I'd say that there is about a 0% chance that Conan was allowed to participate in an ad for Leno's competitor at this point in time. It really wasnt his choice at all.

If I were Conan, I wouldn't bother. Letterman is doing it for comedy value, but Conan had his show destroyed because Leno has no balls. And Conan is pushing his show and figuring out what to do next. Guesting next to Jay would make it look like there's no hard feelings, and that only works for Jay's benefit. Conan would be playing nice with someone who set him up for failure at every level and then giving him the okay to take back a show.

This was never going to happen. If Conan was going to take it up the ass, he wouldn't have blasted NBC and Leno for two weeks straight. This will never be okay until Conan says it's okay, and right now he's got better things to do with his time like finding more gainful employment after flushing five years of his life down the drain siding with NBC.

I don't blame Conan in the slightest.

Personally I think it was a bad move for Letterman. One, it was a Letterman ad, and two, it gives Leno damage control and puts Leno in the spotlight as equals with Letterman, which is clearly not the case right now. It would have been funnier if they had Uma Thurman or something.

Have you ever known a full blown attention whore? Because Jay Leno is an attention whore. That explains it for you.

Here's how I would have done it:

It starts off similar. Dave and Oprah sit on the couch. In addition to the bowl of chips, there are two pizzas on the sitting on the coffee table with paper plates and napkins.

Tight shot of Dave and Oprah, Dave says "This is the worst Super Bowl ever."

Camera pulls out to reveal Jay, who says "Yeah, no kidding."

They glare back and forth for a second, and the camera pulls out again to reveal Conan sitting in the chair (arranged perpendicular around the coffee table, to make glaring easier). Conan says, "Yeah."

Another round of glaring, then Conan stands up, puts on one of those little fold-able paper hats from the local pizza joint and says "Well, I gotta get back to work."

He picks up one of those warming bags that they carry pizzas in and says, "That'll be $19.95."

Optional ending:

Jay, without looking up says, "These were supposed to be here in 30 minutes or less. I'm not paying for those."

Conan's head falls, and the warming bag droops to the side, practically dragging on the ground as he slowly shuffles out of the shot.

They could even get Jimmy Kimmel to do Leno if Leno wasn't down for the bit, I think. I'm not sure if Conan would still do his part, though. So is there another way to convey the same or similar message with Letterman and O? Like could you have Jay look at a younger boy with red hair and be like "Here, have my seat.", and then the boy gets up to go to the bathroom, and comes back to find Leno sitting in his same spot again and then say "Changed my mind." Something like that if Coco didn't appear.

I thought Conan was going to be there too once they showed Jay. It's really not that big of a deal though - just television shows. Conan probably wanted to just be away from all of it, even in jest, since he quit. He'll be employed and just as popular again soon enough.
