which way you do it, it's going to come off as "Honey, I Shrunk The Superhero"

Though, with Edgar Wright, it might actually be pretty good.

Well, we already had one involving a hero who was a rapist and murderer, so why not?

Came here to say this. Simon Pegg would be perfect and he'd be great comic relief in the Avengers flick.

Potentially less executive meddling, fewer people have any idea who ant man is, they can play with him a little bit more.

Ant Man? They're really digging under the barrel at this point.

There's been three Ant-Men...

Hank Pym and he's been known for:
*Getting married to Janet
*Slapping Janet
*Creating Ultron
*Creating Pym particles
*Getting replaced by a Skrull, who ironically got replaced by Hulkling during Civil War
*Creating a new team of Avengers
*Being named as Scientist Supreme by Eternity
*Dating Jocasta, an android with Janet's brainwave patterns

Scott Lang
*Father is Cassie 'Stature' of the Young Avengers' Lang
*Was a member of the Fantastic Four while Reed was presumed dead
*Dated Jessica Jones
*Died when the reanimated corpse of Jack of Harts, caused by the Scarlet Witch going nuts, exploded

Eric O'Grady
*Guy with few morals
*Joined the Initiative

For O'Grady, you're missing "Used his stolen suit to spy on women in the shower", "Spent his spare time playing Wii with international jewel thief Black Fox", and "Regularly ditches battles in favor of watching Ed on his iPod."

He'd be perfect for a Wright-directed movie.

Didn't he say a couple of years ago he wanted to do a movie where they featured all three Ant-Mans in three different eras?

Just kind of glanced at Wikipedia for him. Though I do remember during Secret Invasion, he opted not to fight and instead watched 'Chuck' on his iPod with Taskmaster, who then quoted 'You're good people' or something to that effect

I want another Blade film after Wesley makes it out of prison. Just saw the first one again. CGI hasn't aged greatly, but it was still good. Second one was great, with effects that hold up and better character interaction. The third... well, I can forgive that for the other two.

/Cool story, bro
//Still better than a goddamn Ant-Man film

The world's first Lifetime Original superhero movie.

Oh c'mon. Twice. He did it twice, with years between the two incidents. Ultimates doesn't count. We don't need to see that.

How about a movie about a man who develops something that could revolutionize the world? A specialized particle that can shrink any item down to infinitesimal size. A method for controlling insects to do heavy lifting? How about a man who in using this technology was considered an equal to Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk?
That's the ant-man movie I want to see.

Didn't his ex-wife kill Elongated Man's wife?

Oh, right, that's Atom.

Same difference.

A co-worker told me they did a reboot of Hank Pym that involved him never being a wife beater. The recent Secret Invasion had Hank replaced by a Skrull from before he hit Janet to the end of the invasion. True? Or am I being fed BS?

It depends... after you brush your teeth, what colour are the bristles?

It's gonna be hard to come up with a good way to put it all together. Doing Pym without mentioning the wife-beating thing kinda forgets the most famous feature of the character... but skipping Pym and going straight to O'Grady is also messy. But putting them together, having both included in the story, makes it too crowded a story since both of them are assholes.

Didn't he like hit her once? And feel really bad about it? Meanwhile we have villains that hit women, and we don't go around calling them out for it, because in those instances women are equals. My point is that it was a character arc not made to demonize him but to give him a real world problem, like alcoholism or drug addiction.

I think they have the benefit that pretty much no one outside the comic book reading public has even heard of Ant-Man. The only people who would notice if they left the spousal abuse out are the comic book nerds, who will have no trouble criticizing things one way or another.

evilboyevil: My point is that it was a character arc not made to demonize him but to give him a real world problem, like alcoholism or drug addiction.

IMHO his "real world problem" has always been an inferiority complex that could move mountains. He's always right on the cusp of greatness and then someone else does something cool or brilliant and his efforts go (mostly) unnoticed... the "hero" aspect of his personality doesn't let him go "full bad guy" but it does allow him to let his bastard side run free.

Sadly, yes. My parents begged me to go see it, as it would "change my life."

That's only Ultimate Ant-Man (IIRC), although an Ultimate Ant-Man movie would probably be a lot more interesting and awesome than an Ant-Man movie.

/Hell, and Ultimate ANYTHING movie would be farking awesome.

2010-02-10 04:37:36 PM
I guess normal Ant Man beats his wife too. Hmmf.

Oh well, they aren't going to include that in the movie, or they'll use a different Ant Man. Can't have any real moral ambiguity in a Marvel or DC superhero movie. Or a nonheroic main character.

/Ultimate Hank Pym isn't really a superhero, he's a superdick.

2010-02-10 04:43:54 PM
It would make a whole Hank Pym franchise possible. You could include Giant Man, Hercules, Yellowjacket, his nervous breakdown, his development of Ultron, his affiliation with the Avengers...
ENDLESS POSSIBILITES

(but a downer of a story arc)

Not if it was based on Ultimates 3
