Horseshiat.

When you heard Lakers fans complaining about hack-a-Shaq, it wasn't because the strategy was employed, it was because he couldn't hit his free throws.

There's no point in having a coin toss if the team that wins it can decide, "Screw it! We are going to take the ball to start the second half too."

Just quick and dirty Googling shows that the on-side kick works when, gasp, the team isn't expecting it.

farm4.static.flickr.com

So if it became common to open the second half that way it wouldn't work that often. Also, what's to stop the team who defers from an on-side kick to start the game? Huh?

2010-02-09 08:15:52 PM
Yeah, and you're not supposed to bunt to break up a no-hitter, either.

Sour grapes, author. Sour grapes.

I wouldn't do it in game 121 on August 14th.

But game 7 of the World Series? You bet your ass I would.

TFA: Although it was a legal play by existing NFL rules, there has always been an unwritten rule, a gentleman's rule that you do not attempt an onside kick to start a half.

Really, first I've heard of it.

TFA: At any other time on a kickoff, fine, but when you win the coin toss, you only get to receive the ball to start a half once. You don't get to break the rack in nine-ball 2 times in a row.

Nonsense. I know people say it that way a lot, but the coin flip determines who gets to decide what they want to do in each half, not who gets to kick in each half. That's why they say "Team X has deferred the option to the second half."

For example, I remember a Virginia Tech/UVA football game where UVA won the toss and deferred the option to the second half. VT then got the first half option and elected to receive, thereby giving UVA the choice of end of field to play from.

During the first half, the weather got nasty and the wind really kicked up. At the start of the second half, UVA's coach (the terrible Al Groh) decided he'd rather choose to play with the wind to his back in the 4th quarter, so they chose end of field with their deferred option. VT then elected to receive.

Long story short, Virginia Tech received the kick off at the beginning of each half.

Retard columnist is retarded.

I know, cool story bro, tl;dr

Heh. Saw a headline or comment from a Farker earlier today predicting that Bill Polian would push for this same thing. And I believe it to some degree. Sour grapes can be pretty powerful motivation

Get over it Colts fans. You lost.

If you really want to analyze it, you got your azzes handed to you. Your beloved team was outscored 31-7 after the first quarter.

I'm a Colts fan, and that was the dumbest farking article I have ever read in my entire life. Good God.

2010-02-09 09:06:31 PM
When you decide to receive in the first half, you choose to (basically) kick in the 2nd half. That's what they chose. That's what they did. If you have a problem with this, you should either a) make sure your front guys can handle a ball or b) write a whiny article after the fact.

2010-02-09 09:06:37 PM
Oh for fark's sake.

2010-02-09 09:08:51 PM
The comments are classic, particularly where TFA's writer came back in to try and clarify his stance. To summarize....

"I don't think that the onside kick should be banned except in this one particular situation when my BQFF has a chance to get the ball and does not because the nasty Saints are being doodyheads."

/Emphasis mine.

2010-02-09 09:09:19 PM
TFA is laughable and I can't believe the author is serious. If Payton didn't do everything he could to win, he'd be roundly criticized.

2010-02-09 09:15:14 PM
It was also impolite to kick three field goals from beyond 40 yards. There's an unwritten gentleman's rule to punt from that distance, and not show up the other team just cause you happen to have Kicky McStrongleg on your team.

2010-02-09 09:26:00 PM
See, these are the kind of fans that drive me nuts. The ones that think the millisecond they win anything that they're entitled to everything on the planet because their team's awesome, and didn't just spend much of the previous twenty years being miserably bad. Just accept that things happen because of how your team plays, and go with it. Sure you can biatch about them doing dumb things, and celebrate the good things, but don't act like the world farking owes you.

2010-02-09 09:27:35 PM
No Bender you-were-serious-let-me-laugh-harder pic? Disappointing.

Can you imagine this guy's response if the Saints had onside kicked to start overtime?

2010-02-09 09:40:45 PM
This was well worth reading, both for the laughable article, and the commenters justifiably ripping the author a new ass without the benefit of anaesthesia.

How many gentlemen are still coaching and playing football? I mean, can you imagine anyone calling Rex Ryan a gentleman?

Dave Wanstead's Dolphins pulled the "surprise" on-side kick against Bobby Ross's Detroit Lions in 2000. Bobby Ross resigned the following day, right in the middle of the season. I didn't see him write an article calling Wanstead a "non-gentleman".

Sour grapes make great whine.

Why all the hate for Colts fans? They're far from being sore losers about this. Hell, they're classier than most of my fellow Bears fans. Every Colts fan I know thinks that play was a ballsy move and only wish the Colts had pulled it off first.

The entire post season players were lined up between te 45 and 50 on kick offs. I'm surprised there weren't MORE onside kicks

2010-02-09 10:00:48 PM
I would have ran across the field naked with my Morning Glory swinging around like a Tic Tac, if I thought it would help the Colts lose. Especially when the Colts Organization decided not to go for the Perfect Season and by dumping games affected the playoffs race in a negative way. Maybe if the Colts are undefeated again late in the season, Peyton will get in someone's face and say he wants to go for a perfect season.

2010-02-09 10:01:53 PM
Should the NFL create a rule to disallow onside kicks to start a half?

No, and anyone who thinks so is a pussy-ass coontrag.

this article is a joke right?
the eagles tried an onside kick to start a game vs the cowboys and we returned it for a TD.
maybe your special teams just suck shiat?

The NFL's current ruleset is specifically crafted around Brady and Manning. I see no reason to believe that the NFL wouldn't outlaw interceptions in order to give those two a better chance at a title.

Who the Hell is Sean Peyton subby?

C'mon. Don't put this retarded "article" on all us Colts fans. That's almost as dumb and uncalled for as what he said. I think MOST Colts fans have accepted that the Saints deserved to win that game. There are always the exceptions that think NO was dirty and any other number of complaints, but I would say the majority have been willing to move on accepting that to some degree, the Colts got out-everythinged.

As for what the author of the article wrote...boo-farkin-hoo. The Colts had the same opportunity at the beginning of the game. They could just as easily have called an onside kick and decided not to. Legal move at the beginning of each half. Gentlemen's Rule? Last time I checked we were talking football, not golf or polo. EABOD.

"There's no point in having a coin toss if the team that wins it can decide, "Screw it! We are going to take the ball to start the second half too."

So fumbles on opening kickoffs shouldn't count?

That was completely retarded......and I can't fathom any Colts fan buys into this garbage save the author.

2010-02-09 10:14:13 PM
Please do not green light this kind of garbage. There are lots of good stories out there, like the fact that New Orleans is STILL partying. Indiana would never have thrown a party like this one still going on down here.
